39th game ....... Could it be an option ?
« on: November 17, 2010, 05:16:23 PM »
Please ...... if all you can reply with is "It's Shyte" or similar ... don't bother.

I'd like to see if we can reasonably debate this.

Why exactly is a 39th game absolutely out of the question ?

What are the cons ?
What are the pros?

Is it even logistically possible ?
To what extent could this be done?
What are the financial ramifications of a 39th game ?
Could the FA even sell a Stoke v Blackburn game to say, South Africa, or Singapore ?
Could the FA sell the TV rights for said game to Sky/ESPN/BBC, etc..... ?

Can we have a reasoned, well thought, open minded discussion about this ?

I would support a 39th game, but as a very different proposition.

I would like to see an England U-21 team set up to play in the league. The players could be loaned for the season from the clubs. The clubs would benefit as it would allow their young players to play against Premiership Opposition. The country would benefit as it would give the cream of English young players time together. It would also create a 39th game.

That game could be at the Premiership team's ground, or it could be shipped to the colonies.

Everyone wins.

A 39th game involving just Premiership teams would distort the league.

think there was a long thread about this in Gen Footy when the idea was first mooted. I think the general consensus was that it was a bad idea.

Guess I'll try and look it up then.
Sorry, I'm just one of those inattentive foreigners who would likely benefit from being able to see a Prem game without the cost of airlines/hotels/etcc... to get to England.

How would it distort the league though ? Because you'd have a 3rd fixture against only one specific team ?

Well, I'll do a search and spend the afternoon reading then.
Cheers.

The point I made would be that it COULD be grossly unfair. If the fixtures are drawn at random, Chelsea may get to play Blackpool at home, while Arsenal have to go to Spurs. Distorts competition at every level.

Even if it was 1st v 2nd, 3rd v 4th etc, I can't imagine the team in 17th would be thrilled to have to play the team below it for commercial reasons if they then got relegated as a result.

Literally the worst idea ever. Anyone who remotely supports this other than a OOTer whose hopeful to get to see his team is an idiot. I can't even believe it's been touted as a possibility, as everyone knows how monumentally fucked up it is.

Shoot me down in flames here, but....

40 games, only for the top four.

Top four could have a play off for the title. We may have a chance then. The finals could be held abroad it would be some spectacle and no doubt worth a fortune to the winner.

The 39th game already exists ... It is called ''The FA Community Shield'' ... If you want to promote English football abroad, move this game to Beijing or New York ...

The Community Shield allows the local FAs to reward the "little people" at grass roots level. The people whose hard work allows lower level football to exist. Don't fuck with that for a foreign publicity.

Its an interesting idea.

Imagine in 3 years time, 38 games played. Liverpool 89 points, 2nd Place. Scum, 90 points. 1st place.

3 points on offer for 39th game being played in some far far away country...

Hell yeah... Give me the 39th game.

Other than that - no. I don't agree. :)

If everyone played the same team for the 39th game then fair enough. But that's not going to happen, so NO.

And for that it should never happen. It's an awful idea. If it must be done then use the League Cup final.

How monumentally fucked up is it ??

So you may have to face a good club, or you may get an easy game ... shit happens ... sucks to be you if one game costs you relegation.

Why not have it as the first game of the season ... then if you lose, you still have 38 to dig yourself out of that monumental 3 point loss ??? If it's the first game of the season, you could even pad in some travel time so everyone can recover from that 4 - 10 hour flight as opposed to the however many hours of clubbing/drinking after their game that so many do now.

And, if it means you get to generate a million euros of extra revenue in overseas sales of kit/souveniers/TV/whatever, maybe it's the difference to signing the next Torres, or seeing him go to Barca.

Quite frankly, other than parity of schedule .... I've yet to see a real downside to the notion of a 39th game that cannot be at least compromised, and even the parity of schedule, over the course of 10 years would even out.
