Where were you in Istanbul?
« on: October 4, 2009, 11:53:29 PM »
I don't pose this question to Chelsea fans, although at any point they feel confident against us, it is something they should ponder long and hard.

I ask this to our supposed fans. The ones that slag Lucas, Riera, Carragher, Rafa. The ones that become beacons of morality and think people shouldn't bet against our team - rightly or wrongly, betting and personal feeling should always be two separate issues.

Have you not had five years of fantastic moments, thrills, spills and any cliche that can reel off the tongue? Forget Istanbul for a moment if you want to - Old Trafford 2006, Cardiff 2006, Chelsea 2007, Athens, the amazing push for the league last season. We're Liverpool Football Club, we are destined to succeed. We are on our way - Xabi fucking turncoat Alonso or not. Give the team and the manager time, and we will deliver.

Alan Curbishley, Steve Bruce, and whoever the fuck wasn't in Istanbul. Rafa Benitez was. 40,000 reds who bothered going the games were in Istanbul (very idealistic, because some missed it who should have been there, and some who shouldn't were there).

Just think about it. We shouldn't live off Istanbul - but if any event has taught you anything, it should be that those who give up on the team should fuck off, and those who moralise what the correct Liverpool fan is, or moan, should have gone to Graz AK.

So there.

What about those who booed when we lost to Grazer AK? To qualify for the Champions League in August 2004.

On the whole, our fans are bellends.

Good post mate.

A lot of our 'fans' have short memories.  They forget where we were when Rafa took over.  The deadwood he had to get rid of etc etc.  A lot of people also choose to ignore the ridiculously high standards that are now set in the Premier League.  Come on, we lost two fucking games last season, TWO!!

Yes we've had an indifferent start to this season.  But there's still 30 league games left and all the other cups to play for.

Be fucking proud and remember the great moments we've been treated to in the last few years.  There's more to come.

Oh, and to answer the question in the title:  Istanbul.

The point isn't if you were in Istanbul mate, I am not suggesting that - one of my best mates (who posts on here) didn't go and he is a better bloody Red than me most of the time even if he is a wool.  ;)

It is the idea of spiritually, where the fuck were you? Did you only start supporting us in the past 3 years or something? Absolute knobheads, the lot of them.

Spot on L6- but there is a large amount of idiots out there.

Some have short memories and don't really understand what a fan is.
We all work with them they spot stuff like

"how did we get on at the weekend"
"we should sack rafa, he knows fuck all"
"that Lucas is shite"

To which the correct responses are

"check the Internet"
"fuck off" and
"fuck off"
Luis Suarez is the Andy Kaufman of football. Most people don't get him but those that do, they love him

Too right.

Got in a right state with some Glasweigan twat who was a fan, saying Rafa should be sacked. Some sound lads on here, and at the games I've made friends with over the years, but there's some right thick twats as well.

It isn't even about that match, but it is the clear distinction when people expected it every single year. You know what, if you don't like it, support someone else - and don't have a go at people who have been all over the shop with the Redmen, they are the lifeblood of this club and forever will be.

Hear hear.

Shocking that 'fans' are so willing to write the team off at the earliest possible opportunity. 90 points to play for and already we've got 'no chance' and Rafa needs to 'walk alone' (from some imbecile in the 'Liverpool are Shite' thread).

For example, take the dickheads that seem to enjoy seeing Lucas misplace a pass because it will 'prove them right' and disprove Rafael Benitez, who apparently doesn't know as much as them, despite the fact he spends 12 hours a day at Melwood watching video after video, training the team meticulously.

Anyone fan who is unwilling to support the players wearing the red shirt or the manager on a match day does not deserve to be associated with the club in any way, shape or form.

Na I know that wasn't the point of it, but I'm proud to say I was there (not that it makes me more or less of a fan than anyone).  But not as proud to say that I'll back every man in red through the good and bad times.  Sometimes I actually feel more proud when we lose.  Sounds strange and it's quite hard to explain.

On the whole, our fans are bellends.

Some of them are lad......without a doubt, and that just means that true supporters not only have to vocally carry their team through adversity, they have the added burden of having to carry some of the team's [ahem] supporters through adversity also.

Which means that not only does the team need support, a fair percentage of the team's supporters need support also, and come the hour of adversity...[which it always will]....if you're a supporter who actually needs support yourself....then what the fuck kind of supporter are you?....and of what real use are you when it comes to buttressing your team?

I wasn't in Istanbul but was in the Kemlyn for that one!

Probably very simplistic but I guess the 'new breed' or clueless whoppers, whatever you want to call them is the price we pay for our success. It's a price worth paying in my book but I say that firmly from the comfort of my armchair these days.

