That OBThingy is beautiful. :)

How come old world and new world tarantulas are that different? Or is it just because spiders are that old, there's been plenty of time for evolution?

I am not an evolutionary biologist, I am a geneticist so I won't act like I understand or completely accept the evolutionary theory. But it seems like all Theraposids share a common ancestor somewhere in Africa. The ones that were isolated in America gained the uricating hair advantage after the land masses were separated.

Drama Queen (She tried killing me while lying on her back. :D) :

After this she just vacated her cage and I chased her around the room for about 5 minutes :D. Fun...

Care to explain that a bit more? ;)

Cheers, it was probably just sloppy speaking on my behalf - I'm not a biologist at all!  Just find it interesting that the defense mechanisms can be so different.

Gala, you are fucking mental, mate. I dont mind snakes, but i hate spiders. the ones that appear in my bathroom from time to time are scary enough, some of yours would give me a bloody heart attack i reckon!
But all in all, this is probably the most interesting off topic thread on RAWK. Keep it up mate  ;)

Ouch. Couldn't have been a nice way to go that. How long would that type of bite take to induce a heart attack GS?

It's surprising, but this is the first time I've delved in this thread and I have to say that I'm amazed by the sheer effort and dedication Gala has for his pets.

I acknowledge that arachnids may not be everyone's cup of tea but I find them pretty much enthralling.

So keep up the good work. And I look forward to the update when the spiderlings hatch.

Hey guys,

It`s nice that somebody`s demise makes you remember me ;). I almost had the same fate with the guy as my regular readers know so I can relate. I dodged the bullet but King Cobra venom is much tougher of course. The sheer amount of venom is hard to deal with and on top of that, it is very potent.

Ouch. Couldn't have been a nice way to go that. How long would that type of bite take to induce a heart attack GS?

Normally snake bites don`t induce heart attacks. I bet the guy had the heart attack due to fear of death, sick irony at play. It was very scary getting bitten and it can very well induce a heart attack if you have a heart condition. King Cobra neurotoxins will eventually stop your diaphragm muscle and you will die of asphyxiation. The time depends on the size of the person, amount of the venom etc. but it will take less than half an hour for sure. Antivenin must be administered immediately. Very though situation, you need to get so much antivenin (which is made from horse blood serum), the risk of anaphylactic shock increases significantly.

Gala, you are fucking mental, mate. I dont mind snakes, but i hate spiders. the ones that appear in my bathroom from time to time are scary enough, some of yours would give me a bloody heart attack i reckon!

Some people have a hard time to understand this hobby but I really love my animals, hence the amount of time and money I spend on them. I mean look at the colors of Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica:

Incredible! Unfortunately this is a critically endangered species and the one I have is one of a few thousand that are still alive. One day we won`t have any of these and it is a shame really.

As for the spiderlings, the momma spider should build the egg sack real soon. I am expecting egg laying within a week.

There has been a series of small storms here in Switzerland in the last few days. A lot of pressure changes. My C.marshalli decided to lay her eggs just before a storm and pressure changes freaked her out. She ended up eating her egg sack...

Well...though luck...

Here is my beautiful girl eating. I just fed her and could not resist taking a picture as she was posing great.

The first picture is with the flash:

The second picture under natural light, check out the blue!:

Unfortunately I am downsizing my collection to 4 spiders (planning to get some non-venomous snakes instead) and she will have to go as well. What a shame...

I admire your taste. I nearly bought one years ago but had a trio of common boas and no space. I'm going to the IHS show in Sept and there's usually one or two there as its the week after Hamm.

Pygmy Chameleon update, both doing well although male hasseling the female a bit so she spends less time on the ground. Just need to keep an eye on her to make sure she's feeding. I may add another female to give her a break! Amorous male chasing female in background below.

Ok.

1st successful breeding result with Tarantulas, Pterinochilus murinus laid an egg sack a month ago and I opened it yesterday.

First for background info, here are the parents side by side:

While they are doing it:

Here is the video of the exciting egg sack stealing adventure:

And here are the 160!!! babies (20 are sold already, 140 to go):

You gotta wait 'till they grow a bit for sexing. Then using a dissecting microscope you can sex them looking at their molted exoskeleton.

Females sell better ofcourse if you wait and sex them as females live up to 15 years and most males die at around 1-3 depending on the species.

There are people who buy these cheap from breeders and sell them individually on websites to other hobbyist with added profit. So far I have an order for 20 and another potential order for 100. If that goes through, I won't need to take care of 150+ individual tarantulas for long ;).

Right now @1st instar they are still absorbing yolk. Normally (If i havent removed them myself) they remain on their mothers web at this stage and they are not under any risk from their mother (their father was eaten by mommy months ago). When they molt into the second instar, the scatter away from their mother and siblings. Actually the ones that molt early can actually start eating their (still 1st instar) siblings. At second instar, they start eating small bugs. I will feed them baby crickets and meal worms.

Panthers are awesome, do you know what locale it comes from?

Here is a couple more pictures of my girl without flash:

She is absolutely brilliant, very docile and easy to handle! Not so common with GTPs.

I have only kept for tarantulas including my Monocentropus balfouri pair. And I tried breeding them the other day and boom:

These things sell like 50£ a baby so I am very very excited.

And the P.murinus babies are doing fine as well. All is good in crazyville :).

Great :).

Blues are amazing looking but I like reds more for obvious reason ;). Ambilobes kinda combine both.

I have a pet show owner buddy that has a couple young males that should turn out to be awesome but I just can not deal with daily interactions with feeder insects. Even weekly feedings bother me, that's why I have traded most of my Tarantulas for the GTP.

Still watching these feed is awesome so I go to the guy's shop once in a while ;).
