'Don't Buy The S*n' Blimp - Update

Contributions towards the Don't Buy The Sun blimp had started to stall at between a third and half of what we needed, so I've been trying to see if there was a way of bringing the budget in a little.

One cost that was always movable was getting the "DON'T BUY THE SUN" message printed on each side, which actually worked out almost as expensive as the blimp itself. It's also been dawning on me with every passing week that there are so many causes close to our hearts that the blimp could be used to advertise that we'd be as well just getting a blank one and buying banners for each of these. So, I've ditched the printing.

And this is where we are - the well is now dry, having been spent on:

A 7m-long blimp, white with red tail-fins (currently naked)
Tether rope
Safe storage bag
Big fuck-off gloves to haul the bastard down after a flight
Several reels of industrial-strength velcro

So, where this leaves us is very, very straightforward: we need banners, and we need helium.

The blimp has ties for banners, but speaking to people in the industry, the velcro will be invaluable for making sure whatever banners we put on stay in place.

Many of you lot know the world of banners a lot better than I do, but even so I reckon we're still at least £300 short of having banners in the air for a couple of home games, and probably more like £400.

Also, the ties are for banners covering an area of 2.25m x 1.5m, which is almost a little bit of a waste of a 7m-long blimp, so what we could feasibly do is get individual PVC lettering printed up and back them with velcro to use more of the surface area.

Regardless, none of this can happen without more contributions.

The advantage of the this type of blimp is that you can change the message on it (putting different banners on it) and I think the plan is that it can be used to have messages such as 'Yanks Out' etc.

Just an idea. Maybe if you took some photos of the blimp and posted them on here and other fan sites it would give everyone a nice visual and help you to raise funds.

Agree with this but where will the blimp be tethered and raised from? if its from inside the ground or on property owned by the club what is the likelihood of getting agreement? and if its from ouside of land owned by the club what kind of publicity will it generate?

That works well ... very few letters used but straight to the point.  Anything more than that and it loses impact.

If your having problem sending through paypal, try typing the email address out instead of copying and pasting, that should work.

A lot of payments have come in the last 24 hours, if they keep coming in, maybe it will cover costs for a selection of banners.

If you could use both sides could you do something like Yanks Out on one side and hire out the other side for business advertising, maybe even the advertise side could pay for your message for a couple of weeks. Just an idea don't know the rules or ethics of it.

Here's an update

My original idea for the blimp came in the run up to the 20th anniversary earlier in the year. Unfortunately it cropped up far too close to April 15th to act on it, but the longer the year's gone on, the more I've looked into it and the more convinced I became that it had to be done.

Similarly, while time's passed, it's become clear that there are a number of campaigns close to Liverpool fans' hearts that the blimp could be used to push, and that's why it was imperative to me it had to be possible to interchange banners on the sides.

Make no mistake, this is primarily a Don't Buy The Sun blimp. With more and more fans travelling from overseas that aren't familiar with our club's history, the more opportunities there have been for The Sun to try and get a foothold in the city. Coupled with this is growing apathy to the boycott among younger fans - I've been in many train carriages and coaches heading from south to north where I've been stunned to hear a scouse accent talking about the game and subsequently see that they're reading that particular paper.

As boycotts go, 20 years on ours is still extremely strong, but unless we act now to reinforce it, apathy will swell, and the strength of the boycott will erode. My wife is vegetarian and won't touch meat because that's who she is. In my eyes, we are Liverpool and we won't touch The Sun - that's who we are. The schoolkids of the city from the late-80s and early-90s are in no question about this, but those born today? I don't see it ingrained in them in quite the same way.

To be absolutely clear though - "Justice For The 96", "Hicks & Gillett OUT", hopefully even "Welcome Home Michael" before too long - all of these and more are possible and plausible now we have a blimp in hand. If you contribute to the blimp fund, you're potentially contributing to all of these campaigns.

The initial push is for the blimp (now bought), "Don't Buy The Sun" banners and enough helium for its maiden flights - that's what the first people throwing in thought they were contributing to, and that's what's absolutely going to happen. Once we're there (and I'm delighted to say we are almost there), we can definitely look beyond, and we'd be mad not to. There's too much shit going on to ignore, frankly.

I private messaged the guy telling him to take it off, and to be fair he was very polite but asked why!

The guy was africian, and i know with a global fan base not everyone knows about the boycott, so that means we need to worker harder!

Lads - bit of an emergency here.

The plan is to give the blimp its debut in the weekend of the Arsenal game next month.

Due to a fuck up and miscommunication between me and a mate, I've suddenly got until tomorrow afternoon to come up with a 1:50,000 OS Landranger map of the area of Anfield that takes in the HJC Shop.

Absolutely has to be that exact kind of map at that scale.

I really am flat-arsed broke without a pot to piss in, but I'm happy to give up my weekly £10 attempt at human contact to that big blimp in the sky. As good as it it is to have Michaeal Shields home, he IS home. IMHO the message should stick to 'Don't read the Sun' and some 'fuck off' message sentiment to the cowboys. £10 out of my slummy/socialising jar winging its way to you as we speak.

Yeah, the permission from the CAA wasn't granted in time, so it won't be up for the Arsenal game. But I imagine it will be soon, although there's no date penned in.

This is from over on raotl. I hope someone may be able to help this lad who has put a great deal of effort into this venture. We can't let it fail at the final hurdle. Oh and can someone hopefully help him out with a spare for the derby.

I need to speak to Gerry HJC to be 100% sure, but it's sounding like - contrary to what several people had led me to believe - the HJC shop isn't suitable to moor the blimp.

I had been told there was a load of clear space out the back. Any phone cables hanging over, spiky fence or anything? Aw no, none of that.

Only it turns out there's a) not enough space and b) barbed wire and glass cemented into the top of the walls. A million miles from being a safe place to moor it, in other words.

Fucked off doesn't even come close.

I know there were some other suggestions for places to moor it, but we can't do anything for at least a month because of the way the paperwork works, and frankly it needs someone else to sort from that end instead of this.

I'd already booked a room for derby weekend so I could bring everything up and get it sorted. Haven't got a ticket for the game or anything, so it's basically a wasted weekend from that point of view.

What I'm thinking now is just bring the stuff up, see if Gerry minds it all living at the HJC shop, and let someone local look after it.

I don't mind helping out when it does get up and running, but as for leading the charge with it I'm bowing out I'm afraid.

Sorry if anyone's disappointed by this, but trust me you're not half as disappointed as I am.

Only sensible idea I can think of is The SOS, many clued up people with connections, they might be able to help.

try the other LFC sites, see what the reaction is like?
