Car Insurance "/
« on: February 8, 2010, 04:40:43 PM »
I'm 18 live in Essex and buying a 2002 peugeot 106 1.1 independence valued at £1600
Yet I cannot get any insurance below £1700...even with me mum or dad as named driver's and this is with pass plus on it.
Anyone come across any brilliant insurers that are cheap.
Th £1700 quote is from Quinn Direct and is only Third Party Fire and Theft whereas fully comp was around £2000
Any help from any insurance wizards?

You'll get insane costs no matter what, it's the problem of being a teenager.

Don't worry, I just got a £40/80 quid fine when parking for a hospital appointment. Fuck off am I paying it.

If you want it to be cheap you'll need to have one of your parents on as main drive with you either as third party or a named driver on the certificate.

And yes, you've just wasted £100 on pass plus. My driving instructor, a pass plus trained instructor as well, told me not to bother because it very rarely knocks that much off your insurance anyway.

Even if it means sacraficing your NCB it'll work out cheaper for you. Hopefully in a year or two it'll come down significantly enough for you to go as the only named driver.

I was 22 when I learned to drive. Got my first car soon after - 2004 Corsa 25k on the clock. £990 with Quinn Direct for me as named driver, fully-comp. This year when I renewed it - £540.

It stings at first but there's rarely a way around it.

I've been the named driver on my dads policy for two years mate, I paid £1000 the first year and £930 the second. I haven't built up any no claims bonus but the insurers do take into account that I've been driving for 2 years. I've just looked now and I'll be able to afford my own this year.

He's 18. It won't take a significant drop until he's 21 at least...Mines around about what yours is now Ciara. It's not worth being a the main driver on car insurance if you're under 21, it's waaaay too expensive!

Spot on. My mate's 18 and has just bought a £700 car and because he lives with just his mum (who can't drive) he's paying £470 a month, which is truely shocking.

When I passed my test at 18, I got insured on my own for 950 quid..was a 1.3 Golf and it was with Direct Line. All my mates did the whole on their parents policy crap and are still paying top dollar, but I've got a group 18 car now and it only costs me 325 a year. Just keep looking, unless it's gone up that much in that time, you should be able to find a deal there somewhere. You usually end up paying the bastards a similar amount in the end anyway.

Got a quote from aviva earlier of £64 a month (£800 a year) Fully comp
Had my step-dad with his 9+ years no claims as main driver and me as named
He came home from work to tell me you can't have no claims on more than one car :(

You could still use him as the main driver though even with no claims, it'll still be cheaper. Some companies will give No Claims to added drivers too, I know Tescos and Direct Line do.

I've just seen a punto I like, but the insurance is going to be roughly £2000, is it worth just biting the bullet and doing it?
The cars only worth bloody £650.

And can sometime tell me the score regarding Irish reg plates? does it have something to do with the car being written off over here and re-registered there? (unless it was originally registered in Ireland of course)

I used to work for the AA lad, this is the only way of getting the price down unless you either insure a pedal cycle or discover 10 years ncb with your name on, but a word of caution, if you do this it's actually called "fronting" a policy. Whereby you've in effect said to the insurer that your dad/mam/parent is the main driver but in fact you actually are to keep the premiuim low, they can if they prove it to be true withhold any claim and ask you to pay the full policy premiuim.

If you moved all your car's in the household to one provider they can normally give you quite a lot of discount.

I use direct line but there was another on telly (admiral or similar) that discounts for households. So you might not get no claims but you'd be earning a little.

While I was at uni I was named on my mums car despite living 200 miles away but I got 3 years "named driver discount" which is worthless if you moved companies but now helps me a lot.

Insuring a new car for a teenager is a bitch, you're paying the price of your peers being shit drivers and causing a multitude of problems. When I qualified, the best deal for me was a HP 3 year balloon deal on a new Clio with free insurance.

Thats a good idea if you can afford it.

