I fear he will be.

haha, i know where you're coming from... but you know there's a silver lining in there somewhere, the poorer Stewart performs the more pressure Sterling will apply breathing down his neck. Never would Raheem have a better opportunity to jump into that first team. You never know he could also be the kick up the arse Downing needs.

Do purple patches not count or something?

Of course they do, I think you know that I didn't mean that.

It does skew the goalscoring stats slightly though. It's not a true indicator.

Maxi plays the type of football I like, very simple football.  He gambles and attacks the back post, it's a rare and lost quality of many modern footballers who seem to hoard the middle or try and beat the defender and find the roof of the net

If he stays and it's going to cost a fortune in wages we need to be sure he's going to get time on the pitch

Gerrard got a hatrick vs Everton, Suarez got a hatrick vs Norwich - purple patches are good and they affect stats in a good way, no need to belittle stats due to scoring a fine hatrick against Fulham for example.

Maybe not. But look at this season. 6 goals in 21. Compare that to 10 in 35 from last season. That's 2 goals every 7 games. Both seasons. So his purple patch from last season actually continued this season. And his 31 goals in 120 games for Atletico is just slightly lower. I'd say he's performed in line his normal level for the past 15 months.

In the Prem: 57 games, 15 goals. Not bad for a playmaker who plaed all of his games on the wing. Should have played instead of Kuyt any given day, IMHO.

He's averaged nearly 1 in 3 throughout his career, so yeah. Like I said, I'm not ignoring his goal threat or rubbishing it, just thought it was important to note.

He should have played more, that's for certain. Not sure Kuyt is the one who should have stepped aside though. They did fairly well when played together in 10/11.

It was a surprise that he scored so many goals in such a short period of time. I think that was when things finally began to work for him at LFC. Up until then, he had not done that much. But all of a sudden, he found his normal level again. A level he's kept since.

A hat-trick is not a purple patch.

True.

I think he found his best when we were at our best under Dalglish with lots of movement around him in Suarez, Kuyt and Meireles.

Maxi could easily fit into team with a more short passing style of play.

Maxi is an intelligent player, he want's go forward, he's finds fanstastic positions in the box and he wants to score.

I hope he stays.

Do people not remember the countless times he goes missing? The countless times he leaves enrique dealing with 2 players cause his defensive work rate is a joke? ALl people look at when it comes to maxi is he pops up with goals and links up well in attack, sorry but if ur gonna be a midfielder you need to help out at the other end too and thats why kuyt and henderson and bellamy all played ahead of him because they work the whole pitch.

I don't think that is true at all.

Maxi does his bit defensively.

I was never a big fan of Maxi, but I thought he should have been played more last season simply because he often finds himself in the box on the end of tap-ins, a trait absent from the rest of our players.  I'd be happy to let him go, because (I assume, due to him being a free transfer) he is on a high wage and aside from his goals, I don't think he ever really offered that much in terms of build-up play so I'm not sure how he will fit in with Rodger's style.

Regardless of his defensive qualities, in a team that struggled to score goals he should clearly of played more games season gone.. Only bellamy and suarez outscored him I believe, perhaps Gerrard, but I can't confirm that without looking at the stats.
Point is, he was too good for our bench and still is with our current squad. Personally as well I think his defensive qualities are fine. Always puts a shift in (admirable considering his selection rate), which is more than can be said of downing...

I very much agree. It's not like Downing was a gut-busting defensive workhorse, either.

Yeah, Downing was rubbish for the whole of last season as well and still kept getting in the starting XI. Makes you wonder.

Liverpool midfielder Maxi Rodriguez has denied he is on the brink of a move away from Anfield.

Reports in South America have suggested the 31-year-old has agreed a move to Newell's Old Boys - the club where he began his career.

However, Rodriguez, who is back in his native Argentina following the birth of his second daughter, insists the speculation is wide of the mark.

"I do not know where these things come from," he said.

"I have one year left on my contract at Liverpool and did not talk to anybody."

Maxi has so far scored 17 goals in 73 appearances for the Reds.

Intelligent player with clever movement and passes the ball effectively. A very handy option for Rodgers.

Strange, as I thought he was saying farewell to us all in his last game, but I guess he might have had some assurances that he will get proper chance.

I'd love for the club to keep him for another year, at the very least. Footballers with the game intelligence of a player like Maxi are difficult to come by, and I think he'd perform superbly under Rodgers either on the wing or moved more centrally.

Yeah I think had Dalglish stayed, Maxi would have gone as he seemed frustrated at the lack of match time - which I can't blame him.

Now Rodgers is here, he might have changed his tune.

I'm not saying Twitter is the most reliable sources (although 90% of the football press seem to think it is!) But I seem to remember somebody (Kendra who posts on here I think it was) re-tweting a Maxi Rodreguez tweet about him saying he was staying. This happened to be abou 1/2 weeks before Kenny's sacking. Whether or not Maxi or any other players knew of the manager situation before it was broke to the press is anyones guess, but his tweet ws abruptly deleted afterwards. This points to Maxi knowing that Kenny was on his way out, and tried to state it, then backtracked.

Sheer speculation as you can obviously tell, but it just seemed strange to retract such a statement so close to KK's sacking. Rewind the clock a couple of weeks beforehand, and he's waving ta-ra to the Kop. Then blerts out on Twitter that he's staying a week before Kenny has to clear his desk.

11 goals (+2 assists) in his last 16 (incl. 2 subs) league games, 13 (+4 assists) in the last 25 (incl. 4 subs) in all competitions. Even if His Hattricks do slightly distort the stats, he has been playing well and been very productive since the end of last season.

Carra suspected it before Kenny went to America, perhaps the rest of the squad did too.
