Wouldn't have given him number 10. Just makes it too easy to comapre him to Voronin, and 10 should be reserved for a star player/class act.
It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here/ and i'm most obliged to you for making it clear/ that i'm not here

Roy Hodgson today revealed his delight at Milan Jovanovic's Anfield arrival - and admitted he was tracking the Serbian striker while manager at Fulham.[/u]

Hodgson officially welcomed the 29-year old striker to the Reds' squad this morning, where Jovanovic met his new teammates for the first time and took part in a full training session.

Having only arrived back from his post-World Cup break last night Jovanovic is unlikely to figure in Saturday's first friendly against Al-Hilal, but Hodgson is confident the man who scored the winner for his country against Germany in South Africa will make a big impact at the club over the coming season.

"I'm very pleased we have got Milan," said Hodgson. "He looks a very keen and enthusiastic player and it's good to have players who are desperate to play for the club.

"I was not responsible for signing him but I was pleased to hear the club had taken the initiative to get a player like him. I've seen him a lot during my time at Fulham and we were watching him.

"He's a natural wide player who can play through the middle. He's more of an attacking winger than a wide midfielder and he's a goalscorer.
He scores goals for club and country and I'm sure we'll get a lot of use out of him.

"He scored in the World Cup, he's done well with Standard Liege at Champions League level, so he's no stranger to the big games.

"He only joined us last night, so I don't think we'll use him at the weekend. He looks fit, but at this stage I think I'd prefer to use the players we have been working with all through pre-season."

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Good to know that Roy was watching him, means he'll know more about how he plays instead of him wondering who the fuck he is.

Jova: Deal never in doubt

It was the former Reds boss who secured Jovanovic's signing on a free transfer from Standard Liege during the summer, but even when Benitez left Anfield Jovanovic knew exactly where he wanted his footballing future to lie.

"I chose to sign for Liverpool Football Club, and that is it. It's very simple," he told Liverpoolfc.tv in an exclusive interview in Switzerland earlier today.

"Liverpool was always my biggest wish and to be here is a great day in my career and in my life. I knew they were following my games for Standard Liege and also the Belgian national side and when they first made contact with me I was very happy. Liverpool was my only choice and I'm pleased the negotiations were successful. Now I want to do as well as I can for the club over the next three years.

"When you speak about Liverpool you are speaking about one of the biggest clubs in the world - maybe for me, the biggest. You are talking about an historical club which has won the Champions League five times."

Having arrived at the Reds' training resort of Bad Ragaz in Switzerland last night, Jovanovic met his new manager - and new teammates - for the first time this morning.

He joined in a full training session, although spent the early part of it working through an individual fitness programme with one of the club's medical staff.

Despite now returning to training after the World Cup with Serbia - during which he netted a famous winner against Germany - he won't be considered for his first-team debut when the Reds take on Al-Hilal at the weekend.

But the 29-year old admits he has already cast his mind forward to the start of the new league season - and the chance to make his debut at Anfield alongside the array of talented players at the club.

"I can't wait to play at Anfield and hear 'You'll Never Walk Alone' - the best song in the world," he said.

"I also can't wait to play with players like Torres, Gerrard, Kuyt, Mascherano and Reina - some of the best players in the world.

"It's hard for me to tell the fans what I can bring to the team, I'd prefer to leave that talking to someone else. But I know I need to be good on the pitch and show my quality when I get the chance.

"Mr Hodgson welcomed me to the club this morning and I'm looking forward to working with him, with all the players and hopefully being successful together and winning trophies."

And how does he feel about being allocated the famous number 10 shirt at Anfield?

"Toshack, Barnes...I know the players who have worn the shirt," he replied. "But the number isn't special. It's what I do on the pitch that matters."

Non-existant really. Played on the left, struggled to get into the game and was subbed at half-time.

Some quotes from Milan in the echo:

Quote
http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool-fc-news/2010/07/26/liverpool-fc-will-up-our-game-in-the-europa-league-insists-milan-jovanovic-100252-26929987/

“I am disappointed we lost the game and it could have been better,” said Jovanovic. “They only scored after our mistake. Also it would have been better if we had scored first for confidence

“It’s not easy to play your first game after the World Cup. But it’s okay because I always try to do my best and I give everything in training sessions. But I know we will be ready to play in Europe. I am really looking forward to it. For all players all over the world, you have to be proud when Liverpool come for you.”

“I have got to use every minute and every small chance and every game for Liverpool to show I deserve to be here,” said Jovanovic, whose squad number is now 14.

“My family will be here soon, which is good. I have a wife and two boys. Lazar is the oldest and he is three-and-a-half, Dusan is his younger brother and he is two-and-a-half. We have got to choose a house but it will really help when I see them. Saying that, everybody has been really kind with me so far and make me feel very welcome.

“There is a good atmosphere and a good feeling at the club. I am really grateful to everyone for helping me feel so welcome. The coach, the players, everybody has been brilliant.

“When I get more practice and I am fitter, I am confident that I can help that team. I have never doubted my ability. But the main thing at the minute is for me to get the feeling of the team.

“Switching shirts didn’t bother me. Number 14 is my favourite and I wear it for the national team. I feel good that I have got the same number here and I hope it will bring me much success.”

More quotes from Milan about playing on the left wing:

"It doesn't matter which position I play," Jovanovic said. "That is a question for the coach. Of course, I have my own opinion but it won't be a problem if I have to play on the left wing again.

"Maybe with a bit of time and when I know all the small things about playing in that position, then it will help me. The main thing at the minute is for me to get the feeling of the team. It's not going to be easy because everything is new and we don't have much time."

From the short clips I saw of him, he seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

He explained how he couldnt speak English and therefore couldnt explain in full his delight in signing for Liverpool but you could tell from his face. Hell to him giving the journalists a hug, I wanted to give him a hug!

Some quality quotes from Jovanovic here

He's even having a pop at the bitters.....

Have you played at Anfield before?

Yes for Standard Liege in 2008. It was a hard game and I came on as a substitute. The best memory I have in Liverpool is when we beat Everton at Goodison Park. I scored and we beat them 2-1 so I have very happy memories of that.

I really hope this guy is the real deal. Its been a long time since we have had a dribbler of high quality. I dont know if Jovanovic qualifies but we need one, just because the last real dribbler (one who can go on amazing runs) was Barnes, and that is far too long a time.
Manu have had Giggs, Ronaldo. Barca have had many...Messi currently.
Arsenal have had Henry,Pires, Overmars.
I can't recall someone of high quality or atleast someone who has shown glimpses with some real quality runs, Torres excluded.

yea, and because he has a pace he wont be a riera, he will actually remain useful after 6 months.

Everyone figured out riera after 1/2 season and because he was slow he was never able to make that impact again. With jova i think we will be fine.
