Wow, just hope no further lives are lost in addition to the ones already. RIP to the 6 policemen who have died according to some reports. Several of the players have been shot according to one witness, but only one or two seriously.

This is terrible. What can be said?

It doesnt matter that this was the Sri Lankan cricket team, the fact is innocent people are dead and wounded and for what reason?

Reports from the Sydney Morning Herald say that two men were running across the street shooting indiscriminatly. What can possibly be done to stop these things from happening?

RIP the policemen who died, hope the Sri Lankan cricketers aren't too seriously injured.

Futher proof that Pakistan is definitely not a safe environment for tourists, let alone cricketers.
You have posted literally nothing of substance to flame about.  Your "points", and I dread to call them that, were superficial and completely arbitrary.  Nothing you said could be argued against because nothing you said elaborated a position of any kind.

Fucking awful!! I mean, what have the sri lankan players done to offend terrorists. Its not like they have a grudge against Sri Lanka. Truly horrible and despicable act. No wonder no teams wanted to tour pakistan before this. I can't see Pakistan hosting another tournament for a fair few years.

Just a possibility but it could have been the Tamil tigers in a planned and coordinated attack. I heard the conflict between them and the Sri Lankan army has been on the verge of exploding in the past few weeks.

Samarweera was hit in the chest. All injuries were minor, according to CNN.

6 policeman dead. My thoughts to their poor families.

Just a possibility but it could have been the Tamil tigers in a planned and coordinated attack.

Come out now on CNN that no players were shot. All just from debri and 8 sustained minor injuries.

Nonetheless, I cannot see any cricketing country travel over there.

From Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror:

Four discharged, Thilan receiving treatment

Four of the five injured Lankan player were discharged from hospital. Thilan Samaraweera is still receiving treatment for a thigh injury, Minister Gamini Lokuge told parliament moments ago. He also said that the shooting took place at around 9am when the cricket team were getting off the bus. He said that the Sri Lankan government condemned the attack on the national cricket team

Well Pakistan is already scheduled to play one-dayers and T20 matches in Dubai

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/other_international/pakistan/7635284.stm

(extract, dated 25.08.09)

The Pakistan Cricket Board has signed a three-year agreement to play its home one-day internationals and Twenty20 matches at the new Dubai Sports City.

To think that the Sri Lankan cricket team was in Lahore to stand by Pakistan as Pakistan had done when Sri Lanka faced it's own terrorist troubles.

Horrible story RIP those lives lost and fingers crossed for those that hang in the balance.

Possibly straying a bit off topic here; but it's about fucking time Pakistan, and the Pakistani government sorted itself right out....

For years we've known it's a home away from home for terrorists....and as much as this story is terrible, it doesn't come as a suprise at all. Pakistan have a got a police force that is massively under funded and under resourced facing an elusive and ever changing enemy there is only going to be one winner.

You've got to wonder what is going on, Police resigning everyday for fear that terrorists will target them:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28057057/

'They went straight to the local Urdu-language newspaper to announce their resignation

"They just want to get the word out to the Taliban that they are not with the police anymore so they won't kill them," said Iqbal. "They know that no one can protect them, and especially not their fellow policemen."'

RIP to the policemen, and I'm glad none of the cricketers were seriously hurt.

Looks like the end of international cricket in Pakistan for a long time now. No way will England, Australia, South Africa, India etc consider touring there for a good while, and its unlikely Sri Lanka or Bangladesh will now.

For the next 5 years at least would be my guess. The situation in Pakistan seems to be getting worse with more Taliban control gripping the country. Can't really see any team going there till the bastards have been obliterated completely (and God only knows how long that will take ~ probably never).

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. RIP policemen

Cricketers should in theory be safer because of the massive security presence around them. This is probably one reason no cricketers died today, only the brave policemen protecting them.

The country is in shambles though and it doesn't look to getting any better.

Sounds very similar to the kind of attacks used in India a few months back. Probably nothing to do with the Sri Lankans, just a big warning to those Muslims within Pakistan who want to try and move away from all this fundamentalist shit, and live a normal trouble free life. Unfortunately the Sri Lankans were the ideal target for them to make their point.

Seems that the fundamentalists seem to be increasing their power and footing. Very worrying times for their country. Was thinking of visiting it next year, as there are plenty of Sikh places of interest and heritage there from the pre-partition days....when Sikhs, Hindus, Christians and Muslims lived in Punjab without next to no trouble. Think I will give it a swerve now!

First test series for Pakistan in over a year, and now I can't see any team wanting to go there for years to come.

RIP those killed.
"...British people are highly indebted and obliged to Sikhs for a long time. I know that within this century we needed their help twice and they did help us very well. I'd say I'm shocked, but to be honest I'm not....I think it was inevitable that at some point the cricketers themselves were going to become targets.  Glad that none of the players or officials were seriously hurt, but my sympathies are with the families of the policemen and bus driver killed.

I know any terrorist attrocity is shocking but feels even more so when there are sports people involved for some reason. Truly frightening stuff.

I know it's academic in the grander scheme of things but I guess Pakistan will be playing a lot of their tests elsewhere in the future - maybe in England?

The Pakistani mindset on this thing is quite clear and really saddens me.

I've been interested in the Pakistan situation for a while, as those who've seen my post in the other thread will know.

Any time an atrocity like this occurs they immediately blame India, RAW (India's intelligence agency), Israel, Mossad, America, The CIA, MI5, Britain or anyone else. A lot of Pakistani's still will swear blind the mumbai attacks were carried out by India in a false flag operation.

The sad truth of the matter is, they just won't confront the possibility that most of these atrocities are carried out by their fellow countrymen. A large proportion of them are still convinced that the Taliban are their real friends.

Anyway RIP to the poor policemen involved, brave men who died at their posts doing their job.
I'm really hoping Sturridge busts out the wacky dip when he scores.
