GAA Hurling & Football Team of the Decade Debate 2000 - 2009.
« on: September 23, 2009, 09:52:23 PM »
Billy this deserves its own thread.

Anyone up for a debate on the team of the decade? I've had a good think about this and this is what I've come up with for both codes. If I've left any players out who you think merit inclusion then please share. Bear in mind that I've selected these players based on their overall contributions to their chosen codes between the years 2000 to 2009.

In the football Billy stick Ciaran McGeeny in Centre Half back and put Seamus Moynihan in Full Back. I'll do mine soon-ish.

Surely DJ Carey should be in there? And Cusack in his prime was better than Cummins.

I don't think he should be. By the time the noughties rolled around he was on the wane. The only game that I can recall in this decade where he really stood out and showed glimpses of his old self was against Clare in the 2002 final. I'm not saying the guy faded completely in his latter years, it's just that his best days were in the 90's. Another blot on his CV is the fact that he was held scoreless in 2 All Ireland finals. If I were picking a team of the 90's though then DJ would be the first name on my list, no doubt.

Good team Mo. Valid cases could be made for all those players. The only player that raised my eyebrow slightly is Cha Fitzpatrick. He's a cracking hurler but I'm not sure if he's done enough to get in. He really only started to find his feet at senior level in 2006. He had 2 great seasons in 07 and 08, but missed alot of this season due to his mumps illness. He's really only had 2 stand out seasons. He's still young though, his best hurling is yet to come. Colin Lynch would be further up the ladder of contention than Cha IMO. As would Tony Browne

Yeah Cha was a sticky one alright but i think like Jerry he won 3 consecutive all stars in the middle which is why i think they'd have been some formation. As i said you could nearly pick a completly second team to give them a great game
