btw...

Daranoza great email to Tim Vickery.

But Tim Vickery is but one guest on his radio show.

People should also send sensible emails to Graham Poll and Robbie Earle. They are on his show every week. Graham is touting his new upcoming book btw.

Again have your facts right about what Steven Cohen claims if you do. ( see my previous post)

The email was actually to Cohen himself. As expected, I got no reply. I tried to be totally objective but my emotions got the better of me in parts. Still, I did not resort to name calling. I feel I was fair. I feel that the majority of mail sent to him has been fair.

Sadly, I believe it will have no effect whatsoever.

I figure if I play it cool, and give him a bell in a couple days, I might get him to retract his comments publicly and issue an apology. No emotion, no anger, no insults, no yelling.

It's my own personal goal. See what happens.

That would be quite a goal. It would be worthy of a cake from Greggs, at least.

In the meantime, it would be advisable to do as has already been advised. Any emails sent, keep them civil, keep them 'uniform' and keep them factual. It's an emotionally raw topic and he truly has hit a few nerves but calling him the wanker that we might consider him to be lessens the points entirely.

good luck. I spent a lot of time talking to him last time he did this and tried to educate him - clearly I failed. He will keep bringing it back up because it draws attention to hiim and his shows. He is shallower than a drying puddle.

Don;t let it stop you trying though. Bet he hasn;t bothered reading Hillsborough - the truth, like I tried to get him to do last time.

Well done El Camp.. :wellin

Trevor.. the other guy on his show is Kenny Hassan and when they cut you off even though your phone call was above board, Kenny mentioned that Steven's future step kids have been threatend.

I am telling everyone, Steven uses the vitriol emails or phone calls to explain how "Liverpool" supporters are.

I have no idea if anyone has threatend his two future step daughters or not. But at no time should anyone do something so daft as to threaten him, his family or take issue with his religious faith. On the phone, in forums, or via emails.

Take the high road all the time.

Take the high road all the time.

That's something I try to do, not getting worked up. I always find it funny that Steve Cohen gets so frustrated and angry that he has to resort to shouting to get his point across. He did it yesterday with me, on the phone. He did it again on the radio today. Just shows he is weak and hasn't got a proper argument. Like 4pool said, don't threaten him and shit, just needle him with facts and watch his ego explode.

My email to Steve Cohen following a request to respond.

Dear Steven Cohen,

I have read some of your recent unsubstantiated allegations regarding 6 to 8,000 ticketless fans at Hillsborough and your comments conflating Heysel and Hillsborough. I have researched the Hillsborough disaster since late 1989, written two reports on the disaster and its aftermath, numerous articles and the book Hillsborough: The Truth. I attended the Taylor Inquiry, the Coroner's Inquests and the trial of the two senior officers. I also gave written evidence to the Stuart-Smith Scrutiny in 1998.I have read hundreds of statements including every single statement made by all police officers on duty on the day. I also interviewed many of those in authority at Hillsborough on the day including the senior South Yorkshire Police investigating officer. It was my work that uncovered the fact that all police statements had been 'reviewed and altered' by a team of six senior officers in collaboration with the South Yorkshire Police solicitors. The terms 'review' and 'alteration' are theirs not mine. The 'cover-up' and the deliberate transference of blame to the fans was orchestrated at a senior level in the SYP and involved briefings given to the media and to the Prime Minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher. The alteration of statements was known to the investigating police (West Midlands), Lord Justice Taylor, the Coroner and the Home Office.

Undoubtedly there were ticketless fans on the day, as there are at all matches, but there is nothing at all in any witness statements to suggest that their numbers were unusual. The build-up at the turnstiles was caused by the following: the 'corralling' (their word, not mine) of fans by the police and escorting them from coachparks and the railway station in the hour before kick-off; the failure to 'filter' the crowd into the known bottleneck at the turnstiles (I uncovered an internal SYP memo from a senior officer in the SYP written in 1986 warning of this very danger); malfunctioning turnstiles. As had happened previously at several other capacity matches, processing over 25,000 fans (North Stand; West Stand and Leppings Lane Terrace) through 27 old turnstiles in an area no bigger than a school playground was a serious danger. After a close call on the Leppings Lane Terrace at a semi-final in 1981 Hillsborough had been stood down as a venue.

What happened next on 15 April 1989 is well-known. The Match Commander opened the exit gate to relieve congestion outside and fans walked (I have all this on the CCTV tapes) down a 1 in 6 gradient tunnel into the back of two already overcrowded central pens. There was no opportunity to move sideways or onto the perimeter track. The ground had no up-to-date safety certificate and the police operational order for the day gave no details of emergency response. The Match Commander had full view of the pens from the control box at the end of the terrace yet he failed to close the tunnel, as had been done by his predecessor in 1988. He then lied to the Chief Exec of the FA that Liverpool fans had broken down the gate and caused an 'inrush'. This deceit was passed to the awaiting media as fans were dying in the pens ... it was also given to the Prime Minister the following day. According to correspondence wuith her press secretary, the PM was told that a 'mob, tanked up on drink' had caused the disaster.

