Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez: "I am 100% confident we will finish in the top four in the Premier League this season."

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard: "The disappointing thing was having to rely on other people. We have played well today but now we have to try and move on, build on tonight and, with a lot of players coming back from injury, try and win the Europa League. Of course its disappointing. The Champions League is the main trophy at the start of the season but the only consolation now is to try and win the Europa League."

I'm sorry Stevie but, what? Since when was the champions league the main trophy? I'm sure the team, the manager and 99% of the fans wanted the league.

Fucking gutted, but we got what we deserved, Thursday nights here we com. Lets knock the bitters out.

Why the fuck is everyone so caught up with Aquilani only getting one minute tonight? Was it written in his contract that he would get at least 20mins tonight or something.

We won the fucking match for gods sake - thats all that mattered. Aquilani will get games later on, just stop being impatient and chill the fuck out.

Don't think it's so much about tonight though.  He made his debut a month ago and has hardly been seen since.  If he's not fit then he's not fit - don't take up a bench spot with an unfit player.  If he is fit, when is he likely to play?  The season's over in terms of the two main trophies.  What's he 'saving' him for?

Aquillani must have gained tremendous experience in his 30 seconds on the pitch.

Hope Lyon go out in the top 16, shithouses.

He wasn't subbed on for "experience". You'd have thought that was blindingly obvious, no?

Nah, lets all queue up to have a pop at the managers decisions, however pointless they are.

If it weren't for the fact that the young French lad was actually saving us I could have easily mistaken that performance for something out of Houllier's last two seasons.

Terrible.
Was just about to write the same thing. The sight at the end of the match wasn't the only painful sight of the night.

Now that the last game is meaningless I'd like to see as many youngsters as possible, I'd even let McMahon pick the team.

When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
For 96 angles up in the sky
Rafa, we want you to never leave
As long as you’re here we’ll always believe

Though the night seems dark, and we go off to bed
Tomorrow it’s the Europa league, full steam ahead!
Get up you redmen, fight and play
As we look to our heros, Gerrard and Torré

At the end of the storm, there’s a silver lining
And it’s Manu and the bitters who will be doing the whining
So I’ll leave you now with what we stand for
Pride, dignity, passion and the famous Anfield roar!

Oh yeah, poetry's what we need just now, FFS.

Reina

Johnson Carragher Agger Aurelio

Mascherano

Benayoun Gerrard Aquilani Riera

Torres

Give this team a try. A bit of technical ability. Shouldn't be so dire to watch.
So where does Dalglish rank on a wider scale? In football history? Well, there's Maradona, who is another in a category of one. After Maradona comes a group - Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer. In global terms, Dalglish is in the rank below. Briefly - between the decline of Cruyff and the emergence of Maradona - the Scot was the best player in the world.

Maybe he's 75% fit? i.e use him if we're in desperate need, but don't use him if not? Therefore tonight, he wasn't needed since we were winning.

This was really just another wretched game in a thoroughly wretched season. We have been shit since pre-season. Don't know what is wrong, because apart from a bad run of injuries, there is hardly a player in the squad that would want the last 15 games on his cv. I hesitate to say that the players don't want to play for the manager but if it was any other team I would be convinced of it. I know the owners are awful but they don't tell Kuyt to be an embarrassment or the CBs to have forty winks whenever we are facing a corner or the manager to persist with one of the most anti-football midfield pairings I have seen in 37 years of watching us play.

I don't know where this season is going, I honestly wouldn't rule finishing outside the top ten and going nowhere in the cups. By the same token I wouldn't rule out going on a crazy run of wins either, since whatever is wrong seems to defy analysis and could just as easily turn around (And I desperately hope it does).

Well guys, lets be thankful for some amazing memories this competition has given us over five years, the man hurting the most tonight will be rafa.

We have no one else to blame but ourselves, especially late on in both games against Lyon.

You can't do it every year, and the longer we did amazingly in this comp, the harder the fall would be when it came (and less we forget united got knocked out at this stage 3-4 years ago, and their fans felt the pain)

We either feel sorry for ourselves or we move on!!  I say move on!!  We will be back!!

Good post.

Pathetic negative performance with baffling substitutions and a failure to grab the bull by the horns when it was obvious they were getting the upper hand from the 60th minute onwards. Unfortunately these are becoming too frequent under Rafa and he's too stubborn to make obvious changes like bringing Aquilani on half an hour earlier and trying to dominate proceedings in midfield when we were struggling to retain possession and starting to shrink back. A draw at the end if they had scored that chance would have been everything Rafa deserved for his shithouse tactics - and make no bones about it, that's what they were.