The other thing is (and I'm way over 18, so I don't need to do it), I think it could potentially encourage 18yr olds to go on the road with no insurance. I'm not sure how many do it as I don't know many 18yr olds, but I bet it happens.

No, it has nothing to do with write-offs.  A northern Ireland plate is just as valid as one from England.

I found Direct Line to be the cheapest when I started driving. Still are for me, but I had a falling out with them over proof of NCB, so went elsewhere.

My first car was when I was 22, 1.4 Vauxhall Astra. £1,400. A year later I moved to a 2.0 Mondeo (with full RS bodykit), and the insurance actually went down by £200! So probably is worth going on your parents insurance for a couple of years, once you've got some experience behind you try again.

Its not just about the value of your car. Its the damage you can do with it, you plow into 60k's worth of porsche and it becomes expensive. Not factoring in your claim all it takes is for one in 30 youngsters to do this and they are running at a loss. Thats excluding the personal injury claims/legal expenses/assessors fee's/admin costs/etc. etc.

Where you live is also a massive factor. I got my first car in September, a 1.2l Fiesta Zetec with 0 yrs NCB. To insure in Staffordshire with Direct Line is just shy of £600 fully comp. To insure at my old postcode in Toxteth it was about £1400. Hence why I moved back home. I'm also 23 and female which makes a bit if difference too.

Check the cashback sites e.g. www.topcashback.co.uk and also add a named driver with a clean license thats been held a few years. That tends to reduce it.

I'm 20 and have had my license for 3 years - always been driving but only work vans. I'm supposed to be buying my sisters 57 plate 1.8 vectra off her as she's getting a company car (she's only 2 years older) yet the insurance quotes i'm getting are fucking ridiculous, even with a parent as the main driver with neither of us with previous convictions.

This is even more frustrating considering i've driven all around britain shit loads of times in massive vans due to work, yet they still try charging me more than 'Tina' who past her test a week ago and can barely even drive!

Could this partly be to do with living in merseyside? any ideas on how to reduce it?

I'd just bite the bullet and pay it rather than going as a named driver and not building up any no claims. Passed my test when I was 18, got a Ford KA, about £1500 it was. Paid £2400 with Endsleigh for my 1st years insurance third party. I now have 3 years no claims and a £7000 corsa and I paid £700 fully comp this year.

Postcode is along with age is a major factor, but not just towns, part of towns. A mate of mine has just moved 200 yards and a different postcode and at renewal it went up £80. When he compained they told him it was down to the postcode change. Ironically, he still parks his car in the same communal car park.

Another mate has a BMW 320D, the same age as my M3 and we are both the same age with Full NCB and he still pays more than me and it's all down to his postcode.

Must admit, as someone else said earlier, direct line was the best for me when I got my own car and insurance. Another thing is, even though everyone says it goes down abit when you get to 21, it doesn't, well mine didn't, nor did any of my friends! It's when you're 25 that you see the difference. Now with Lloyds though because they seem to be pretty reasonable, can't wait for December when my accident (god damn taxi driver driving into the back of me!) can be left off and I'll be 25, should be quids in!

Because it still had to be put down as an accident, even though it wasn't my fault. Whether it will actually make a difference I don't know, but that's what direct line told me anyway!!!

having the same problem with insurance atm, I'm 19 and currently insured as second driver on my dads car, managed to get it down to about £900 since his boss has let him insure it at the place he stays when working away, and since he's there more than he's home its worked out well, but him working away a lot causes problems with the car, as he has to take it down there just incase he needs to rush back home.

Currently looking for my own car now, still going to be second driver, but no matter what I find, the insurance is still around about £1,500, and that was on a 1 litre punto worth £500!

You should be fine as long as the third party insurance paid out. Someone ran in the back of me (at fault and mine repaired) and it's on my renewal, but mine went down around £50 this year so it hasn't affected the premium at all.
I might have single handedly ruined Warrington's picture houses, but personally thought my pocket money was better spent at Anfield.
