Anti Gillett and Hicks 'anthem'
« on: May 20, 2010, 08:40:05 AM »
Tune is here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54PDlicm_94

(Starts 00:36 to 01:48)

(or on i-Tunes it's track 10 - ('March to Battle Across the Rio Grande') - on the 'San Patricio' album)

We are the Sons of Anfield
A proud and gallant band
You'll see no white flag flying
Within our red command.

We are the Sons of Anfield
We have just one demand:
To see the Yankees running
Back home to Uncle Sam.

We are the Sons of Anfield
A proud and gallant band
You'll see no white flag flying
Within our red command.

So we just keep shtum until they're gone?
Don't be daft lad. We keep pushing till they cross the Rio Grande.

Way back, about 10 stone ago, I used to play football for a Mexican team, Nosotros (Us). One of the first things the lad's asked me about was the San Patricio's. I'd never heard of them, but they soon educated me on them. And, considering our own Irish heritage, I love the idea. Not many would understand why the song was being sung (Even some of our own supporters as to why we was even singing about chasing Yanks, judging by the last comment) but I like it meself....
And before anyone calls me anti-American... I lived there for many years. I like America and American people. In fact, I like them that much, I even made one. She still lives there and I visit her as often as I can.

PS...
In the war between Chile and Peru/Bolivia, many Irish joined with the Chileans. One San Patricio (Can't think of his name off the top of my head. It maybe Newell (as in Newell Old Boys) went on to become President of Chile. And his best mate, a Scouser, became the Admiral of the Chilean navy. Look through South American football, you'll find loads of teams with English/Irish names... even Everton. And considering what Hicks done in Brazil, why not? I think it would be sort of apt meself....
And eh, a bit of Paddy Marachi on the Kop might just wake the fucker up.

Speaking of an anthem, I thought a while back why not a song, as in a single, which could be released to help raise awarness of what they are doing to our club? I mentioned it to James Walsh of Starsailor on Twitter and he said 'good idea'. Don't know how to move it on from there like but there's loads of Reds involved in music - Coral singer, John Power, Echo and the Bunnymen, singer in the Bluetones etc etc; I was thinking some kind of collective - like with the Hillsborough song.

Love Ry Cooder and his album with the Chieftans. The album tracks a great story - read up on it if you haven't already. Went to see him at the Phil a few months back. Great tune, this too.

Fantastic tune I can just hear it being belted out at Anfield (so long as the marching rythm is adhered to that is!)

Hicks isn't a yankee though is he - he's a cowboy from down south them boys was confederates weren't they?

and it has an anti-american vibe which isn't useful - its not about them being american its about them being lying, cheating, parasites - could replace 'Yankee's' with 'Owners' I guess

would fit with a declaration of independence though

Love the song and the sentiment, but i fear that some of our bigoted supporters might resent the Irish history to the song. I was berated and offered the option of a fight when i dared to applaud the Celtic supporters who paraded their Hillsborough remember the 96 flag two seasons ago at Anfield. Maybe a random loon but i fear not.

What?! Surely a random loon! I was at Anfield in 2003 for the Celtic UEFA cup match, was in the main stand but their fans were everywhere, all along the Kemlyn Road too. After they won everyone was shaking hands and applauding one another. Not a hint of nastiness. And considering we sing FOAR I can't see anyone taking offense at this.

I love it by the way!

I remember a very warm response for that flag but, of course, maybe a few could find issue with it, (as a lad i remember loads of half and half beanies with Liverpool / Rangers). That said FOAR (based on a clearly anti-English song) is belted out by the whole stadium so not sure people think too much about where chants come from

As for the song in question - superb -  but can't see it in a football ground context - not because the words may annoy certain sections of support but just cant see how it woud be performed,

However, whilst I may be a tad too romantic stories like this seem to suit us down to the ground so maybe a flag would work better

'Yanks' might not be correct, but is so much stronger.

There's plenty of stuff in our songs some people might resent, or don't like singing. I'd feel a tad funny singing "we are the sons of Anfield" when i'm a girl. Don't change it, it's a cracking song and maybe someday we won't need that verse anymore and can make up some new ones. :)
