Famous people who you have met, what were they like?
« on: March 10, 2010, 02:37:33 PM »
I've been lucky to have met loads of people to do with football, players, managers etc.. But the one that will live me forever was meeting Bill Shankly in my early teen years, even though I was too gobsmacked to say anything to him.
He was brilliant, signing autographs, talking to us etc.., and it's the nearest thing I've felt or imagined what it be like to be standing next to God.

In the music World I managed to back Robert Plant (2 songs) and Ben E King (one song) in the same night, both of them lovely, also managed to meet Jimmy Page that night as well. He was bombed out of his box.

Met Paul McCartney twice, and although he was OK ish the first time, he was an utter bell the 2nd time around.

Loads of others that I'll come back to later when my hangover gets a little better.  :P

Well, they do say that the Beatles are dying in the wrong order :)
She'd say, "Would you stop naming nuts!" And Hubert used to be able to make the sound, he couldn't talk, but he'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut. Pine nut, which is a nut, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut. Red pistachio nut. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut.

I've actually brought a pic in today to show the lads in work.

Its me, and my favourite Liverpool player Steve McMahon.

Pic was taken on the day Rushie resigned for us back in 1988.

I had seen loads of players coming out and getting in their cars.  They all let me stand next to the car and smile for the camera while they sat in the driving seat.

McMahon got out of his car, got me ina headlock for one picture, and in the other just put his arm around me an smiled.

Absolutely made my day .

NFL legend John Elway in january '99, had no idea who he was at the time. Since my uncle was completely starstruck and couldn't master the art of speaking a sentence I asked him, with in my childish innocence why, if he was so rich and famous, he didn't buy nicer pants, and pointed it out that the ones he was wearing were ugly. I mean, I felt sorry for the man wearing those pants, they're ugly. 11 days later the Broncos won the Super Bowl and Elway was MVP, no doubt due to my inspiring question.

Then I came face to face, or technically face to glass, to guy being crushed against the glass to face with Nicklas Lidstrom and he smiled at me, so technically I've met him. Also saw the legendary 95/96 Bulls team at an airport in Atlanta. Was devestated Jordan didn't come and greet me when I saw them, the prick. Saw them again in 97, didn't greet me that time either.

Then I've met Björk several times, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Hermann Hreidarsson, both utter utter c*nts.

Then I've met international superstars James Hetfield (who bought me and my friend a hot dog), Quinten Tarantino that bought me a Brennivín shot very weird guy though but free booze is free booze and then of course the man himself Bill Clinton, who also bought me a hot dog at the same place as Hetfield.

So to summarize frontman of possibly the biggest rock band in the world, former president of America and one of the most famous directors in the world have all me stuff, I told one of the finest quarterback's in history his pants were ugly and the supposedly nice local guys were utter c*nts. Not how I would've predicted it.

What exactly do you do?

I'm a broke ass student, but when I was younger my mom worked for an airline and we have relatives in the states so I went to a lot of sporting events there as a kid. Bill Clinton and Hetfield I met when they came to Iceland, Hetfield I'd knew would be there and since he was in a good mood (said they were the best hot dogs he'd had in years) so he bought one for everyone that was there, Clinton (and the secret service dudes) were there before I got there and I thought since Hetfield did it I might as well ask Clinton, he liked my honesty resourcefulness when I said that I was broke and he had money he could afford to spend so he bought me a hot dog (although I should mention he had a heart attack like a week after he ate them so probably not the smartest thing).

Tarantino I just met down the local pub and he was buying drinks while I was there and I called him a sissy for not handling his shot soo he bought me another one and asked me to explain the secret behind. That's about it.

It's just a series of events that fell into place. It's not like I'm connected or something, although I wish I was.

Been out drinking with Oasis, Liam is a cock, Noel is a good bloke. Was good friends with Mani (Roses/primal scream) as he has a son with a friend of mine, he is a top bloke, really down to earth.
Played a gig with Ash, they were wierd but funny.
See Eddie Butler the rugby commentator quite a lot, he is a decent sort.
Met Alan Kennedy a few years ago, missed my taxi, he gave me a lift back to the moat house, top bloke !

One of nicest people I've ever met.
I got introduced to him at an after dinner thing that I was playing at. Spoke to him for a good hour or so and he was brilliant. About 18 months later I was in a four ball celeb pro/am golf match with him and he remembered me from our previous meeting.

Lovely fella, and an absolute legend.

