Richard Desmond 'wants to buy the S*n newspaper'
« on: June 4, 2010, 10:15:08 AM »
Quick question - if the S*n was no longer linked with the 'old regime' would this change people's attitudes towards the rag.

I personally think too much has gone on over the last 21 years and attitudes are too entrenched for a change of ownership to have any effect, but I'm genuinely interested in what others think about the subject.

The owner of the Daily Express and Daily Star has indicated that he wants to buy the S*n newspaper.
Richard Desmond told the BBC he had £1bn to spend and that he was keen to add to his stable of titles which includes the celebrity magazine OK!
He said he would run the S*n, which is Britain's biggest-selling newspaper, in a manner that was "more efficient in today's market place".
There is no indication that owner Rupert Murdoch wants to sell the S*n.
Mr Desmond told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he believed he could do a better job if he were the S*n's owner.
"We would run it in a different manner which would be more efficient in today's market place," he said.
The newspaper industry is widely considered to be in long term decline.
However, Mr Desmond has proven that it is possible to sell more papers and he believes his Daily Star will soon overtake the Daily Mirror in terms of readers.
The newspaper proprietor left school in north London at 14 with few academic qualifications before applying for a job as a cloakroom attendant at Thomson Newspapers where he met the classified-advertisement director, who he went to work for instead.
By the age of 21 he owned his own house and two record shops.
Mr Desmond acquired the Express titles in 2000 with money he had made in the adult industry.
The acquisition caused controversy after it emerged that he donated £100,000 to the Labour Party soon after the then government had approved the takeover deal.
The BBC's Nick Cosgrove said: "Richard Desmond is one of the most controversial newspaper barons Britain has ever produced and that's a field that includes figures like Robert Maxwell.
"He's known to many as Dirty Des because of a long involvement in the adult entertainment industry but it's difficult to argue with the circulation figures of the Daily Star which have more than doubled since he became owner."

No, because it wiould still be a load of shite.
What I love about this, and several other of Kenny's press conferences, is that he manages to say something to the effect of  'Shut the fuck up, you fucking helmets and don't fuck with me or my football club or I'll make you eat your own balls', without actually using th

not asking whether people would buy it - I concur, it would still be a load of shite. Just interested whether people's attitudes towards it vis a vis Hillsborough would be any different - i.e. would people still campaign against the paper, etc.. As I said, my guess is that there wouldn't be much if any change in attitude, but I'm interested in other views.

With a regime change and a full and frank apology, I could see it becoming a paper that people just did not buy as opposed to actively boycotted. But the devil is in the detail. Is the Sun capable of printing a full and frank apology?  I don't think anything short of naming the sources who wrongly briefed them will be frank enough. I don't think they would go far enough in their apology to appear to be genuinely contrite.

I cannot see Kelvin Mackenzie ever stopping being boycotted and reviled. He does not have the humility in him, even if he had the will. (And OT, but wasn't yesterday shitty enough without putting that c*nt on QT)?

That's a fair assessment SP - agree it would probably take something 'more' than a change of ownership (i.e. as you say a full and frank apology) for attitudes to even begin to change, but even then it would be difficult.

Agree, the McKenzie issue is separate and I don't see that ever changing, whatever the lying twat comes out with inthe future. Don't often watch QT to be honest (I thinkit's a pretty pointless programme), but I did hear he was on it.

Desmond is a seedy pornographer and every paper he owns is of such a terrible quality and almost single issue obsession that I can't see many right thinking reds even giving a change in ownership the time of day.

the sun is the sun, it is too entrenched in its past, tradition, readership, agendas, etc.......anyone buying it is trying to trade on its readership, not take it away and change its principles.......which is just as bad

pls additional future readers increases its value and the profit pocketed by murdoch and his cronies

If he bought it and the paper offered a full, complete and detailed apology condemning its own earlier actions, then I think we could finally move on from it. Still wouldn't buy it though personally.
Football has reached the ninth gate of farce and pathetic, unbelievable trite nonsense. It's supposed to be a game and it's turned into pantomime, hype, quilts and bellends.

Quick Answer:  No.
Rather a day as a lion than a lifetime as a sheep.

I can only be nice to one person a day.  Today is not your day.  Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.
I tried being reasonable.  I didn't like it.

If Desmond buys the S*n all he'd be doing is reserving the final prong of the the white hot trident that Murdoch and Mackenzie are going to be sodomized by in hell.

I personally don't understand why some people still want an apology. Wouldn't make a bit of difference to me. Would never go near it.

As for 'if someone took it over and the gave a full apology....'
in that case an apology would be worthless and so would mean f**k all anyway.

Do any actual "human beings" actually buy, and read The S*n/Star/Mirror?,
I mean, which neanderthal enjoys seeing a headline such as this;

http://www.in.com/news/sports/fullstory-job-done-now-for-the-hun-14419381-3a5c8ea27170b25836fe295692e96e75c637128d-1.html
(couldn't find a picture of it)
or another corker from the history books;

I mean the (ex)broadsheets are little better, so here in the UK we are essentially screwed when it comes to buying a daily newspaper ffs.

"There are places I remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all"
