Interesting that Paddy Wallace plays for Ireland A, that suggests to me that D'Arcy will start at 12 next week.

England win 17-13. Not a great spectacle but a good win for England never the less.

Jeremy Guscott has questioned Wales' mentality ahead of Saturday's Six Nations opener with England.

Guscott insists the "Welsh psychology is not where it should be" as Wales went from 2008 Grand Slam champions to fourth place the following year.

The former England centre said: "I'd rather coach a Welsh side than England.

"Wales' problem is psychological as they are brilliant players but psychologically they are not as strong as an Ireland. Ireland are winners."

Wales celebrated their first Grand Slam in 27 years in 2005 but slumped in 2006 as coach Mike Ruddock controversially departed.

The Welsh then flopped at the 2007 World Cup - failing to progress out of the pool stages - but Warren Gatland inspired them to a second clean-sweep in four seasons in his first Six Nations Championship as Wales coach.

Gatland's team beat Scotland, England and Italy in the 2009 Six Nations but lost in France before a home defeat by Ireland as Declan Kidney's side won Ireland's first Grand Slam since 1948.

Wales were thrashed on their summer tour to world champions South Africa before suffering autumn Test defeats to southern hemisphere superpowers New Zealand and Australia in Cardiff in November.

Wales are yet to boast a Heineken Cup winning team while three of the last four European champions have been Irish provinces Leinster (2009) and Munster (2006 & 2008).

Ex-British and Irish Lions star Guscott told BBC Wales' Scrum V: "All of that Ireland squad, with with Munster and Leinster and now with Ireland, are winners.

"They know what it is like to win and remember it whereas Welsh players seem to forget too quickly what it is all about because you can't go from being the best one season to fourth best the next.

"And in the autumn series, to be thrashed by Australia was psychologically hugely damaging so that is why Gatland, Edwards and Howley have a job on their hands.

"The Welsh, psychologically, are not where they should be."

Irish team named - O'Gara in, Sexton out. Ferris out too.

Ireland (v Italy): Kearney; Bowe, O’Driscoll (capt), D’Arcy, Trimble; O’Gara, O’Leary; Healy, Flannery, Hayes; O’Callaghan, O’Connell, McLaughlin, D Wallace, Heaslip.
Replacements : Best, Court, Cullen, O'Brien, Reddan, Wallace, Earls.

Interesting that he went with Kevin Mclaughlin at 6 rather than the experience of Quinlan.
Sexton out is a blow, but Ferris is a bigger loss. Trimble is in good form on the wing, and he gets the nod over Earls due to his defence.
He's gone for form on every pick then, given that Darcy is at 12.

Really hope that they recover for the France game. Should be good enough for Italy

You might win but I don't you'll shit 'em...

For once I'm happy with a Johnson selection! Tait at 13 is exciting and it is a statement of intent but I am concerned about him up against Dr Roberts and Shanklin.

And Bruce at 4 with Deacon on the bench. Love that!

I'd have been happier still if Borthwick was nowhere near the squad, and Lawes was in instead.  And I'd have found room for Ashton as well, if I could.  But really not a bad team at all.

haha true, I fucking hate Guscott the patronizing, snide c*nt!!

Pleased and to be quite honest surprised to see Byrne getting his ban reduced and allowing him to play on sat. It'll be a good game, i'm not going to do any predictions because i've just not been able to follow any rugby since the last 6 nations. Caught some of the Lions but that was it, I do know that Byrne is in good form and easily one of the best fullbacks in the world at the moment.

What I do hope is that it's a decent, entertaining game. More ball in hand than a kicking match. Oh and that we beat the English! ;D

Glad I was right.

The loss of Ferris is a bit of a blow but McLaughlin is having a great season for Leinster, and I'm glad Kidney seems to be picking the form players. I wonder whether he'd have gone with ROG if Sexton hadn't been injured?

Getting excited now.

Not too fussed about Ashton. From what I've read they're still a bit worried about his defence. I've given up worrying about Borthwick - until Johnson sacks him off as captain nothing's going to change!

To be honest, I'm not confident, but not worried, if that makes sense?! We didn't have the best Autumn series, but it wasn't too bad, and the main players seem to be in pretty good form, so fingers crossed going against a newly formed england team could be a good opener, here's hoping anyway!!!

first time in ages i've actually been generally optimistic and excited about our midfield combination. just hope they get a chance to show what they can do and it doesn't turn into a kicking contest.

If we get parity up front which I think we will (I certainly think we will win the scrum) then provided we are not conservative behind I think we will sneak a win.

Williams is a decent enough replacement. The Welsh props are better but the English second row is stronger. If Wales can withstand the English opening blast then they could go on to win. Our kicking has to be top notch though...

He's happy to keep the ball in play, banking on the players' fitness and the quality of defence. It's a tough call, both sides can't afford to lose for differing and similar reasons.

That's a very decent looking French team.

Of course it wouldn't be France if they didn't have a flaky out-half. The back row - actually the back 5 - is monsterous.

France being France are liable to beat Scotland by 20 pts or lose 12-9 or something. Still think they should be good enough to win the tournament, espec with Ireland and England at home.

France don't look like they've a recognised front-line kicker in their 15.
I don't think Trinh-Duc even kicks for Montpelier (who lost twice to Connacht - make of that what you will). Parra certainly doesnt kick for Clermont. Jauzion is at best a backup kicker (and not great).

Why do France always pick barmy coaches?
Filthy old alcoholic lying trampy bastard.
Rafa emptied your stadium in the 76th minute you horrible hard-shoulder shitter.
