Tea.
« on: August 2, 2008, 02:12:46 PM »
What do you make of tea? How fussy are you about it?

Generally, I'll drink anything as long as it has 1 sugar, a decent amount of milk and is hot. But some people are craily fussy about their tes...

so, some questions, to see what the general consensus is!

1. Milk? How much?
2. Sugar? How much?
3. Strong or weak?
Do you only use a particular brand, or will you just buy whatever is in the shop / on sale?
4. Which brand?
5. Technique...
a. milk first or last?
b. Leave the bag in for a while, or take it out straight away?
c. Stir and remove, or squeeze agains the side of the cup?
d. In the cup of from a teapot?

NB - for the more high pitched users, "tea" is a warm (and even sometimes cold for weirdo americans) drink, made from dried tealeaves, in teabags, stirred with a teaspoon, and often drank from a teacup.

im similar to you nidge,

boil the kettle, add a lyons tea bag (or barrys),
add between 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of sugar (generally have the 1 full in the mornings, then less)
mix it all up... take the teabag out, add some milk, not too much, but enough to not be scalding..

and drink..

as a kid i used to not be interested in tea, as i didnt like the whole process of getting it,
if i was thirsty i had water or a mineral or something, boiling a kettle etc was such a process and took up precious thirsty time just to prepare!!
but when i started work after college, i got into it, as i could take a 5min break getting it, we had an boiler always full of hot water.. so, 5 years later and im hooked..

i have lots of different teas and coffees now, but above is my fav, and rich in tradition where i grew up along the border, and in Dubland now :D

so, voil a!! !:D

Stick milk teabag and one sugar, add hot water 3/4 of the way up, stir, remove teabag and then top up with cold water  :).

Why do people need sugar?

You wouldn't put in water, or milk, so why put it in tea?

Milk is already sweet. Tea needs sugar - it's just bitter without it.

well my dad, he has to heat the cup with boiling water, make a put of tea, with many tea bags in it, (ie: if in a cafe, he needs 2 teabags per his cuppa), and then pours, mixes it all up... and has some strong tea with a little bit of milk!

My mate from Sunderland is stupidly fussy when it comes to tea, he has the tiniest dribble of milk in it, and says it's too milky if you put just a drop too much in..

Beyond me how he can tell the difference with such a tiny amount, the fussy twat. He reckons everyone from up that way has it the same.

I like Indian or English style as long as it doesn't taste like flavoured milk, has a couple of sugars in it and isn't cold.

1. Milk? How much?
Approximately 50-70ml

3. Strong or weak?
Medium

4. Which brand?
None in particular although PGTips is in the house mostly, but am trying these new range Asda loose leaf teabag bad boys, wihch are turning out pretty good. Seem to be more juicy than normal stuff

5. Technique...
Teabg in cup, boiling water on, dunk teabag quickly and deep until water is coloured. Extract teabag and squeeze joice from side of cup. Add milk, add sugar to sweeten, stir vigourously for 20 seconds, stand 30 seconds, take big slurp.

not fussy at all, as long as its proper black tea - not flavoured or earl grey stuff, uargh.

1. Milk? How much? about 1/4 - 1/5 of tea
2. Sugar? How much? none. suger is only needed for some cold, rainy days in winter
3. Strong or weak? strong. must taste of tea
Do you only use a particular brand, or will you just buy whatever is in the shop / on sale? will stick with one brand thats good flavour for money, but don't have a favourite one
5. Technique...
a. milk first or last? last, except when its quicker to put the milk in first, ie some else is still holding the teapot
b. Leave the bag in for a while, or take it out straight away? teapot: leave in for a while, often until teapot is empty. cup/mug: take out, except when teabags are rare and have to be re-used
c. Stir and remove, or squeeze agains the side of the cup? squeeze. i want every last drop of my tea.
d. In the cup of from a teapot? teapot. one cup is never enough.

only ever added honey when i've had a sore throat to be honest,

as for tea, really trying to cut down so when i'm in work i only drink green tea now(drinking that shit also puts me off raiding the chocolate in work as i would if i was drinking normal tea).
at home its tea bag in cup water in, leave it a minute, mix, take out tea bag add a small splash of milk.

tbag brand not too arsed really, like it medium strong, no sugar, tiny amount of skimmed milk(full fat milk in tea is rank)

Bit of a tea lover me, fancier brand and milk first turns it from nice to awesome.

you do know that adding boiling water directly onto milk scalds it and destroys the flavour?

Milk second is the only way - the cup has taken a bit of temperature out of the water, so the milk doesn't get  burned.

Tea with milk in before water is stinky.
