In Treatment - Gabriel Byrne
« on: October 5, 2009, 11:50:25 AM »
New show starts on Sky Arts tonight at 10pm.

Its won loads of awards and is only 30 minutes an episode.

From what I gather it runs every weeknight with each day relating to the same characther. I might give it a shot - anyone else seen it - maybe one of our friends from across the pond?  :wave

From HBO website:
An emotional and provocative series, 'In Treatment' brings dynamic focus to a staple of modern society — the psychotherapy session. Adapted from a popular Israeli series, the show follows psychoanalyst Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne, who won a Golden Globe® for his role) through his week, capturing sessions with his patients.

I love this show, red_mark - wasn't incredibly popular over here I don't think but Gabriel Byrne is absolutely amazing, as is Dianne Wiest as his therapist.  I don't believe Byrne has won an Emmy but he certainly deserves one considering each show is basically a two-person, one-act play.  He's on screen constantly with a ton of dialogue to deal with.

A couple of the characters over the two series have been downright annoying but you get drawn into their stories regardless.  The show requires patience but it's well worth it.

Be warned that it can easily eat up a chunk of your time once you get hooked!  As you say, each night features a different patient, with him playing patient on Fridays.  So 2.5 hours per week over 7 weeks.  It adds up!  But really satisfying viewing (even when you want to throttle some of the folks on the couch).

Sounds a bit like the Chris Langham/Paul Whitehouse show Help!

Cheers Connie - saw the first episode tonight Laura I think and its my kind of show, like you say dialogue driven and Byrne is pretty much great in most things.

I took the Golden Globe stuff from HBO's official In Treatment website, he won best Actor in January this year..

Hmm, I may try this out. No access to Sky Arts, but I'll grab the DVDs off LoveFilm. In Treatment could turn into this term's timewaster of choice. ;D

Worth a look I'd say, especially if your signed up to LoveFilm.

It was a good first episode (with Melissa George, she who used to be Angel in Home and Away  :lickin

I know, Sky Arts??? I didn't even know it existed!

Fantastic first episode. Obviously, I won't put any of the details in and spoil it, but Gabriel Byrne really is an outstanding actor. And Melissa George dressed like a scrubber in my office? Well let's just say I'd compromise some professional ethics for her   :lickin

Watched the full week now, got to say seeing the last episode where Gabriel Byrne's character goes to see Diane West makes the show.

It was what I wanted from the Sopranos when Melfi went to see her therapist...scenes that were spoilt in my opinion by melfi's therapist being an annoying little shit bag.

I watched about 3 weeks worth of this last year. The couples therapy got too annoying and I gave up though.

I am massively into this at the moment. Really my type of TV, the writing is class and the acting superb. It also makes me feel good knowing I watch a programme on a show called 'Arts'.  ;)

Considering it's just a couple of people in room just talking this is fascinating viewing.

Came to this thread a bit late, but from what I've read, the real relationship trouble is not between you and your girl, but between you and a small box of Tampax. You obviously need something more substantial in your life like a huge Costco sized box of jam rags, seeing as you're such a massive fucking quim

Quite, I think that shows the strength of the actors in it - Byrne as ever is the kind of actor you cant take your eyes off but the patients are really surprising me. Though I do have to admit to not being able to stand that married couple. Could live without them

Just finished watching the first season of this on DVD. What a show. Character development is amazing. Such depth and so many layers being slowly revealed. As good as Sopranos for me and better than the Wire and Madmen. Which is high praise.

I watched the first season of this a while back. The episodes with the gymnast were my favourites by far, Gabriel Byrne and Mia Wasikowska were outstanding. Good to see her get big roles in big films.

Been meaning to get into this for a while now. I think one of the girls in college has it on DVD so I'll ask her for it in Jan. Haven't a scooby when it comes to torrents. :-\