Still, I do have faith in the man and still believe he can turn things around, but nothing but a win will do on Sunday after having to stomach that and the prospect of watching Channel 5 on Thursday nights.

Oh, and well in Ngog, another top performance. And thanks Pepe. Thought Dan played well too. Sadly the less said about Insua the better. Fabio to start at LB on Sunday please.

If the only european away game I get chance to go to this year turns out to be at Goodison I won't be too happy :p

We got what we deserved from the performances we gave and can't really have any complaints.

What the point was in bringing on Aquilani with 90 seconds to go was I have no idea.  It's about time he played a full game, only so long you can keep a player on the bench for.  Time to concentrate on securing 4th place and progressing next season.  Winning the Europa and the FA cups would be nice too.

Full game? I'm having wet dreams just imagining him playing for 20 minutes at the moment...

Why is everyone winging about bringing Aquilani on for 30 seconds.

Obviously it was just to waste time, so doesnt really matter who he brings on. May as well bring the best player we have on the bench.

We had to win and we were 1-0 up so obviously rafa wanted to hold onto the win.

Why is anyone winging about tonight, we won the match under pressure, away from home whcih is all we needed to do. Convincing performance or not we still did what we needed to.

The reason we are all pissed off is down to the fact that our previous champs league performances this season have not been good enough to allow us to be in the position to have qualificaiton in our own hands!!!

what a frustrating night. we were poor, very lathargic. and it seems lyon rolled over. though what else would you expect from the french.

but we were slow, short of ideas, nervous in postion and dodgy at the back under minimal pressure. its becoming painful watching us. i can only hope things turn around soon.

also, kuyt god love him does not give us enough in these games.

Never ceases to amaze me how people on an internet forum can think that they could do a better job than one of the best European tacticians in the game today.

Our players commitment does not seem to be all there for me of late, especially tonight against Debrecen they did not seem to want to attack. When we score a goal we seem to sit back and lull about with the ball, with no progression up the field or sense of purpose.

Nobody seems to want to take the game to the opposition, maybe they are just not able to?

Glen Johnson is most fustrating for me, I felt sometimes the ball was layed for him to run onto (often by Masch) and bring up the field, instead, he just played it back to the central defence, killing off all momentum in the attack. We payed 17 million pounds for you Glen, so somebody would create things down the right, not sit there and look pretty. I honestly think Arbeloa would have been more influential tonight, offering more support to Kuyt (who did not have a good game either).

Ngog, he got the goal, (all credit to the lad and is doing brilliant for a 20 year old under the circumstances) is really not capable of leading the line at this level. But he puts the effort in which others do not.

Nobody bar Stevie tonight seemed to have the authority or determination to take the game by the scruff of the neck, yet, it seemed anyone who could of been bothered really had a chance to shine tonight.

What annoy's me most though is of the one in ten, we have won, it came against, Manchester United, probably the best team we have played. Yet we don't f**king turn up for Debrecen.

How come we can perform against Manchester United but not a poor Debrecen?
How come we can outplay Lyon away from home, but be defeated at Anfield?

In my opinion, the players our not committed enough, they our only turning up when they are ordered to. Against Lyon (away) and United, we press, give them no time on the ball, and attack with real purpose and determination. Against Debrecen none of them can be f**king arsed.

Well some of you better start showing some pride and effort, because at the moment this team is embarressing itself. Come on, some body take authority, somebody make a man of themselves on that pitch, one of you put a bit of f**king effort in. For your own dignity, as well as ours.

Roll on the Europa League!

Rafa is shell shocked this season.  One nil up and we can't put the game to bed.  A must win game (turns out it was irrelevant) but he keeps with the defensive midfield partnership.  And we almost paid the penalty in the last minute because we hadn't scored a second.  Baffling, baffling substitutions.

Before the game the main objective was a win and a clean sheet, so I'm happy.  When you're in a bad run, performances take a backseat to results so a 1-0 away in europe will always do for me.  Don't give a shit about any of the other stuff like Aquilani only getting 2 minutes on the pitch....hopefully he'll be able to give us 20 minutes or so on Sunday if he's needed.

Obviously disappointed we're out of the champions league, but we have only ourselves to blame.  I know a lot of people don't like the idea of Thursdays in the Europa League, but I'm really looking forward to it....I'd fucking love to win it.
