Ecuared - you don't think an upset is possible at all between LDU and the Mancs?
Honestly... no. And I hate to say that. OK, itīs possible, yes, because in football you never know, stranger things can happen. If you told me Greece would win the Euroīs and Liverpool would win the CL back in May 2004 I would have laughed in youīre face. But realistically I donīt see it happening.
If Liga still had Joffre Guerron and Enrique Vera I would have higher hopes for an upset, those guys were key members during their Libertadores run. Vera was the engine in midfield and Guerron provided so much dynamism and the perfect outlet on the counter. Guerron was replaced by Neicer Reasco, a veteran of the seleccion
and a good player, but an older, slower replacement. Vera, also a key member of the Paraguayan national team was never replaced. His midfield partner Patricio Urrutia was kept for this tournament, but unfortunately he gets overwhelmed without Vera at his side doing the dirty work (think Xabi without Masch) and had a stinker against Pachuca.
Luis Bolaņos and Damian Manso will be the main threats against the Mancīs, and both are good players, but if Iīm completely honest theyīre nothing special, and Rio and Vidic should be able to handle any threat they pose. Bolaņos could cause problems if he gets in behind the full-back, from what I have seen from Rafael heīs not a great defender so letīs hope Bolaņos can cause him some troubles and maybe win a free kick or two. Claudio Bieler is an honest, hardworking center-forward, but not the type who can create chances for himself, if a chance falls to him he is actually a pretty composed finisher.
Anyways, on paper itīs a classic David vs. Goliath match up. For every good player Liga has, the Mancīs have a superstar. This competition has a history of South American upsets, so letīs wait and see what happens.
Congrats to Liga. I bet the country will be anxiously watching the final.
Yeah, regardless of the outcome this is great for Ecuadorean football, and a nice distraction from everyday problems.
Another positive is that Liga is a club that goes about things the right way, so them becoming the countries model club can only be a good thing. They were under huge pressure to sack the manager Edguardo Bauza just a few months into his tenure. They went against the masses and had faith in him, and their long-term plan, and the rest, as they say is history.
