We should have hired a truly technical coach. Roy is good for the media but beyond that I don't see it
I've been surprised by the amount of fans happy (initially) with that team selection. We needed to play football but it looked like a team there to fight.
When the fight isn't there well there isn't a plan b to compensate. Where was aquilani Roy?

This. For me. This. Roy is media friendly, coach light. Benitez was media unfriendly, coach heavy. I kept hearing 'why not let them off the leash' as if you can trust the players to individually devise a gameplan and formation. Benitez gave them direction and ideas. Roy seems an anachronism, a throwback to another era, completely out of his time. Who plays 442 these days, particularly away from home? No one, not even the greenest, newly promoted championship side. Before the game I said this

"In my opinion this will be a very ugly night for us. Gerrard is very hit and miss as a CM and Lucas has started the season in poor form and not match fit. Jova is still finding his feet, which leaves Kuyt to try and hold a midfield 4 together. The problem is Kuyt is not a winger, he was played as part of a front 3, not a wide man as the media saw it. This means our midfield will be utterly pummeled by all the strong tackling and running Man City CMs. They might lack creativity, but if they possess the ball all game they will wear down the Liverpool back four. IMO, this will be a torrid performance by Liverpool, long balls aimed at Ngog, championship style, while the Liverpool midfield disintegrates. There is no player to properly link forwards and backs and only one proper winger in Jova, Honestly, I think this is an awful formation for an away game and owes far more to a dearth of central midfield options than it does to an inspired, attacking line-up. I believe we will beat 2 or 3 - 0 here."

Prescient? Hardly, it was clear from the off that this was the wrong team selection for this game. Here's a thought. Spurs tore these a new ring piece and it took an inspired game from Hart to keep them in it. How far are we behind Spurs then?

Here's another point. How many of you believe Rafa would have allowed such a poor performance with access to the same personnel? For one thing he would have played 433. He wouldn't have been shown up to be tactically naive.  I doubt Aquilani would be in Italy and if he was then Maxi and Aurelio would have been on the pitch tonight. Someone said that Chelsea in 05 was the last time he saw us get raped like that and I thought that too... but at least we showed fire that night. Tonight... insipid.

It greatly annoys me that now nice guy Hodge is in situ the media have suddenly awoken to the fact that the travails of the team and club are not necessarily down to the manager. If only they had extended Rafa the same courtesy last year he might still be at the club, holding things together, rather than in Italy managing the finest club side in Europe.
Beatings will continue until morale improves...

Shockingly poor performance, utter lack of application and effort, abysmal, naive tactics . No point singling out anyone since they were all dreadful. Why have we re-signed Aurelio if we aren't going to play him? Agger at LB? Just so much wrong at the moment its hard to know where to begin.

Our tactics were dire in the Arsenal game and again tonight.  Not at all impressive so far. Early days for the Manager but if we keep this up we will be battling for 10th.

We look like Aston Villa atm.

We were so out of our depth that it was embarrasing. Clueless, tactically naive and frankly a bit apalling.

I hope the fine people who wanted Rafa out are happy.

We played like your first sentence under Rafa last season at times.
Maybe you should change the second sentence to 'I hope the fine people who are oblivious to what the owners are doing to this club are happy'??

Just a thought.

Did you watch last season? We got twatted then as well.

If you're referring to the 2-2, it could have been 3-0 then also, except we weren't tactically inept back then. When SWP started pissing all over Insua, Rafa took the pedestrian Benayoun off (even though he had come on for (surprise) an injury and scored, and put Aurelio on to howls of dismay from the blind.

Manchester City didn't have another chance at goal, and we created 2 clear chances to win it. Still managed to get away with a point.

I'm a bit worried that Roy says he doesn't know the players. How can he not know the players? Doesn't he watch football? How the fuck does he ever sign anyone? Has he not got a television? Isn't he paid quite a lot of money to know the players in the Premier League in general and not just at Fulham?

But of course he knows the players. Didn't he decide to ship out Aquilani and Insua and now Kuyt?

That was fucking hard to watch. To be entirely honest though i am past giving a fuck on the football side of things. The first goal i was gutted , after that i was just numb , i don't know what to think anymore , i'm losing the heart for it.

The performance was awful , even if City were impressive , 442 was a good idea and fairly bold for a new managers first away game , but it just didn't work for us , Johnson looks like he is being contained , he very rarely got beyond Kuyt tonight which is the main point of him being a 17 million pound player.

