Interesting to see Jonjo Shelvey on the list as he has been picked to play for the England under 19s in France.

Chris Mavinga might also be put out as he is in the French squad but isn't mentioned like Pacheco

Where have you seen the squad's?  Uefa.com doesn't seem to have them.  Wikipedia has three squads (Spain with Pacheco, France with Mavinga, and England without Shelvey), but no info on where the info is from.
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

UEFA.com does have the squads. Click on the team name and it brings up a series of tabs including the squad. Shelvey is showing in the England squad there.

Yeah but it doesnt mean he has been picked in the final 23 players.

Doubt he has hence the reason he is with us.

I'd love to see Spearing given a real opportunity under Hodgson. He's got a bit about him, even if he lacks a physical presence.

Don't think the squad looks too bad meself, add the world cup players to it and think it looks pretty strong. Provided we keep a hold of the majority of them that is!

It will be interesting to see how Riera gets on with the new manager

I fully expect him to be in the starting 11 against Arsenal.

Looking forward to Jonjo Shelvey, hopefully he could be revelation and follow the footsteps of Carra and Stevie.

I fully expect him to get a frosty reception from our fans.

Riera should be sold, after what he said last year, he's attutude has sucked, hitting Pacheco wtf?

He should be one of the 1st players to be sold in my opinion, we can get decent money for him and get a better replacement as well.

I understand why Hodgson wants to have a look at Riera. he knows he's got no money, so if he can possibly get:

a. him to turn himself around; or
b. him in another shop window to flog him

..then fair enough. Personally I think Riera's been a total cock and would ideally have him sold, but desperate times....

Riera evidently could not deal with the insane situation last season. Prior to his radio outburst people here wanted him to play and were questioning the fact he had been dropped.

The man should be forgiven by the fans.

Ah my bad. Foolishly thought that UEFA would publish the squads for their own competition. Just checked on FA site and he is not in the final squad. So the only confusion is mine !

Looking forward to having a closer look at plenty of the names in that squad, most notably: Lauri Dalla Valle, Tom Ince & Jonjo Shelvey. Nice to see Martin Kelly back from his injury also, remember being really impressed with the lad on his debut against Lyon last season.

This training camp is a big chance to impress the manager. Given the resources we have to us available at this moment in time, a good showing from the young lads in these friendlies could potentially open doors to the first team set-up next season.

There is little to gain by slashing our ties with one of our better players.

The man wanted to get into the Spain squad.. as a result of him not playing first team football, he has lost the chance of winning the world cup. The Grail. That was what he was afraid of and what his outburst was about. He was dropped by Benitez; at a time when there was nothing left to play for with Liverpool.

I personally understand the man's situation. I don't resent him for it. Grudges are a weak characteristic in a man.

There was plenty of things to play for when he left us in the shit. Besides, that's irrelevant. He basically gave a 2 finger salute to the club and the fans with his behaviour.

By close examination of your contributions in this thread, and the various Insua threads in the transfer forum, I have unfortunately come to the conclusion that your opinion on footballing matters is less important to me than that of my mother. And she's watched about 3 football matches in her life.

Considering Riera's current "relationship" with the fans, I can't imagine the wisdom in keeping him... We don't need a Balotelli on our team...

Whatever you think of the player's ability, his relationship to the club has been damaged to the extent that I can't see him being an effective part of the team...

He has to be sold

Riera can fuck off.

This. In abundance.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.
