Sorry if a thread like this has already been opened but I just haven't seen any advertises of this competition on tv or over the net and I thought you might have a little idea when does it kick off?

Cheers.

Opening matches next Sunday the 14th.  Not sure who's televising it in the UK but ESPN is carrying it Stateside.  Believe South Africa v Iraq is the first match (4pm your time) with Spain v New Zealand to follow at 8:30pm?

Just wrap Torres in swaddling clothes and I'll be happy.

14th to 21st according to FIFA site.

The one is Germany in '05 was a good watch, despite that massive deluge of rain in Frankfurt that almost collapsed the roof!

Final is Sunday the 28th.

Does an 8-team tournament *really* need a 3rd place match?  ???

I do look forward to seeing how well it runs though it'll have a tiny fraction of the attendance/attention the WC will have next year.

If the US plays like they did tonight, we'll be lucky to get a result in any of our games. Brutal.

Hopefully the South African stadiums don't have pitches made out of concrete.

depends what team will turn out, but they have a good expereinced coach in Bora who usually gets teams to over perform

I'm a bit pissed our boys are going over at all for yet another meaningless football tournament. Torres needs the rest for starters. Arbeloa and Xabi too played a full season already and now they're going off to play in this heap of shit in god knows what kind of conditions. What's the bets our lads don't get treated with the same kind of kid gloves as those at Barca and Real.

exactly what i was thinking after reading that

This is ridiculous. Let's remember the fact that only one Liverpool player was a starter for Spain in Euro. Now, arguably it is 2, and you come up with this. Ridiculous.

It's not entirely meaningless. The purpose of it (other than to make FIFA richer) is a logisitcal "dry run" for the following years world cup. That's why its now held in the WC host country.

What exactly are these 'kid gloves'?  Xavi, Iniesta and Puyol started all the games in the Euros except for the 3rd group game when they'd already sewn up a quarterfinals slot.  So did Sergio Ramos.  Sorry Bob, Xxavvi can get pretty blinkered and abrasive sometimes but that's a really unreasonable comment to make.

Well that will kind of prove my point if we see Riera and Arbeloa play in these games then won't it?

Iniesta was injured to Riera took his slot, and Arbeloa came off to give Ramos a go at the game.  Don't see where the 'kid gloves' are in that?  I'm not comparing the merits of both tournaments at all, I'm just bringing up that I don't see this unfair favoritism of Barcelona/Real Madrid that you hint about.  Where exactly is it and how is it harming our players?

It's just another rant about international competitions, which is a fair enough POV - the Confederations Cup is a nuisance for our players who haven't had a proper pre-season or holiday - but where is it that Liverpool players are being unfairly burdened with playing time to give their Barça counterparts a rest for example?  Besides Iniesta pulling out of injury.

Confirmed Italy Squad

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Marco Amelia (Palermo), Morgan De Sanctis (Galatasaray)

Defenders: Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Andrea Dossena (Liverpool), Alessandro Gamberini (Fiorentina), Fabio Grosso (Olympique Lyon), Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus), Davide Santon (Inter Milan), Gianluca Zambrotta (AC Milan)

Midfielders: Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan)

Forwards:
Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), Simone Pepe (Udinese), Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli), Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal), Luca Toni (Bayern Munich)

First Team / XI ;

------------------------------Buffon--------------------------

Zambrotta--------Cannavaro-----------Chiellini----------Grosso

-----------------------------Gattuso--------------------------

-----------------De Rossi----------------Pirlo------------------

Pepe-----------------------------------------------Quagliarella

-------------------------------Toni---------------------------

That would be my preferred starting line up but I reckon either Camro or Iaquinta will start at right wing, I reckon we'll win the Cup beating Spain in the final!

Because del Bosque wanted him to get a goal I reckon.

Who's Spain's first match in the Confederations Cup?  If it's a minnow like New Zealand Torres will probably start on the bench.

Is that meant to be not one single inter player? or no inter player? or just thats there is only one inter player because Davide Santon (Inter Milan) is in the squad

Line up of team Iraq, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Egypt, United States, Italy, Spain.

14th of June

South Africa V Iraq 15.00
Spain  V New Zealand 19.30

15th of June

Brazil V Egypt 15.00
United States V Italy 19.30

17th of June

Spain V Iraq 15.00
South Africa V New Zealand 19.30

18th of June

United States V Brazil 15.00
Egypt V Italy 19.30

20th of June

Iraq V New Zealand 19.30
Spain V South Africa 19.30

21st of June

Italy V Brazil 19.30
Egypt V United States 19.30

24th of June Semi Final teams to be decided.
28th of June Final teams to be decided.

Our pre season training starts in a little over two weeks time and half of our team play for Spain.

The Olypmics had an effect on Babel, Masch and Lucas last season as did the Euro's on Torres.

Our players wont have hardly had a holiday or time off with other Internationals being played all over the world either.

Looking at the line up in the Confederations Cup you would assume the final will be Spain V Brazil there is no one else to touch them two teams.
How is this going to effect our pre season training and friendlies?

judging by del bosque's comments on why he kept Torres on for whole of the last friendly, They are taking this cup very seriously and there is no chance of resting him.

hopefully against the likes of new zealand etc fernando wont be played at all

guess alonso may have to play in all matches :(

Some decent games on there. I will watch a few of them when I come in from work. Look forward to Spain vs SA next Sat and thanks to the Beeb, the evening games are on BBC 3.

Hope Spain win this just to add to the feel-good factor from last year. The experience of winning that trophy can only benefit us as a club.
