Yeah been on courses for it too - Interview skills, not had much luck with getting interviews of late which could be down to how long I've been out of work. Get rejected by Apprenticeships due to being over 18 despite the tag 18-24.

But you have been on loads of interviews this past year haven't you?

If you weren't getting interviews in the first place that would be more worrying.

Wake up, will ya pal? If you're not inside, you're outside, OK? And I'm not talking a $400,000 a year working Wall Street stiff flying first class and being comfortable, I'm talking about liquid. Thought I'd finally got an interview this week. One of my friend's exs works in the HR department of big lawyer firm. She sent me a job application that had only been seen by people working within the company. I heard only 1 other person had applied and the closing date was only 4-5 days down the line. Then a few days later I got a phone call to say there would be a group assessment with role play and 'bonding' on the day. My heart sank as I knew it would be some ridiculous morning/afternoon of pretending to get along with random strangers to impress the people assessing us.

I turned up today to find there was now over 20 people trying to get 2 jobs (everyone there had been put forward via their agencies) and we'd find out by the end of the day. We wouldn't even get interviewed unless we past 3 different stages and by that point I'd given up. I did okay on the actual assesment but probably let myself down by being too quiet in the group scenario business so I didn't get close.

Most the people who were there had impressive backgrounds and I felt like the odd man out. The job itself was around 19-22k a year which is way above what I've ever earned (mostly minimum wage)

Good experience though, and it shows people care and are trying to help  8)

I have estimated that from June 1st 2011 - June 1st 2012, I have had around 38 interviews with 33 different companies. But when you consider on Average I applied for between 10-15 jobs a day, it pails in comparison :/

Bit off topic, and there's no excuse to treat any one like shit, but you'd be surprised how shit the public treat job centre staff. They get threatened and assaulted frequently.

Every single one I've ever come across has been unhelpful, most of them looked at you like you were a waste of space and not one of them ever helped me find work.

A couple in Birkenhead Brunswick House were very helpful, in fact most were. So not ALL of them. Like in all walks of life there's gonna be those that are twats and those who aren't. Admittedly I did prompt them a little bit for help; like asking what jobs, training etc was available. Showing them my diary and getting into discussion of the jobs I'd gone for, but my experience was a good one, one or two twats but the vast majority were very helpful i found.

Most in our local jobby are quite pleasant and where necessary help you get the odd funny one but most are actually quite dignified and respectful. Could just be this area though.

Think for every 9 jumped up pricks at the job centre there is usually 1 decent one (who then disappear after a while).  The security they employ are usually without exception knobheads.

Tip - if you apply for a job that has certain requirements but you don't have those requirements, at least make some effort to get a bit of knowledge on that subject. Five people interviewed so far, evidently not one of them actually wanted the job. ::)

Had to sign back on last Monday, actually phoned them the Friday before to go through my application for JSA, got a call an hour before my 1st appointment asking for evidence of who paid my student fee's and a letter from the Uni to confirm I was there, an HOUR ?
Fucking dicks.
So I went in, the woman reiterated the need for them and I said well giving me an hours notice was out of order, plus if I provide evidence of who paid my student fee's surely thats evidence that I was in University ?
Of course it is, but not with the Job centre. They always make it more difficult than it has to be, all they have to do is ring the local council to confirm the details they require. But no, it has to be more difficult and time consuming. c*nts.
She even said 'They did tell you about the evidence required when you originally made the application ' I was like 'With all due respect, you were not present during my application were you?' , 'No' she said,
So I said 'Then Please do not tell me what they did or didnt say to me on the phone during the application'.

Luckily for me 2 days later I was offered a job after attending an interview the day after, I havent told them yet, I wont either until the very last minute.
My signing time is 14:43 ? ? Random.

Agree with this wholeheartedly but that is of course no excuse for tarring all with the same brush, but yeh some of the idiots that were there last week when i went in were out of order.

Told myself tomorrow I'm going to sit down and send loads of CV's off online.

