If memory serves me right, more a Lampard type player than an all out defensive midfielder? Moves the ball around, makes it into the box from time to time and gets a few more goals than say a Mascherano would? Not sure.

You kinda get what Hodgson wants from this signing. He's not an out and out destroyer, more like an Essien-lite or Gerrard-lite. At Fulham he played Murphy and Etuhu, neither were pure attackers or destroyers, but box to box midfielders who'd do their bit all over the pitch.

It'll be something similar with Meireles and Gerrard. Box to box, physical players, who'll run all day round. I really like the look of this partnership, think they'll suit each other to the hilt.

I first remember him from Euro 2008, when he finished off Turkey in the group matches with a nicely worked goal by Portugal

Good signing; he's always making very smart off the ball movements that create space for attacks and he is decent when it comes to defense.

All that said I remain to be convinced that re-investing only 62% of the Masch money can be seen as a good thing. The tumours are still very much in credit at the bank this summer so I for one cannot celebrate.

Looks a good player, good to see that there is at least a semblance of common sense in terms of covering for outgoing players. Will be interesting to see how he fits in with our current midfield. Hopefully we can get the best out of him in tandem with them.

coincidentally, i was just telling my mate recently that it always seems tedious for us to sign anyone. It would be covered in the press for days and weeks, whereas in most other bigger clubs, it just happens.

This signing for one pleases me in some ways. It happened out of the blue, and a really good one.
He is a really tight player, box to box as well. Could turn out to be our version of fat lampard, with deflective goals and all.

No disrespect but Lampard has more or less been the best player in the PL for the past 5 seasons.
It is very unrealistic and even unfair to expect Meireles to be that good.
