Zlatan Ibrahimovic
« on: December 6, 2009, 01:23:38 PM »
Ten goals and four assists in twelve La Liga matches this season, including the winner against Real Madrid. Barcelona sitting five points clear and haven't been beaten yet this season, scoring 35 goals along the way. I know it wasn't like he was joining Portsmouth but anyone who claimed he'd ruin Barca must be feeling pretty stupid by now.

Does anyone still think he's shit or the most over-rated (arf) player in the world? If you do then I respect your opinion, but it's completely and utterly wrong. Easily one of the top five front men in the world, alongside Torres, Villa, Drogba and whoever else you want to stick in there.

Well in Zlatan lad.

Agree with you there mate, was well impressed with him last night to be honest. His finish against real was something too.

Well, I thought he would do well but I think he is grossly overrated by Swedes (and other continental Europeans) and grossly underrated on RAWK. I would say he ranks alongside Villa. Better than Eto'o but not as good as Torres or Drogba.
C'est la vie.

Chuffed he's doing so well. An Ibrahimovic playing at his best makes watching a game where you don't care about either team much more enjoyable. The acid test as far as convincing people in this country that he was worth the money will come if and when Barca draw an English team in the knockouts. He hasn't done it infront of the Sky or ITV camera's yet, so he must be awful.

He's finally getting the recognition he deserved quite a while ago. I was very surprised in the summer when people thought he wouldn't be a success at barca.
Obviously the season is only 3 months in but all the signs so far point towards him being a very good signing...

I have a feeling that if he does play an English team this season with Barcelona, then he'll show the easily-led mindless SKY viewers exactly what he is capable of. He played against us for Juventus over four years ago in a tie that even Pele would have struggled in given how awesome we were. People have also seen him in an Inter Milan shirt, a team who haven't performed well in Europe since they cheated us out of the final in 1965.

He's class. I didn't rate him as one of the best, thought he was a c*nt and overrated before he went to Barca. But I could see why they wanted to get him in for Eto'o; he's got tremendous ability to hold the ball up, bring others into play and be more integrated into the creative players behind him instead of *just* being the focal point of attack. And he's doing great- scoring the goals and getting the assists as well.

Scored a cracker against Real and another great finish last night.

Guardiola will turn him into one of, if not the, best strikers in the world- ability to score loads and help create them as well.

He's been superb ever since he moved to Juventus. Was great in Ajax and Malmö as well but the quality of the two leagues are questionable, to say the least. The fact that he does not perform (as good) on a national level isnt that strange, we have 2 or 3 quality players in our national side.

I defended him back when he was a donkey to 95% of RAWK.

I still think he's a complete c*nt, but his ability has been there for all to see since his days at Ajax. One of the world's top players.

I tell you what has impressed me, not his scoring because he scored for fun in the league at Inter and Juve but it's the defensive solidity he's brought to the team simply by being a big man good in the air.

You can draw direct parallels between Barca's defending of set pieces and ours, both are zonal, Barca leave one man up top but it's near enough 10 men in and around the box with nobody on the posts.

What happens with Barca this season though is that it seems like every corner they defend Ibrahimovich heads it away like Hyypia.  That really shocked me and was something I had never noticed in him in Italy.

Oh and the mandatory...yeah but do it in the champions league  ;D

When he does it in a big game i might find myself being impressed by him. Still think Eto'o is better, and still think the fee Bara paid was way over the top. He's still some way off Torres, Drogba and Villa.

Absolute codswallop. Define 'a big game' will you? Because he's been doing it in Milan derbies and against Juventus for the past three years. He did it in Euro 2004 against Italy and against Spain in 2008. And now he is doing it against Real Madrid, arguably the biggest club game in club football. He came on half-injured and changed the match.

The fee was over-the-top on paper because he is not £40m better than Eto'o but it's not like they can't afford it. As well as that, take into consideration how Barca wanted to play a different style this season and the fact Eto'o was a moaning fuck who disrupted the dressing room (apparently).

It is indeed, however in those games where he has been required to step up in crucial matches, he hasnt done so. At Inter in the CL, they needed him to step up in must win games but didnt.
Look how he is neutralized against Carragher... Made to look simple.
His recent performances for Sweden has been woeful. Sweden strugged in the Qualifiers because he didnt step up to the task. I am not blaming him totally for the failure, but when Sweden needed him the most, he failed to perform. He thinks and knows he is the best Swedish player, but never acts.
I want to see him come out and perform well in those must win games... If he doesnt, he will always be ordinary in my opinion.
And again, totally arrogant, and even disrespectful against his own supporters. I just dont like him as a person either.

Alright then, using that logic and definition, tell me the 'must win' games other strikers in the world have consistently performed.

And the reason there were no must win games for Ibrahimovic in Serie A was because his goals and overall play meant they had the title won by April.

As I said, we'll see how he does with Barcelona now, a team who doesn't bottle it in Europe like Inter Milan do. He isn't a talisman, he's a goalscorer and a creator. It doesn't means he's shite because he doesn't do an impression of Gerrard in Istanbul every match.

The fee was determined by circumstances. Eto'o was in his last year at Barcelona and Guardiola didn't want him to continue. Eto'o would have left Barcelona next season for free and it is unlikely that Barcelona would have been able to get Ibra for £40 million and one year older.