I'm nearly an English graduate with an expected 2:1, currently work part time a few days a week, looking for anything where writing is involved like proof reading, editorial, writing advertisements etc. Would also do Admin work just for a bit of money.

Any useful sites I should start with tomorrow?

I qualify for a few reasons under the Guaranteed Interview Scheme so figured I'd finally use it to my advantage.  I met all the criteria (and then some) for the role I applied for with an employer that uses the GIS... and what do you know, no interview.  I could probably get an interview if I appeal but then what's the point I won't get the job will I?!

Whats the Guaranteed Interview Scheme mate ?

Basically if you have a disability that impairs your day to day functioning (can be physical or mental) then you can get a guaranteed interview as long as you pass the entry requirements for the job.  Well that is what is supposed to happen anyway.  Some stuff about it on here:

if you can proofread and you just need something to ease the cashflow go and stick some posters up at a local uni advertising your services as a proofreader for academic work.  it can be dull work but you make your own hours.  i paid my way through uni doing just that (no debt!).

at this rate i'll probably be doing it again before long...

Looks to me like the more degrees, a-levels etc you get, the harder it is to get a job, by the time you finish your studies , other have already worked their way up into a job. Bit backwards really.

Just went on Sky careers out of interest and all of them say 'previous experience essential'. The only things graudates can do at big companies like that is be unpaid for 6 months or be treated like a child. My mate recently finished uni and started a 2 week placement at Liverpool Echo, he thought it would be great experience but on his first day they left him to do nothing for hours and basically neglected him so he left. It was also unpaid of course.

I'm sorry but it's just not realistic to expect thousands of graduates who are in debt and have been in education for the best part of 20 years to come out and then work unpaid for months to a year, regardless of what it might lead to. If you work in life then you should be paid for it, you aren't doing it for fun.

I've been actively applying for jobs for the past year or so now... and I've been keeping an eye out for a lot longer than that though. I am working at the moment but it's only part time, so struggling to really make any money that doesn't go straight back out. Where I live there just aren't opportunities and the positions advertised are all for part time. Working my way up through the ranks where I am now seems difficult too with promotion opportunities very rare in my area and the option or moving is out of the question and travel is limited as I don't own a car. I'm applying for jobs that I am qualified for, and I know if I get an interview, then I usually do quite well in them. I have had 3 interviews that I have been offered the job, but again, they're only part time. I'm just struggling to even be considered for anything at the moment, not suprisingly when each position has about 100+ applicants. I just feel like I'm in a bit of a mess and struggling to get out to be honest, the only thing that is keeping me sane is that I know people are in a lot worse situations than me. At then end of the day though, you've got to be selfish and think about yourself.

Maybe he could have wasted another week or two doing nothing and being treated like a 16 year old on work experience but he's chosen to go back to work for his dad where he's challenged a bit and earns good money. Was just an example of how students and young people are taken advantage of. 'Work Experience' often sounds good but if it's really work experience then why not get paid for it? Maybe I'm wrong but most people work for money, that's even their only incentive sometimes.

Can I just say, Never burn bridges....you never know when someone could pop-up in your job search....

I had an interview Monday which was 2 hours long. First hour was with the Director of Communications who will be leaving the position but be part-time as needed. I spoke with her for an hour.

2nd hour I spent with the COO of the organization, as she was reviewing my resume, she asks "Do you know 'X'?" who was the former Project Director. I say yes, and that we had a good relationship. She continues stating that she was her coworker for over 10 years and they are very good friends. The hour turned into 1.5 hours as we kept talking. Looking at my resume there was nothing negative that she said, the only thing she mentioned is that I would need HR training as I would have a subordinate. But I was also thinking that no-matter the circumstance they would want me to train in the methods of management anyways.

Overall I think it went pretty well and if my former Project Director puts in a decent word then I think that might move to the front part of the list.

I'll also be starting my job as a contracts specialist the first week of July. Its not what I want to do, but its a job at this point and I need one. It will also be good to get back into a routing.