Agger , well....... where to start , first things first you have to say Johnson was excellent tonight , can't believe City managed to get him for 5 million , the only consolation is the fact Whisky nose didn't sign him. I think he will be like what Giggs was for United , no matter how many players they bring in he will be the main stay in that City team for a number of years. Johnson just showed everyone why Agger isn't a full back , he is our best centre half and it should be him plus one ( Skrtel ).

Carragher , was just a normal Carragher performance , sit deep and fight for every ball without much real thought and ability , when we took centre and passed it back i remember Carra parking himself on the edge of our 18 yard box , it's like that's the default for us whenever we play , he needs to be phased out.

Skrtel , the lad was poor tonight , but i will give him the benefit of the doubt and say it was more the circumstances that he found himself in. You can't really do your best work when you are playing with someone that wants you to sit so deep , also the fact he had to play on the left side and had to bale Agger out on a few occasions.

Lucas , very poor from him tonight , over run by City's extra midfield player , and the fact their wingers were cutting inside the whole match.

Gerrard , thought he was ok , tried to find a Torres run that wasn't always there , showed some energy in a lethargic performance.

Jovanovic , worst player on the park in my opinion , was always caught as to whether to back track or attack Richards , in the end he did nothing , also gave the ball away on too many occasions and showed a poor awareness of what was around him.

Kuyt , did some good work but he has become a slave to his own reputation , used for the wrong reasons to often.

Ngog , He is goona be a good player , showed more maturity than alot of players with more expierience than himself , held the ball well and his distribution was quite useful , he just got crowded out to often.

Torres , wanted to do to much by himself but was still our biggest threat by quite a distance , pulled us up the field ten or 15 yards when we were under the cosh just down to pure ability.

In conclusion , shite. Oh and fuck off out of our clubs you Yank bastards.
You change all the lead, sleeping in my head, as the day grows dim, I hear you sing a golden hymn.

Badly missed Gerrard in his more advanced role IMO, as soon as Babel came on Gerrard slipped him through exactly how he should have been doing to Torres.

Wrong tactics tonight by Roy but he's got the experience to steady us.

some people really need to let this "Rafa" thing go, the man is gone whether you like it or not, can we just talk about something else, it's getting a bit tiring hearing "but Rafa this, but Rafa that".....

and i don't get the Hodgson bashing either.....it's not like we were a top 4 team last season and he's made us shit... we finished 7th where we deserved to finish and if you are expecting Hodgson to turn water into wine over night, then you might as well go play fifa because that's the only place you can get instant success.

This isn't Championship Manager, the ability to coach and get on with the media are not mutually exclusive. Didn't Man Utd play 4-4-2 at Fulham yesterday?

No we didn't.Never lost a big match like that.Whatever about Rafa,he al least tried to give the team shape, and never tried to play Kuyt as an out and out winger, nor play two striker who never ever play with a striking partner. He never player Martin on the left side of Cb either.

We lacked confidence and fittness last season.and the odd time Rafa did something stupid tacticly. But we never got raped by a slightly above average team like that.
Why are you looking past this season?

We can't play 2 forwards when one of them is not fit ! :butt

So 4-4-2 was not an option tonight but Roy still did not think so.
Jova and Kuyt are more strikers than midfielders , you can't ask of them to defend like Masch , Poulsen or Lucas `!
We should play 4-3-3  or 4-3-2-1
Kuyt And Jova behind one striker , droping deep when in defence.
Behind them 3 strong midfielders !
Babbel and J Cole can also fit into that formation behind striker !

Dani Pacheco got a new squad number. He's going nowhere.....
Let us never forget Rafael Benitez and what he did for us. A fighter full of guts and passion. A gentleman full of class and dignity. A football manager full of intelligence and pure genius. A Legend.
Adios Rafa, buena suerte.

Your task is a simple one Brendan: make us dream again!

and from the Manchester City team only tevez is undeniably world class and yaya supposedly one of the best in his position

the rest are over priced good players

Yeah but two world class players and 9 very good players are better than two world class players, one world class player scythed by injury, a couple of good players and then a bunch of average players.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

fuck all to do with that but the way he played in the arsenal and trab.. game

I know, dont think he is a wideman in four man midfield. That was more the issue tonight.