Steven, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it is unacceptable to broadcast ill-informed opinion as fact when the evidence, amassed over years, has exposed your assertions as false. I feel that the least you might do is to retract.

Seconded. Well done Phil.

That is such a well written piece. Is it possible to also send it to Cohen's bosses at Fox Soocer Channel & Sirius? It may be that they also need educating regarding the truth, so they can be aware of the lies he has been spouting.

In light of such overwhelming evidence, do we think it likely he is going to retract? This is twenty years worth of disbelief and blame, after all, twenty years of bitterness and hatred that he's been spouting for as long as he has been on the air.

If we can turn this man, maybe there is hope, yet.

Steven Cohen Offers Liverpool Fans No Hillsborough Apology
by The Gaffer on April 21, 2009 · 40 comments

On Monday’s episode of the World Soccer Daily show, radio co-host Steven Cohen failed to apologize to Liverpool supporters regarding the inaccurate statements he made about their role in the Hillsborough Disaster that occurred on April 15, 1989.

The inaccurate statements made by Cohen on his April 13, 2009 episode of World Soccer Daily were that:

Ticketless Liverpool supporters were the root cause of the Hillsborough Disaster,
6-8,000 ticketless Liverpool supporters showed up outside Hillsborough, and
Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium was used week-in week-out without incident.

Instead of apologizing, he softened his April 13 stance on his belief that there were 6-8,000 ticketless Liverpool supporters outside the ground. During the April 20, 2009 episode, he first said “There were several thousand who showed up without tickets.” But a few minutes later, when co-host Kenny Hassan gave Cohen an opportunity to retract the 6-8,000 number, Cohen replied “If it’s not the right number, it’s not the point. If I’m wrong on the number, then I’ll retract it and apologize. If it’s 25, 2500 or 25,000, my point is made for me. There were people there who shouldn’t have been there because they didn’t have tickets and they were hell bent on getting in. I’m sorry, those are the facts.”

Cohen is barking up the wrong tree when he claims ticketless fans contributed to the disaster. They did not. According to The Hillsborough Football Disaster paper entitled Context and Consequences, page 17, “[Lord Justice] Taylor surmised there was no substance to the allegation that ticketless fans caused the Disaster.”

And while there may have been some ticketless supporters outside the ground — as there are at any major football game or sporting event — “I have already found that there was not an abnormally large number of fans without tickets on this occasion,” said Lord Taylor in his interim report. “With one or two exceptions, the police witnesses themselves did not subscribe to the ‘conspiracy’ theory (of a large number of late-arriving ticketless supporters).”

Cohen has seemingly changed his tune about Liverpool — from the extreme opinion on April 13 that the ticketless fans were the root cause of the Hillsborough Disaster to a twisted logic on April 20 that insists on Liverpool fans admitting that they were part responsible for the disaster because some ticketless fans were hell bent on getting inside the stadium.

According to a report from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), “it was unlikely that the terrace exceeded 10,124 and that total admissions were approximately equal to the designated capacity of 10,100 people.”

So even if there were as few as 24 ticketless supporters who were hell bent on getting into the Leppings Lane end, it would have been impossible for those fans — who were vastly outnumbered — to have an impact on the more than 3,000 fans who were inside the central pen.

“The point is if the people [without tickets] hadn’t been outside, this never [would have] happened,” said Cohen. “This is a stadium that had no problems prior to this particular day. That’s a fact.”

Except that it isn’t a fact. It’s inaccurate. As I reported in Monday’s the league Talk article, there had been several incidents at Hillsborough prior to April 15, 1989 — most notably a game in 1981 when 38 Spurs supporters suffered crush-related injuries in the same Leppings Lane stand.

It’s time for Steven Cohen to share the facts with us that he claims he has. It’s also time for Cohen to publicly retract his statement that there were 6-8,000 ticketless Liverpool supporters. And most importantly of all, he needs to retract his statement that Liverpool fans were responsible for the Hillsborough Disaster.

There’s no evidence to show that 24 supporters sneaking over the wall at Hillsborough were a factor in the death of the 96 Liverpool fans who died from crush-related injuries. But there are plenty of pieces of evidence that chronicle the list of mistakes that South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield Wednesday and the Football Association committed.

For Steven Cohen to not apologize on air and to carry on about the need for Liverpool to share the responsibility of what happened at Hillsborough is sickening. It’s time for Cohen to admit he was wrong, apologize to Liverpool fans and to read the Taylor Interim Report to better educate himself and his World Soccer Daily listeners.

