Why play Dossena in a derby when Fabio needs the match fitness?

Why drop Keane but play the equally-as-abysmal-on-Monday Kuyt?

Would have liked to see Riera at LW and Babel at RW, Gerrard and Torres upfront. Worth experimenting with for 60 mins at least I'd have thought. Oh well, I'm sure we'll win today though.

Also, Agger absence duly noted. I understand he apparently had a calf strain last week, but no confirmation or news since is not exactly reassuring.

Worth experimenting with

probs the reason why there.... Rafa doesnt want to experiment.  Kuyt was good on Monday and him being taken off led to Anichebe being played down the left, causing Carra all kinds of problems.

He needs players who are going to put the effort in today, an F.A Cup derby, Babel is NOT that player.  Keane was completely kept out of the game on Monday so to start him again would be very strange.

I agree with the lineup (if that is what it is...).  Everton are not the fastest side, but they are strong.  Dossena is not the fastest defender we have but he is big and stong and should be able to look after Anichebe.

On the other hand, this midfield + attack is what we used with such success in the 2nd half of last season.

Fair enough I guess. Accept he can't play two games in a week, but thought six days would be sufficient. Let's hope/pray the Italian can put in a performance the likes of which we saw from Insua before he left.

That may well be the case, but I'd guess that we practise and prepare for the game a couple of days in advance. Means we'll try the combinations that we'll use in the game. So if you know what's been going on in training sessions, you can have a very good guess of what the team is going to be.

True, but that was primarily down to the Gerrard-Torres partnership than anything peripheral. Here's hoping they're both on fire today.

It's most likely the 4-2-3-1 we used last season, but 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-1-1 are basically the same.

I hope Dossena has had adequate time to get himself up to fitness, to perhaps lose a bit more weight and to sort out his confidence. If he has a good game today it will be good for him. Probably good to give Fabio a rest as well as we have a few big games coming up and I wouldn't like to rely on Dossena for those should his calf give out again.

Doesn't Kuyt EVER get a rest?

God, I hope this turns out okay. I'd hate to go into work tomorrow on the back of an Everton win, being the only Red in the office (as opposed to the only gay in the village!)

I think it's more a case of playing a cup derby match, rather than thinking about the cup. It's more important to beat that lot than to progress to the next round.

Few would have contested the team selection prior to the last game.
It doesn't matter who's playing where and who you think should be playing.
If you are there today just back whoever has the shirt.

Thought Reina would have missed out ?

Pepe Reina has no problem with Diego Cavalieri playing in goal for Liverpool's FA Cup tie with Everton.

He told liverpoolfc.tv: "I would like to play - I would be lying if I didn't say that - but I think Diego deserves it. I have a lot of respect for what he is doing.

"Diego played a great game against Preston in the last round of the FA Cup.

"It is not easy when you are not playing regularly, but he works really hard and is a great professional."

Would have liked to see Riera at LW and Babel at RW, Gerrard and Torres upfront. Worth experimenting with for 60 mins at least I'd have thought. Oh well, I'm sure we'll win today though.

Don't think that'll happen much if at all because it puts too many of our eggs in one basket.

No viable left-sided wide option for the bench if you do that and no way to stretch the game second half.

Eggs in one basket? You do realise that's a metaphor for being one-dimensional, lacking in options don't you? Which is exactly what we've been playing like for the last few weeks or more. Same with stretching the game. If anything we've been 'contracting'.

Still, I can see a strong performance and comfortable win for us today, just hope we can use it as a marker and push on from there in the league for the next couple of months or more.

You know what I mean; if we go 2-1 up with that team last 30 minutes with two knackered wingers is going to result in us giving the ball away even more than usual.  The Rafa move straight from the Sacchi handbook is the wide player on one side last 25 mins to protect the lead - the spate of Benayoun / Babel substitutions at the end of last season for example.  It's pretty irrelevant whether we've been doing that already and it's not worked.

I think as a squad we are too one-dimensional still - but only because some of our players aren't pulling their weight.
