Ian Callaghan - exclusive interview
« on: October 22, 2008, 10:56:26 AM »
*We rely on the forums of the best LFC sites on the Net (with their prior permission) to promote our articles.*

We recently did a series of exclusive interviews with Liverpool legends for my website LFChistory.net.

First up is Liverpool's record appearance holder, Ian Callaghan.

Besides his record of 857 games! he was the first Liverpool player to be chosen Footballer of the year in 1974, the only player who played in Liverpool's first European game in Reykjavik in 1964, who won the European Cup in 1977, and a record gap of 11 years seperated his 2nd and 3rd international cap for England when he made his long awaited return at 35 years of age. So a truly monumental player.

Hope you enjoy... next week we'll publish an interview with the tough-tackling legend... Gerry Byrne, who hardly does any interviews, but Callaghan persuaded him to talk to us.

Great interview. I really enjoyed that.

Cally epitomises what this club is all about.

Hugely successful but utterly humble.

Thanks for posting this - great site too, has helped me settle quite a few arguments.

Great interview. I really enjoyed that.

Cally epitomises what this club is all about.

Hugely successful but utterly humble.

The quotes from shanks in the interview sum him up well:

"He is a model professional, and a model human being. If there were 11 Callaghans at Anfield there would never be any need to put up a team sheet. He typifies everything that is good in football, and he has never changed. You could stake your life on Ian."

Shanks was dremaing of a team of Callaghans back in the day. :)

Thanks for that, it was great. Interestingly enough, whenever people put together an all time LFC XI Cally hardly ever gets a mention.

Lovely interview. Before my time but Ian obviously was central to both Shanks & Paisley's teams...857 games is unbelievable and I just love the fact he took the bus to / from Anfield on his debut day. Probably had just the bus fare in his pocket. Never knew he played for Cork City..home club...but comes across as a pure gent.

I was at his daughter's wedding a few weeks back, and he is one of the nicest fellas you could ever meet. A true gent and an absolute legend! Somehow, I just cant picture Gerrard getting the 48 down from Formby to the match, but only cos it's always 20 minutes late!! Just looking at the picture of his testimonial, its quite obvious what we're lacking at the moment in the team - facial hair!  :)

Thanks for that, it was great. Interestingly enough, whenever people put together an all time LFC XI Cally hardly ever gets a mention.

I guess as most ppl here were not able to watch him play. For example if RAWK is still alive and kicking in 20 years time, many people would not have heard of John Barnes. The might put Antonio Nunez and John Arne Riise in their best ever LFC team.
The second is that we travel to Fergusons office before the season start and let him set up everything. So we can take it from there.

"Everything I did was right. When I hit a bad ball it went to a Liverpool shirt. They actually clapped me off the field, the referee and the players. It was quite an unbelievable occasion. I went on the bus when I made by debut. It wasn't many cars in them days. People didn't have cars. I thought I was giving me plenty of time but when I got to the bus-stop, they were queuing at the bus-stop to go the match. They all knew who I was as it was in my neighbourhood. Several of them said: 'Let Cally get on the bus, he's playing.' I went at the front of the bus and got on the bus. I got off at the ground, played and got the bus home."

What an amazing experience that would have been...getting clapped by both teams and the referee for having such a good game\debut.....

....Never in a million years could I see that happening now!!

Great interview btw...