If he doesn’t apologize to his radio listeners, I’m concerned that he may spread his misinformation about what caused the Hillsborough Disaster to the weekly Fox Football Fone-In TV show that he co-hosts on Fox Soccer Channel. Having a loose cannon like Cohen on live TV is a risk that Fox has to determine whether it’s worth taking.

the league Talk readers interested in learning more about Hillsborough as well as the chance to see TV footage and interviews should watch the excellent BBC Football Focus video from April 11, 2009 which was a special tribute to the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster.

I should note that Kartik Krishnaiyer, from our sister site Major League Soccer Talk, had an interview previously arranged with Cohen for this Thursday, so feel free to post your questions for Cohen there. The interview is a golden opportunity for Cohen to respond to direct questions from you about his opinions regarding what really happened at Hillsborough.

You can listen to the segment of the April 20 episode where Cohen discusses the the league Talk article below.

Now. tbf, this report is about mondays radio show and before Phil Scrantons email to Steven.

Let's see what his reaction is today because Steven should be under the microscope for his "opinion".

Nicely put Phil.

Claiming there were '6,000-8,000 ticketless fans' is factually incorrect. Therefore, the mistakes made leading to the deaths of the 96 were not by those that attended the game legally, but on the organizers and police forces who were tasked with crowd control.

Therefore, there is no 'shared responsibility'.

Given this is happening, it amazes me that no action has been taken against Cohen on their behalf. He must be blowing someone pretty high up.

Cool mate... I listen to the show live most of the time, and podcast it if I can't.

I don't listen to the show to hear what he has to say, more so to listen to the guests like Vickery, Robbie Earl, Massimo Lopez Pena etc.

I was tuned in yesterday when you called - I might do so to myself.

Brilliant article there, along with that superb email from Phil.
Justice for the 96.

Paul Tomkins mentions Cohen in one of his recent blogs:

Quote
However, having said all this, if I was to make a report about events of which I had no first-hand knowledge, I’d at least do some basic research into what took place. If I was quoting the official report, I’d make it my job to know what the thing said, not broadcast the wrong conclusion.

Steven Cohen, co-host of the World Soccer Daily radio show in the U.S., is another who has been propogating lies. Last week he claimed that Liverpool fans failed to take responsibility for Hillsborough, as well as stating that if 6,000-8,000 ticketless fans had not shown up, the disaster would never have happened.

Was he there? Did he read the official report? No, and clearly no.

His logic seems to be that because no other tragedy had occurred at the ground, it was the fault of Liverpool fans; never mind that plenty of Sheffield Wednesday supporters knew the risks at Leppings Lane, or that there were previous problems at the ground, albeit ones that didn’t lead to deaths.

Cohen is the apotheosis of ‘big gob’ broadcasters, who spout their mouths off for the sake of ‘colourful’ shows, never minding the fact that they are totally ignorant.

These people wouldn’t be so glib if the same things happened to them: gross inacuracies about their personal lives smeared across other news media, from which they would struggle to recover; lies that blackened their names, and ruined their reputations.

Then again, some such people don’t have much of a reputation to lose in the first place.

After all, sewer rats aren’t too bothered by shit.

Actually, there *was* a death at Hillsborough in a crush before 1989. It was in the 1930s - the poor bloke's name escapes me - if KiNki is reading this thread, she can add more.......

Otherwise, bloody good piece that - exactly what we needed - other writers showing Cohen up and embarrassing him :thumbup

Listening to the show now......

Cohen has invited the author from EPL Talk to ring in the show.

Cohen just called the author a disgrace to the 96 and to the human race!

Unbelievable!
He doesn't want to be compared to the King.

I'm not able to get through. Seems they have stopped taking calls from my number. I'll wait for my roommate to come so that I can use his phone to call him up.

Is his show on?

I just had Sirius on for 10 minutes coming back to work and they had Five Live going. This should be the first hour of the show.

Further it is real slow getting onto his shows messageboards.

Edit: nevermind they moved to channel 126 for today only instead of 124, just called the number above and that's what they told me.

I called them up and told them who I was. The lad who takes the call remembered me from yesterday and told me I pissed off Cohen a lot and that Cohen didn't want to take my calls anymore. But I told him I wanted to talked about yesterday's game so he shouldn't worry. I will stick to my word, try to build a reputation with the guys running the show. And then I'll call them again in a couple of days to ask Cohen questions. Hence, I would someone else to take it up with him today.

Also, he asked me why my number was blocked. I told him it was a private number. They really want my number. But they're not getting it.

Wow did you call in? Because I didn't hear your call!

Right now, the best thing to do is keep track of what he says about the subject. Document it and post in here.

I wouldn't worry about getting on the show. The more callers who are Liverpool supporters who talk about the match or general stuff makes it seem as though he has a lot of Liverpool supporters listening. We need to have no LFC callers about other subjects.

He has in the past tried to stoke Liverpool fans to call the show about the CL or v Man utd, etc. Don't. Ignore his show. Then we can report to Sirius or FSC his show is being boycotted with some authority.
