Labour.  It does what it says on the tin.
It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.

Labour.  It does what it says on the tin.

Exactly.

Manual work. Fetching, carrying, lifting, that sort of thing i would imagine.

Probably a bit of sweeping, hod carrying (bricks) and being the butt of jokes as well. Tell him to watch out for gags, too, being sent to stores for a glass hammer, that kind of thing.

I was a labourer for a year or so after leaving school. It's not a bad job if you're with a decent bunch of lads. Heavy going at first like..piece of piss in the end.

Just out of interest, did he not ask what job it was that he was accepting?

Not why would he be a labourer, why would he accept a job not knowing what the job was or what he'd be doing? It's like turning up on your first day and not knowing how much you'll get paid - you sort these things out in advance, no?

It does seem odd, to accept a job, that you have no fucking idea what it is. Guess he could of choose something worse.

It's a type of dog that's good at following commands.

That would explain the "No dogs or Irish" signs they used to have in the UK. They were obviously trying to keep out both labourers and labradors.

Lifting, carrying and being told what to do.

have him wear some decent work boots, jeans, and other clothing he doesnt mind getting covered in shit

if he wants to really show off, have him get a tool belt and buy a speed square, a pencil and a tape

then they will see that he is interested in the job and keep him around

just make sure he doesnt turn up wearing trainers

its basically a fucking hard physical job

another great peice of advice

make sure he always finds something to do

if he runs out of what he is doing, have him pick up trash or sweep up or something

that way he wont get shit canned in one week

he can also expect to be sent to the stores for items such as elbow grease, a long weight, a short stand, a glass hammer, a sky hook, a left handed screwdriver, a threaded hole and a skirting board ladder.

I would advise getting them cheaply online

Do not do this. A wanker turned up on our site with a tool belt belt on, labourers dont use belts. They use spades and hogs.

If its on a site he will have to do basically everything that needs doing such as tidying up, fetching and carrying stuff. Tell him to take no shit though, some of the fellas on the sites I work on get loads of shit from arsehole tradesmen (brick layers are the worst, arseholes) just because they are labourers. Especially if hes a young lad, they will take the piss big time.

I've been a scaffolder's labourer a couple of times. Now thats fucking hard work.

basically carrying extremely heavy stuff up ladders all day. It totally fucks you up in the first week but after that its surprisingly ok...like a good workout
