Calling all helpful computer savvy folk
« on: January 8, 2010, 08:31:08 PM »
I'm having a few issues with a laptop of mine. As you can see I have access to the internet but it is only intermittent, it comes and goes lasting about 5-10 minutes at a time. When it is not working I have tried 'pinging' various sites and it always returns the IP address of that site so I know the router is talking to the internet.

I have spoken to Sky (my ISP) and they have told me it is a problem with my PC and they can no longer help. I've searched loads of sites on the internet looking for solutions but with no joy, would anyone here have any idea what might be wrong with this (2 month old laptop).

Oh, I'm running Windows 7 with IE8, I tried running Firefox and it experienced the same problems. The old laptop won't connect at the same time as the new one either.

upgrade router firmware, upgrade NIC/WLAN drivers.

Does it happen on both direct connection/wireless?

If it's a 2 month old laptop you may want to try the manufacturer as its only 2 months old and will still be under warranty. Have you tried connecting to the router directly with an ethernet cable to see what happens? Have you done virus/trojan/spyware scans? Does your old laptop work fine when connected on its own? I'm no expert but i would delete all connections from  the network and router and start again with your new laptop first, but you really need to supply a bit more info.

It does happen with both cable and wireless. I've tried changing the DNS from automatic to manually inputted but to no avail.

I'll try the router firmware upgrade and report back.

Thanks
