A Steven Gerrard goal in a European Cup semi
« on: October 12, 2008, 02:16:35 pm »
... would make him the first man ever, and pretty safe to say the only man ever, to score in (and forgive the terrible quasi-American UEFA terminology and only using the post '92 Champions League format, but it has to be used to put my point across):

1st Qualifying Round
2nd Qualifying Round
3rd Qualifying Round
Matchday 1
Matchday 2
Matchday 3
Matchday 4
Matchday 5
Matchday 6
Last 16
Quarter Final
Semi Final
Final

Fucking hell.

There's always one, isn't there?

Nothing to do with this season, or next season, or any season really. Just stating something many people probably were too bored at 2am last night to think about.

He'll make a darting run from right back aged 36 in the 2017 European Cup semi final against Aldershot Town and slot it in beyond the keeper.

That's astonishing - why hasnt he scored in a semi final, we've been in enough (doesnt scoring in the penalty shoot out count?)

Wouldn't mind him scoring a 25 yard screamer against Man utd in the second leg of the semi final at Anfield and then borrowing Masch's famous celebration !

That said, it seems more like a case of when and not if.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Exactly. It's the sort of record that will only bet set by someone once a generation I'd say as you're unlikely to see a team from Qualifying Round 1 playing in a semi final, let alone scoring in a Final. If it were that easy it wouldn't have taken this long for a candidate to emerge.

Gerrard is the only player to have scored in all four major cup finals that it is possible for an England-based player to take part in (UEFA Cup, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup)

He hits the ball like Jimmy Case and he runs like Johnny Barnes
He heads the ball like Tommy Smith and he tackles like Ron Yeats
Plays at the back and in attack and bosses the midfield

Would it be more likely that Stevie is the only one who is realistically capable of setting this record in the first place because of his goals in the 1st qualifying round and the final.

No one else is in a position to set this record.
