Tony Barrett
« on: July 8, 2009, 08:53:16 am »
Hi.
DOn't know where to post this, but i reckon the mods will put it in the right place.

This morning it's a rumour on the website for the official Liverpool supporters club of Scandinavia, stating that Tony Barrett is on his way out of Liverpool Echo.
Normally www.liverpool.no is a very reliable source.
Anyone else heard about this?
And could he play!

someone on here yesterday said he's off to the times
"Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes,
of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass.
It is terribly simple."

Off to the Times for 4m.

He is going to be hard to replace. The Echo will surely miss him.

He'll be very difficult to replace, always enjoy reading his pieces and I've missed his contributions over the last few weeks. I just assumed he was on holiday.  Have any names been mentioned as a replacement? I don't really think James Pearce cuts it currently.
Brian Reade - "Rafa Benitez was many things at Liverpool but unlike every manager since Kenny Dalglish, he was not a failure. Indeed a majority of Liverpudlians will remember him as a legend. Because like Bill Shankly, on more days and nights than those expert pundits ever care to recall, he made the people happy".

If it's true, good luck to him.  His pieces are always interesting and pretty much the only ones that I would consider to have any truth in them whatsoever when it comes to Liverpool.

On the plus side, at least it'll mean one decent journalist in a national paper being able to get some truths out about the club.  Which'll be a nice change!

Ex Echo,TB off to the Times!

I guess reporters gravitate to the quality of paper they deserve. TB to the Times, Bascome to the NOTW where he fills the BBC gossip column up with his made up stories.

Good luck to the lad - he'll be a bit lonely being the only decent journalist at any National newspaper in England.

I might even start buying the Times. He'll certainly show all the idiots up as the clueless morons that they are.

He won't be lonely, he'll have Tony Evans to keep him company.
Although they might both stink of rat piss.

I feel the same with James Pearce i might be a bit paranoid but the articles seem to be slanted against us and seem to be based on what the national press are saying.

maybe he hasn't got the contacts TB had or he has had no access to genuine insider info because they are all on holiday but he does seem a bit of a 'DAVE PRENTICE' in the way he writes.

Anyway good luck to TB an excellent reporter and at least the times should be good for LFC stories with Tony Evans Oli Kay and Tony Barrett

Made up for Tony and good to see him get recognised on a national scale, working alongside another couple of reds won't hurt either.

So, are the Echo going to recruit internally then or recruit externally like they did for Tony? Anyone on here going to have a go if that happens? Hopefully they get someone decent in (ie: far away from the David Prentice school of writing as is possible).

Is TB covering the North West patch for The Times? (assuming this is part of a reshuffle that began when Martin Samuel left.) ATM none of the Echo's LFC reports carries any weight or gravitas. The minute TB came back from holiday and filed that one report it was different. Hope he can keep the contacts when he transfers over to a national.

There are loads of good journalists around, but if you're talking sports reporters specifically Brian Reade, Oliver Kay and at times Henry Winter are top notch.

To be fair Brian Reade's general comment pieces are far better than his old sports reports. His book 43 years... is great. Kay and Winter know their stuff, I'm surprised to hear you say that. I don't agree with everything they say, but that is impossible.
