Surprised by this to be honest. Although then again Ferguson's massive ego and belief he is bigger than the team always allowed the possibility of this occurring.

The careers of the Rangers pair Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor appear to be hanging in the balance after both players were today sent home from training by the Glasgow club and Ferguson stripped of the Rangers captaincy.

Ferguson and McGregor were disciplined by Rangers as punishment for being photographed appearing to make the V- sign during Scotland's victory over Iceland on Wednesday night. Both players had been dropped to the bench for the World Cup qualifier by manager George Burley after taking part in a late-night drinking session following Saturday night's defeat in Holland.

Ferguson, who is captain for both his club and country, and McGregor, who was selected ahead of Craig Gordon for the Holland match, have also been summoned to a meeting with the Rangers chief executive Martin Bain this afternoon.

The club will issue a statement after that meeting, which is expected to finish at around 4pm, and it is understood Rangers will look to inflict the maximum punishment on both players of a two-week fine and ban. The Guardian also understands that they will be sold in the summer.

The Scottish Football Association is also due to release a statement later this afternoon, in which it is expected to declare that neither player will be considered for future international selection.

Walter Smith, the Rangers manager, today refused to speculate on the outcome of the meeting but did confirm that the disciplinary action taken today was for the alleged V-signs rather than the drinking controversy.

"We were unhappy about that situation [the drinking incident] but that was something for George to act on," said Smith. "The more disappointing aspect for us was the subsequent action on the bench on Wednesday night. From the club's point of view, that was not a good image to project."

Suffered from a serious injury but still played relatively well. Became captain as well before wanting to return to Scotland and Rangers.

Gets even more interesting due to the fact that they have been suspended for 2 weeks without pay - Breaking news on SSN. The SFA have also confirmed that they will not be considering the two players for International selection.

A bit hypocritical considering Scotland don't have a game until August, by which the matter could have been resolved.

I cannot see Rangers hauling Celtic in for the Scottish title.

More to this than what meets the eye, that's for sure.

Alot of them were up drinking until all hours but the fact tha Ferguson and McGregor have been severly punished is quite telling. I also know that Ferguson was sick all over the bar and McGregor got an employees number and that Scott Brown ended up buying their drinks as they were so pissed

Why has Brown no tbeen punished in the same way?
I'd love to know what else went on.
