Star Wars the Old Republic
« on: September 30, 2010, 02:47:13 PM »
Ok so it's an MMO, that means you'll be playing along with literally thousands of other people from all over the planet.

But this is an MMORPG with a massive difference.  It's Biowares first foray into MMO's and they've torn up the rule book and done their own thing.  This will be a story driven MMO.  You will choose a class, Jedi, Sith, Bounty Hunter, Commando, Spy, Smuggler etc.  Then you will have a full story based on that profession and on your playing style.  When you've finished the game you start an new proffession and it's a totally different story and different game.

This is Mass Effect gone wild.  Same type of system where you interact with the NPC's and you determine the way the story goes.  Written by some very well know writers including Drew Karpyshyn who wrote the best selling Darth Bane Novels and penned the Mass Effect series.

Lovers of KOTOR will be pleased to know that this game is not only KOTOR III it's III, IV , V, VI and VII according to the devs, they say that this game has the accumulated story writing of 3 times every game that Biowarware has ever produced.  That is massive.

Have a look at the trailers they are epic in every sense of the word.

Above is the Deceived trailer.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/z0RuR3FREFw?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/z0RuR3FREFw?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

This is the latest one although still a few months old.

The game is due out after Christmas March / April time.  Make no mistake that this is going to be one of the biggest gaming events ever.

Check out it's development at http://www.swtor.com

I shall be losing much of my life to this.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

I shall be losing much of my life to this.

I can see me doing the same.

They just recently announced space combat, which is a whole new facet of the game and one I wasn't expecting.  I can't wait to get into this game, I just hope that the PvP aspect of it is engaging and set up to be large scale war and not 5 v 5 or 10v 10.  Some of the battles we used to have on SWG were awesome.  Hundreds of players all fighting over bases.  That was before they ruined the game by bringing out the NGE.

Just bear in mind that we're talking pre beta graphics here, the game just went Beta (1) in the states.  This is very early graphics and content.

When does the 360 version come out?

This has been very widely discussed and the devs haven't definatively said if it will or won't come out on 360.

The first full scale MMO to hit consoles will do in November which will be the DC Online MMO.  That's going to be a bench test of whether a console can handle the advanced interface of MMO style gameplay or if it's going to be laggy and difficult to interact with.  Bad news for us Microsoft Jockey's is that Sony have dibs on the DC Online franchise so we may not get to play it on our Consoles after all.

SWTOR though I think it's going to be too much information for a Console to handle without having to change discs every time you change planet.  I could be wrong though.

Whenever i watch combat in an MMO game I'm reminded of that scene from Naked Gun 2 where they are having a shootout stood two feet away from each other.

If you've not seen any of these video's and you love Expanded Universe lore then check them out.

They're supposed to be Voice recordings by Jedi Master Gnost-Dural, and are voiced by the Actor Lance Henriksen who played Bishop in Alien.

I love these.

A soon to be ex-EA employee has been spilling the beans on on some of their new titles and Star Wars comes in for some stick

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104345-Alleged-Insider-Airs-EAs-Dirty-Laundry

The bit relating to Star wars is below

There are plenty of other accusations of incompetence and cronyism but my favorite spitball is reserved for the famed RPG studio that was once seen as being above such things. "Bioware? Don't make me laugh. They've spent more money making The Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. Shit you not. More than $ 300 million! Can you believe that?" he wrote.

"And you know what they're most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20 gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That's the best they have. The rest of the game is a joke," he continued. "EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they're panicking, and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can't keep pushing back launch. Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA. Probably at the level of the Sims Online."

If they bring along an expansion pack 18 months down the line the game will probably turn a profit within like 3 years anyway, look how long WoW has been going. Fella is talking out of his bum, MMOs have a much longer lifespan than the average game.

I hadn't seen this but there's no doubt, that is one disgruntled employee.  EA only bought out Bioware last year or something like that and the EA involvement has worried Bioware fans a great deal due to their slap dash coding and "just get it out there" attitude to game production.

I can't see where this game can fail.  It has cover interaction for gunners, massive story lines, Jedi / Sith game play, Space combat, PvP, Voiced NPC's instead of the all too familiar voice bubble efforts.  The graphics are still early but look good, the game play video's I've seen look the business needing various skill sets to complete missions.  They have a set of standard moves in combat which if you hit enough of them and build up your special ability bar you get an Uber move which can knock the shite out of your opponent, they're all really cool moves too.

I think this guy is just a bit of a crank.  The only thing I'll agree with him on is the moving of the release date as I've been following this game for about 18 months now and they kept putting it back, however they've released a lot of information about the game and they've listened to us gamers too about making changes to the graphics and such.  The only thing they'll be shitting themselves about is how hyped this game has been, the press and gamers everywhere love the concept, love the videos and the back ground information that is  coming out about it and they must be quietly crapping themselves that they won't meet everyone's expectations.

Keeping an eye out for Rift: Planes of Telara aswell, whichever of these comes first will probably be the one I invest the most in.

:(

That has watered down my anticipation of the game.

There are a lot of tie ins to that story line though.  You will discover what happened to Revan after he went off to the far reaches.  I believe that HK-47 will definitely appear in a few story lines of this game and have valuable information about historical events.  I think we may also discover the Ebon Hawk too.

Best of all though is that they have re-jigged the history to have Revan and Malak as the Dark Lord of the Sith and his apprentice but have both of them serving an Emperor who has ruled the Sith for 400 years or so.  No one knows who he is and although people are making guesses at it being Naga Sadow or Exar Kun or other such people they've all been discounted so far.

There will be historical tie ins and a lot of familiarity, Taris is one of the planets that has been confirmed, it is rife with mutated Rakgoul now, and there are survivors after Malak destroyed the planet trying to catch Bastilla. There will also be a lot to do with the Mandalorians, as they have a new leader and are becoming a force to be reckoned with again in this time line.

Believe me there is going to be a lot of continuation from KOTOR and much to look forward to.

Looks pretty average

This is pre-Beta gameplay and Graphics, you have to lower expectations and judge it on it's final look and gameplay when it's released.  Lots more work to be done on this game yet.

A bit sad that this is going the way of MMO. Hoping it doesn't get as in depth as WoW is, as I really want to play this game, but don't have the time to invest in a WoW-style game anymore.

Hope that it ends up more of KOTOR 1/2 but online versus WoW-style raiding being the focus.
