Think we can still play the 4-2-3-1 formation, with Gerrard switching to the right. It's pretty much the position he was playing a couple of years ago when he scored plenty of goals, he offers more pace and better delivery than Kuyt from that position and it still allows him a degree of freedom. Probably the only problem Gerrard had playing in behind Torres was that he often drifted back too much into the midfield area, Keane won't do that and is a more natural in that position.

Possible starting midfield/attack for the season?

.........................................................Torres.........................................................

...Babel.............................................Keane........................................Gerrard.....

...................................Alonso.............................Mascherano..............................
Pepe Reina has a better chance of scoring 10-15 goals next season than Voronin....

Someone quote me on that!!!

                               REINA

CARRA         SKRTEL          AGGER          FABIO/DOSSENA

                               MASCH

            GERRARD       ALONSO         BABEL/YOSSI

                     TORRES             KEANE

4-1-3-2 seems to work  ???

                                REINA

CARRA         SKRTEL          AGGER          FABIO/DOSSENA

                          MASCH         ALONSO

            GERRARD       KEANE         BABEL/YOSSI

                                  TORRES

4-2-3-1

both, 2 holding would suit an away game more though, at home very rarely would need 2 holding and we'd hardly create chances like we did last season.

It just like when we got Torres, this will give the club a liftand shows Rafa's intent to take the Prem by the scruff of the neck. Not only are Chelsea, Man U and Arsenal looking over there shoulders so will the rest of Europe. Oh and here's a thought Platine and Blatter wont like it Liverpool with the best keeper, one of the best Defences, the best Midfield and now the Strongest Forward Line in Europe.

Bring it on.

Welcome Robbie and take the no.7 shirt and wear it with Pride and Passion

Agree that Didi is a top class player.  Was fantastic for us, but at the time we purchased him, I can't remember fans thinking, "How the hell did we pull that deal off?".

Well, your question was "When was the last time we purchased a top player from another Premier League/old league one club?"

Dunno if it's been said, but lets not call him Keane, that's a whole different guy and a total wanker.

Delighted he's signed and think he will do well for us but I genuinely don't get why some appear to be as excited by his nationality as they are by his skill, seems very odd to me.

Me too on both counts, it is a lot of money for someone that age though, probably too much really, but if he makes the difference he will be worth it.

Because he'll pop round and tarmac your drive after training? Rafa likes his versatile players.

Elisha_Scott: Levy and Keane are really good mates, the only reason we got him was the fact that Keane pushed it so hard. It could have developed into another Gareth Barry saga if Levy hadn't been so close to the player.

the missing link, another 20 goal a season striker to compliment El Nino, the guy has been my fave striker outside those in the red shirt for a long time. His finishing reminds me of Ian Rush, simple, effective, get it in the back of the fucking net. About time we had another Irishman on the team, we just need a few more Jocks now....

He reached the semis of the champions league with Leeds United in the 2000/2001 season.
Are you sure he was involved? I thought he was cup tied due to playing in the qualifying round with Inter that season.

I think we might be seeing a formation a bit next season:

--------------------------------------------Reina---------------------------------------------

------------------------Skrtel-----------Carragher-----------------Agger-----------------

-----Degen---------------------------------------------------------------------------Dossena

----------------------------Mascherano---------------Alonso------------------------------

-------------- ------------------------------Gerrard--------------------------------------------

---------------------------Keane-------------------------Torres------------------------------

With Degen and Dossena pushing on, providing the width.  What d'ya think?

I think you've got it almost perfect. Rafa also has the option of sticking either Kuyt or Babel on the wings and doing a 352 type of thing. Good shout though lad.

Indeed. I did say 'reached', ;)  point being he has played in the champions league and in the latter stages.
Yeah, I just checked it on soccerbase and he didn't play for Leeds; he must have been cup tied that season. So he will be making his CL debut for us! Hopefully that can spur him on (no pun intended).,

Absolutely made up - he will give us another goalscoring outlet apart from Torres and Gerrard.

All this talk of qunitity of goals, I want him to be the player who makes  the differnce in tight games , for me he can score just around 6...the sort of six that would have given us one more at home to Villa and Wigan last year....maybe an early one at OT...the goals that make a difference..not numbers..will he?..

Well said. I concur 100%.

This talk of how many goals is ridiculous, if he can as you say turn draws into wins
and get us out of difficult situations which is what we lacked on so many occasions last season,
which in the end was the difference between us and the leaders, then he will have been a success.

We all have high hopes given his career to date in the premier league and his excellent form
last season but we don't know where he will be deployed on the field yet or in what formation,
I think he could potentially be a great great player for us over the next few years but too much
expectancy can be a bad thing.
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.
