Ferguson only tries to be "friends" with managers he doesn't deem to a threat. He was fine with Rafa until Rafa started beating him in the league and pushed him all the way. I remember him being very complimentary about Wenger recently. That's because Arsenal haven't won a trophy since 2005. Him and Wenger had plenty of verbal spats when Arsenal were winning/challenging the title every year.
Ferguson's typical ring of pals include the likes of Redknapp, Allardyce, Moyes, Bruce, etc. None of these managers are threats to him. He was so complimentary about Fulham's run last year because Fulham and Hodgson are not a massive threat to the title.
The jury is obviously out on Hodgson. If Roy somehow, defying all odds, manages to pressure Man United in the league, it won't be Roy breaking off the friendship. Ferguson will get into spats with him, no doubt. If we're languishing in 8th place, guaranteed, Ferguson will "extend a hand of sympathy" for Roy Hodgson, complimenting him and our club endlessly while laughing at our predicament.
