An absolute rock, always dependable and made up for not being lightning fast by his reading of the game. A leader too, and at £2.5m, one of the biggest snips in Premier Leagues history. My defence will be built around:

Well, Arigold, you're attempts to get in first and take the best left back have failed miserably as you overlooked this man. Not a glamourous player but he was first choice left back in what unfortunately will go down as one of the all time great club teams.

Can't appear to bring myself to post them in their Manc guises but Pallister appears to be the only truly class central defender left

Despicable man, but there is no doubting his quality, his leadership, his record, or the fact that he's led one of the other all time great defensive units. Chelsea's defence under Mourinho absolutely took the piss, and this man was, and still is, right at the heart of it. Tidy in distribution, a monster in the air and scores goals to. Its

John Terry

Partly an emotional choice, this man is second only to Fowler as my all time favourite Liverpool player. However, don't let sentiment cloud your thinking - Evans put together one of the best attacking teams of the 90's, and it was based not on a great system, not on supreme management, but on the astounding talents of two young men. Of the two, in terms of how the whole team played, there is no doubt in my mind that my pick was the more crucial, even if Fowler was the best natural finisher I've ever seen. It was this man who supplied his ammo. A player absurdly underused by England, and his best form for them coming, not coincidentally, in England's best tournament since '66 - the Euro '96 effort. You could nominate the Italia '90 team for that accolade, but they didn't actually play all that brilliantly. On the other hand, Telly Vegetables boys (thanks Viz) hammered an awesome Dutch side 4-1, a game in which McManaman's key performance has almost been overlooked.

It's Shaggy:

I'm delighted to have him in my team, we all need some of that creativity from nothing, and Steve McManaman had it in absolute spades. Undoubtedly one of the best ever Premier League attackers. Superb player who played football like you dream about when you're growing up.

Intercontinental Cup: 1995

Arsenal
Premier League: 1997-98
FA Cup: 1998
FA Charity Shield: 1998

He scored 25 goals in 100 league games for Arsenal, 1 in 4 isn't bad for a striker but for an out an out winger like Marc it's phenomenal.

Before moving to Barca for £25mil in 2000.

Gilberto Silva

Completing my central midfield is one of the most underrated midfielders of the noughties. Although he didn't bring the same physicality to the position of defensive midfielder that you'd get from a Keane or a Vieira, he was very effective in protecting his back four. Gilberto was an essential cog in Arsenal's undefeated 2003-04 Premiership season as well as Brazil's World Cup winning team of 2002. As an "invisible wall," he provides seamless protection for the back line while freeing his attacking teammates to advance the ball with reckless abandon. He does so without resorting to fouls (i.e., giving up free kicks in dangerous positions), having been booked only a handful of times each year
