Maradona Visits Melwood
« on: November 7, 2008, 03:56:19 pm »
Probably deserving of its own thread i think. :)

New Argentina boss Diego Maradona visited Melwood this afternoon for talks with Rafa Benitez and Javier Mascherano
The trio discussed Mascherano's role for his country under the new regime - but only after Gerrard and co clamoured to shake Maradona's hand.

Benitez said: "It was difficult for me to see him because all our players were very excited about him being here.

"Two of our 'stars' came over and got his autograph. Then after, another 15 players came in saying they wanted to have a photo with him. But he was very good, nice and patient with everyone, so it was a very good experience.

"There was Gerrard, Carra, Keane, Alonso - his father played with Maradona when he was with Barcelona. Then Pepe Reina and also some young players. You could see Insua, Spearing, Flynn - all sorts of players."

The boss added: "We had a meeting to talk about the future of Mascherano with the national team and a few ideas.

"It was a very positive meeting."

One of the items sure to have been discussed was the possibility of Mascherano taking the captain's armband for his country.

Maradona has made no secret of his desire to make the Liverpool man his skipper, while Mascherano admits it would be 'an honour' to lead his nation.

However, no official announcement has yet been made.

Benitez added: "They will now meet again with Javier and it will depend on him.

"He has a fantastic mentality, a strong character and he's a good professional. If he wants he can be a fantastic captain."

:)

I think despite me being English and hating him for what he did in the Quarter Finals of Mexico '86 (although let's face it more or less everyone now has acknowledged that the other thing he did in that game was probably the finest goal ever scored) I think this is a wonderful thing.

And the fact that our lads all got excited to see him!  "2 of our stars".  That'd be Gerrard definitely... him and his shirt collecting thing... he probably got him to sign one!   Haha fair play to 'em.  :D

The way Agger has 'allegedly' serviced one or two females around Liverpool I doubt there is much Maradona could pass on to him.

I know this shouldn't annoy me, but it does - the media (Sky, the Beeb web-site/ Radio 1) are all carrying a story about Maradona visiting ManU's training ground.. but no mention of him visiting Melwood..

'big deal' you might say. and yeah, it isn't really a big deal, but for some inexplicable reason it irks me..

Always fun to read about players still being in awe of their idols! The idea of these guys tripping over themselves the way I would if I were to meet one of them seems to make them more human and more accessible in a way.

I can only imagine how exciting it must have been  for some of our players to meet Maradona.  Funny to see that they themselves flocked to try and get an autograph of the man just like many people flock to them.

And I hope Masch becomes Argentina captain.  I think it will make him better as a player and I think that there is a chance that he may even have an occasional foray up field during games which will improve his overall game.  I believe Masch has a fair bit of footballing ability and if he can just keep his head in the final third, he may even score some vital goals.  Not his game at all I know and I have huge manlove for him but I think this could happen if he becomes captain.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Yup, Maradona inspires people even now! Sad what happened to him towards the end, hope he was able to exit the scene in a more dignified manner ala Cruyff, Beckenbaur, Pele.. but that would not make him Maradona then. Also it was such a nice coincidence, Maradona is officially appointed Argentine manager the same day Obama wins the White House. Change is coming.. hopefully for the better!

Please someone put up the pics on here when it becomes available!

I think thats part of the appeal - he was much more rock'n'roll than the others you mentioned & still managed to play better
