Some of the comments in ere are astonishing ,
he's a good player , he's homegrown , a full international , has 4 years left on his contract and has had interest from
Utd , Chelsea , Manchester City - ffs people lets support the manager and if the player signs lets support him aswell . . .

We are always moaning about how we go for cheap targets and dont spend enough on quality players and yet he we are doing exactly that and its all fuckin doom and gloom . . .

Will you ever be satisified ? ? ?
Just get behind the team please

But then Chelsea and Man City wanted to pay pretty much the same for him as we are reported to be paying, so what does that tell you??
Inflate the price so it restricts us to signing someone else?! He is so overrated and cant defend! FFS... I am not happy... 17 million for a right back of his quality?! rediculous!

Would he be worth 17 million if he changed his name to Glenz Johnsiniho?

no
£15m? It seems low, but what people have to remember is that the fee is irrelevant.

Pay whatever they want just for the satisfaction of getting Rafas first choice target for once.

I doubt this will be the biggest signing of the season aswell.

I think you've just described Dani Alves when we were linked with him.

Incase you haven't seen, the transfer market this summer is vastly inflated. So we are going to get ripped off, but if it's the difference between 1st and 2nd.. then its worth every penny.

Would you all PLEASE stop going on about the goddamn fucking fee! This thread has grown 10 pages overnight, and every one of them is full of people moaning about the fee as if it's coming out of your own fucking pockets. SHUT THE FUCK UP!

It's the club's money. Rafa gets to spend it on who he things will improve us. THAT'S IT! There is nothing more to say on the matter, it's a large fee, fucking get over it. He's a good player who'll give us better options and is improving year on year. Just trust the boss of the club you support to do what he thinks is best. Is that too much to fucking ask?!?

I'm a bit slow.  Please help me catch up with the maths.

So we MIGHT be paying an UNCONFIRMED fee IN THE REGION OF £17m for Johnson.  APPARENTLY that will be broken down as £5m now, £5 million in installments and £7m WHICH MAY still be owed from the Crouch transfer.

So ASSUMING that our ENTIRELY CONFIRMED transfer budget is £20m that leaves us with EITHER £15m or £8m, or £3m to spend depending on how you perceive that sums owed for previous transfers and sums deferred on new transfers are being accounted for in that budget.

Which when all taken as a whole clearly means we can sign Silva and Villa on deferred instalments over the next five years and still have enough left over for a chip supper for Montse. Lovely.
I would say that structure wont be far off.  Allot of deals are paid in instalments including activating clauses if the given players meets a certain criteria.

If the seller says. "hey Rafa, this guy has bags of potential and will be first choice for England for the next x amount of years" Rafa will say, "OK ill give you x amount if he has x amount of starts etc. Little things like this can be clubbed together to make a maximum transfer fee of 17/18 mill once the player ticks the relevant boxes.  If we ship him on next year or the year after we may end up paying less.

I cant understand why some people are so negative about this signing. He brings pace to a defence which is generally lacking in it but most importantly he can attack.

The reason we lost the league last season was we could not break down certain teams. Most of those teams didnt even attempt to attack us in most of those games. We need a right back who is capable of more than just defending. Johnson can take players on, can shoot and can cross. Maybe his defending at times is suspect but the reality is more often than not he will be required to add something in attack.

Arbeloa was an absolute steal when we got him but he is limited in what he can do going forward. I hope we dont sell him as there are certain games you might feel he would be a safer option at the back (united, arse, chelsea). But virtually every other team will come to anfield and defend and thats where we need more attack minded options.

Kuyt is not going anywhere, so for me johnson is the perfect foil for kuyt limitations. Those two could be a match made in heaven. I honestly dont give a toss about the price as there is no guarantee with any player that he will perform or work out but on paper Johnson makes a lotta sense to me.

I understand your point... But do we REALLY need to spend 17 million on cover for Arbeloa, especially when we have Carra who can play in that position? I dont get it... The money could be spent elsewhere and help buy cover for Torres...which is better spent.
Between 1st and 2nd? You telling me that Johnssons inclusion over Arbeloa would have helped us get better results at home against the bottom half Clubs we drew to last Season? I doubt it.

Don't really rate Johnson myself but it'd be very naive to think the fee is that big, considering 5m is in addons and 7m is written off from the Crouch deal.

7m written off against the Crouch deal is still 7m, written off or not.  If we'd not written it off for Johnson (if that's whats happened), Pompey would have still owed it to us.

17m is a lot of money - money I suspect most people would rather see spent in other areas of the pitch.

If indeed it's £10m with the Crouch payments written off, then that's good business, so long as Arbeloa isn't going off in another direction. Ideally I'd like to keep the both of them.

Anyway, which country is Johnson's family originally from? If his name was Glenston John and he played for Trinidad his value'd be about £4m.

Consider also another £8m in for the probable sale of Arbeloa.

So that's EITHER £23m, £16m or £11m.

As for cover at RB, we've still got Degen who you never know, may actually be match fit one day - plus Carra and Darby too.

Would be a shame to see Arby go but Johnson is defo the way forward as attacking fullbacks go and we'd be making a profit on Arbeloa, too.

We wanted Rafa to be in control of transfers so we'd be able to compete for first choice signings. Here's one.

Suppose when we get first choice signings we lose our excuse that we were outbid or lack the money. At least this way we're making a fucking go of it.

Fee's high, but if Rafa's paying that then he obviously thinks it's justified. I bet a chunk of it would be tied to if we win the PL, and seeing as we only just finished 2nd, teams will be more likely to let us stick such clauses in. And if we do win the league then the £5m of the price we have to pay (for example) will be more than worth adding to the initial 12m (for example!).

Good attacking fullback- an athlete- decent defensively, and still fairly young. Should be a great buy and an improvement on Arby in time. Both of them in the squad gives us a couple of great options, and of course, it also means we don't need to play Carra/Skrtel at RB  ;)

A back 4 of Johnson, Agger, Carra and Aurelio would mean that for once we have a defence that looks capable of chipping in with a few important goals from open playas well as set pieces (possibly being very generous to Carra!). It's another factor that could make the difference between a draw and a win.

Regardless, I know that the unhappy ones won't change their opinions until the season starts (if at all) so I'm bowing out of this for now.

I don't care that he's costing us that much because of the fact they still owe us for crouch, if rafa and the other top clubs in this country think he's worth that then i'm inclined to agree. Arbeloa is good but is not the best attacking right back, which obviously is the system rafa wants to use, carragher will get the best out of him defensively also, definitely a case of in rafa we trust for me.