I once sat next to Michael Chopra in a Japanese restaurant in Newcastle, he was with that bird he would go on to beat up. He also had a ridiculous watch on that was as big as his dinnerplate and looked like it cost more than I earn in a year...what a twat.

Nicest famous person I've ever met was Derren Brown - did a meet and greet thing with him, he was adorable. Smashing chap! (Although I hear he likes to now).

Kevin Spacey impressed me for not freaking out at all the attention he was bring given. He posed for pictures and signed autographs, and didn't seem to bother him.

Think the only other people I've met have been football related. Met alot of past-players, current players and managers down the years - GH, Thommo, Sammy Lee, Rafa a few times, Nigel Spackman (loved this), Danny Murphy was class, Carra, Paul Walsh Rush, Aldridge (always a gent), Alan Kennedy, Phil Neal, Clem, Lawrenson, Hansen and a few others. I remember meeting the Spanish lads - Alonso, Garcia and Nunez shortly after they had signed and not knowing who they really were or which players were whom. I find that funny now.

Met a few tv-football personalities too - Linekar, Matt Smith, Alan Smith (nice guy), Alan McInally. Met Henry Winter too - he was nice and chatted for a while.

To be honest, the only famous person I ever met who I thought was a complete twat was Phil Neal. Didn't want to talk to anyone, came across as moody and arrogant.

Stuart Adamson (Big Country) got to know him really well cos we met so many times (even interviewed him once before a TOTP performance) for the Fan Club magazine that he asked me to write.

Stuart was a fantastic person, never changed from the day I first saw him perform at The Warehouse in Liverpool to sell out massive Arena gigs years later.

He would do anything for you, and was always trying to make the world a better place....RIP mate.

Paul Weller in a newsagents in London. Was a dead nice fella, stopped to talk to me and my dad too.

Did you say "Weller Weller Weller - ooh! Tell me more tell me more..."?

I saw him a few months ago in Gatwick Airport departure lounge with a young lass of about 25 I'd say - total stunner. This was 5 minutes after seeing Sheringham with a bird who was better looking than maybe any other woman I've ever seen on his arm. Footballers eh? Anyway, on Weller, I remember Hassinator commenting 'brave syrup' and that was about spot on I reckon. ;D

Other than that, Ian McCaskill is about the only other one. Can't remember much cos I was bladdered but he did autograph the palm of my left hand.

Agreed x 10. Did a sportsman's dinner for us a few years ago. Couple of years later I was at a "train with a legend " day. Gave it to my lad. Any way its on the day the Road to Istanbul DVD comes out and he is playing it in a room at Anfield while waiting for all the punters to show. Someway into it,  on the screen, appears my lad. Been filmed outside the Millennium stadium. Made a huge fuss of the lad and selected him as his "training partner" for the day. End of the training session (away from Anfield) problem with coaches and AK gets on the phone to sort taxis for all back to the ground. Once he knew all where sorted looks at me and the lad and says " jump in with me".  Gives us a lift back in his Merc. Me, can hardly speak, lad on phone to his mates... Get back to Anfield, Food, Talk etc. He remembered the dinner, introduced us to Doc Johnson and gave us the phone numbers fopr both in case we needed a speaker/ anything again....

Total Gent. Even my Manc mates talk about the Dinner 6 years on, even after we have had a couple of Manc "legends"
Better today than yesterday...........

Once had the pleasure of meeting Tom Finney, who enthusiastically demonstrated the quick drainage ability of Deepdale's plastic pitch by pouring buckets of water repeatedly onto one spot.  Lovely guy and a proper footballing legend.

Met loads of people just to say hi to, but people i have spent quite a bit of time with:

Xabi Alonso = Legend

Luis Garcia = Legend

Nando Morientes = Nice guy, pretty quiet, probs because his English was poor, and my Spanish even worse

Stevie Warnock = Invited me and a mate on his Stag night in town (3 days before i left for Istanbul 2005) didnt go though.

Gazza = Spent the afternoon with him at Universal studios, Orlando, on the day of an Ingurlund game in the '98 world cup. My mother spotted him and asked for an autograph, he got chatting then spent the day with us, going on rides, and even having something to eat together. Really nice man, shame how things have turned out.

Guillem Balague = Been drinking a few times with him, likes his booze, good lad.

Peter Kay - Looked at me as if to say 'what are you bothering me for'.
Rik Mayall - Genuine down-to-earth man.
Guy Ritchie - In Bootle last year when they were filming Sherlock Holmes.Looked like he didn't want to be recognised.
