Was too young to ever see Maradona play, but Messi is surely, ability wise, as good as him, right? Yes he hasn't carried a team through a tournament, but he's won just about every single honour possible, more than once, at both individual and club level. And he's what, 24? I don't buy into this argument that the Champions League is bigger than the World Cup, like it or not the World Cup is still the single most prestigious football tournament in the world. However, does he really need to win it to be considered the greatest? What he's doing at the moment is jawdropping, and he's getting better and better, seems a more complete player as every season passes. Surely, when his career is finished, World Cup or not, people will look back and be like 'shit, the things he could do, the sheer amount of goals scored and created, week in week out - he has to be the best ever.' Also, yes Barca are arguably one of the greatest club sides of all time, but is it Messi that makes the team great or the team that makes Messi great? I'd lean towards the former, if only because they look so much more dangerous with him than without. That said, without him they can still systematically destroy the majority of teams they come up against.
On a side note, would love the Argies to win the next World Cup, fantastic team to watch. Outrageous skill, tenacity, gamesmanship, everything. Would be great if it was Messi who lifted it as well, can't help but like his ability and his character. Seems like a really sound guy despite the immense talent. Unlike a certain ex Manc in Madrid.
