Saw this on the news yesterday, haven't been online since. So apologies if all of this has been discussed within the first pages of this thread.

Very good singing, and makes me more excited than Joe Cole. Mainly because it means that a) the club hasn't completely abandoned its youth policy, which i feared for after selling Insua. Also because we have now succesfully signed three of the biggest young talents in Britain, which clearly shows or training set-up does stand out from other clubs. All vital if we want to keep existing as a club, because we haven't got the money to buy or way out of any problems.

Interesting stuff that, cheers. See Smalling for an indication of Hodgson's  record with lanky prodigious defensive nippers of this ilk.

Selling them to United? :o ;)

Reckon most of our transfers were actually started quite a while back - Jovanovic's was sorted, Benayoun's probably too (he handed in a transfer request a week before Rafa was sacked). We've been after Wilson for while as well. The only quick ones were Insua and Cole - but there might well have been lots of contact with Cole earlier as well.

So, in terms of this deal: what's the deal? We've agreed "in principle". Is that the same as Joe Cole signing and then needing a medical? Or do we need to pay them?

And importantly, could it fall through?

I really hope we can get Sami in a coaching role. The youngsters would really benefit from his experience and knowledge. Understatement, I know.

Didi would be great as well.

Very good player according to my hardcore Rangers supporting chum. However, tends to be arrogant and a little full of himself which he'll need to cut out if he has any chance of being a Kop legend!

It will be negative. Or, it will be positive if including contract renewals and signing fees, as we apparently now do.

For the moment and for this thread, it doesn't matter. It's a positive signing. Whether Hodgson is given £100m or £50 to spend, how he spends it matters. This is a good signing.

I've said for a while we would never, ever win the league without a Scottish player.

Maybe we'll win #19 this year!!

Delighted the club keep purchasing young british talent, it can only be a good thing for the club looking at the future 5-10 years down the line!

Wait to see what the net spend is....

Currently somewhere in the region of £25 million in profit (with potential add-ons on top of that) with the wage bill fairly heftily reduced (several million but unclear exactly how much and, of course, like the ticket price rises this will show up the following year) for the financial year 09/10 which ends in 10 days time. Club may end up slightly in profit overall as a result of covering the debt payments in this way.

But, this is a signing to be welcomed. We're fortunate that Rangers are in even worse financial problems than ourselves to pick the lad up at a price which makes it almost a no-brainer.

Yep. Got no problem with us buying young players. Not sure about buying 28+ year olds. But young lads that can be molded is a good thing.

And we made those signings with Kenny as the godfather to the youth academy. His appointment gives us presence and magic in that department, how he must sell us to young talent and their parents and advisors, what a result.

Well, if he's a left-footer then he'll need to wait for the Danish Alan Hansen to retire before becoming the next-next Alan Hansen.

I have been wrecking my head trying to think who he means, Celtics defence was pretty awful last season, if he means O'Dea and is rating him better than Wilson then i would have to question his judgement on players, O'Dea couldn't hack it at Reading and has done nothing of note in the SPL, surely he can't mean O'Dea

He might mean Mulgrew.

For some reason I always pronounce his name as if it has 3 syllables. Could be quite apt by the sounds of it.

Two very good points but, whilst I hate to be negative, I can't help feeling all of this activity has something to do with the club banking on £20M+ from Mascherano's sale which would make the team weaker in my eyes.  Like I say, I hate to be negative but past experience has proven that with this lot in charge us fans don't get good news without a shed load of bad.  I'd love to be wrong.