Every office/school/uni has it's fair share of idiot, ignorant fans and by law of averages some will support us. You'd think they would bother to learn the history and tradition of what supporting us is all about but obviously not.

Having said all that, there are some right moany old bastards who go week in week out near my Dad's spec in the Lower Centenary so maybe it's always been this way, it just always seems worse after a painful defeat?

Can I ask what triggered this thread? Comments in here or at the game?

And nando nando - welcome mate, good points but I think the 'Liverpool are shite' thread is very tongue in cheek so don't read too much into that.

Good shout - that's the nadir for me. Watching Sean Dundee's cameo, Ian Marshall outpacing our defence to score and getting news of United winning in the space of about 10 minutes. People want to remember how far we have come.

If anyone doubted the character of this team.........which has been instilled by a certain rotund Spanish gentleman who's wife has a penchant for quality timepieces.

They should cast their mind back to Old Trafford last season.

It wasn't the scoreline, it wasn't really the victory, it was a group of lads from all over the world who turned up and said to the famous Man Utd......."Who the fucking hell are you" and took them head on after going a goal behind.

It may have escaped some peoples memory but a certain Spanish midfielder wasn't playing that day.
In his place was a young Brazilian boy who helped to boss the midfield.

We tore at them like a pack of dogs and kept on..and on and on.

That belief and attitude doesn't leave you as a player.

However it seems it can if you are a 'supporter'.

Enjoy each season for what it is. A roller coaster that each year pulls out just about every emotion known to mankind, quite possibly in the same 90 mins.

Some of those seasons will live with us forever, some will be quickly forgotten. Maybe one or two will also be remembered for the "if only's"?

I've had some unforgettable moments going to matches that will stay imprinted for life, even when the result wasn't right.

Good post that, sobered me up a bit as well, the board seems pretty chaotic tonight simply because we lost a fairly even, fairly scrappy (IMO) game against a well drilled Chelsea side who took their chance.  The problem seems to be the complete lack of rationality between when we win a game and when we lose a game.  If we win everythings rosy, whether we battered 'em or grinded out a 1-0 it's taken as a positive, if we lose the naysayers are everywhere with Lucas is shite, Carra's past it etc, reactionary bollocks (reasoned debate's obviously another matter).  I'll always remember seeing an interview with Bob Paisley in the late seventies when there was a few whispers that Anfield was going quiet, the players should be doing the business anyhow, especially on their wages etc.  Bob's response was that with a little bit of encouragement they could do better still, and at the end of the day that should be what we are all there for shouldn't it, whether at the match or not, it should be a collective will to win, a will thats been bred in us as a club and hopefully as a set of supporters since Bill Shankly, and when we do win we can all enjoy the success.

And to answer the original post, nah wasn't there, and in the immediate aftermath I often regretted not being there, but then i thought about it and really even if i'd have been watching it on a black and white 14 inch tele by myself when Dudek saved that penalty the feeling would have been the same as if i'd have been in those stands.

Sorry L6, but you've stepped over the mark here. You seem to think that supporting Liverpool FC is a matter of faith, belief, and that the word 'support' means something, like you support someone who needs a hand and a kind word, like you support someone in your family, especially when they are down and having a hard time.

In reality, supporting Liverpool FC is like having a pet dog that can do tricks for you on demand for the benefit of you, and that dog should be whipped when he doesn't chase his tail adequately. I mean just imagine, you lose face in front of other people because of him when he lets you down, he deserves to be whipped.

Enough romantic nonsense, the dog needs to be whipped.

If there is one club which I would believe in, to come back and show their best when are down, I would pick Liverpool. We've shown every single fucking time that we should not be counted out. Plenty of famous instances, where we have come back from situations and turned games around. The last instance was the previous season, where we need a win at OT to have realistic hopes of the title. A place where we hadn't won for years. Did we fucking lose heart? No. We went out and gave the champions a beating at their home (and that was without Xabi fucking Alonso).

If you really can believe in the team, then you have no right to enjoy the pleasures the team gets you. We lost to a Chelsea team, tipped by many to become champions in May, at their home ground, but not without giving them a tough fight. If you can take heart from something, then I suggest that you look at the game again, and notice the performances of players who have come in for stick recently.

And if you can't take heart from that, then atleast be proud of the fact that you have supporters who went to the Bridge and outsung the home crowd. And, that you have players with class who will not cheat during a game.

Nah mate you know what I'm saying, it's not about him in particular. Some things/players are well worth a moan on any given day (on a forum not at the match). - doesn't make you less of a fan. In fact if you haven't criticised any Liverpool player ever you should be Sainted ;)

Only from people who haven't got a clue about the game.

And all they see of the match is highlights on match of the day.

Sack zonal rotation.

That would be a boss banner.
