held a few clubs with them but just didn't seem to feel right in my hands so would be unfair to comment as ive never swung in anger.  :D
Do you ever lose tack with the grips in the picture, do they bother your hands at all?

Never, but its horses for courses really... what might suit some may not sit right with someone else but my hands are still fairy soft  ;)

Everytime i have played wet or dry they have stayed true.

Think the fact they are multi compound helps too...

Played Letham Grange at Arbroath yesterday and Auchmikl in Aberdeen today. Majority wise Ive played quite well. But why oh why can I play shots so well, and then play identical shots so poorly. Aaaggghhh. Anyway the Aberdeen course was a real delight to play. Some really nice holes. Day off work tomorrow and playin carnoustie. Then I'm deffo gonna book some lessons as I'm gettin fed up pretending that I've sorted out my drivin when really its hit and miss.

She'd say, "Would you stop naming nuts!" And Hubert used to be able to make the sound, he couldn't talk, but he'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut. Pine nut, which is a nut, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut. Red pistachio nut. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut.

How much are you looking at paying?

Looking at paying up to £500ish. Now unsure as me mate is arsing about over it. From being keen as mustard he's now being really non comittal over dates he can get off. Its complicated that he's said hes gonna take his eldest son on holiday over summer. And his son (19) deffo wont go for a golf holiday.

I dont know why a 19 year old would wanna go on holiday with his auld feller anyway.

Gonna firm it up one way or the other with him this week. Think we'll still get away but it might be a 3 night job now which isnt that great really as I'd like 4 nights min.

I've just been through GolfBreaks so far for a quote, but they're getting on my tits now phoning me up asking me to confirm. Also mailing saying that they cant guarantee me a room or tee off times.

On the plus side I've played Letham Grange, Auchmill, and Carnoustie in the last 3 days. Knackered now like  :-)

Auchmill was a nice surprise for a course. But boggy in some places (to be expected I suppose - and theyre doing drainage work) but some really nice holes.

It was quite mild today at Carnoustie, but the wind was still a big factor. At one hole I had a 2nd into a green. The wind was blowing straight in my face, yet the flag on the green was being blown 180 degrees the opposite way. Anything you toss high into the air is in the lap of the gods really. I hit a high lob wedge at one hole. Hit it really well and looked at its on the way to the flag -straight as a die in line. Ball got to the top of its arc and I watched as it was blown totally off its trajectory to end uo 15 yards to the left of the flag. And there wasnt a breeze to be felt. Mad.

the last hole, we played off the white raised tees, and the drive back towards the clubhouse is awesome. Its a double fairway with the first, and the wind blowing from the left made you aim into the middle of the 1st fairway and just watch it come back onto the 18th. Great stuff.

I have to go to these fucking awful meetings once a year, seriously hate them. But, its now a requirement I keep 'up to date' and tick my boxes. Its a legacy of Shipman (I hate that bastard more every year).    So I got to go to a national conference like it or not.  You guys (taxpayers) pay for me to go.

Well, this year, the British Orthopaedic Association is in Manchester, mid September.  So I'm booking it up now, and to soften the pain I'm going to drive over on the Belfast/Liverpool ferry, bring the clubs, and play Birkdale. Twice. At your expense.

I've always wanted to play that course.  In my minds eye the only better course than my own (Portrush)  ...

Can't wait.

Love Birkdale, one of my favourites.  Try Hillside next door, some wonderful golf holes there as well (plus you may run into Kenny!)

Ah well, have a good time, whatever you arrange.

I've never played in Scotland - must head up there sometime. Trouble is I hit the ball quite high - might be a bit testing!

Played Pinhal today, much tricker than Millennium which was good as it required much more thought. Hired a buggy which was a new experience for me and definitely worth it when it's this hot. It's forecast 32C on Thursday when I'm booked in at Laguna, as the name suggests it's full of water hazards and I've been advised to take plenty of spare balls.

If you possibly can, try and play san Lorenzo.  Its just fantastic, way above anything else out there.

They normally only allow play for those at the Meridien hotels...but in off season (ie now) can be persuaded.

The last 5 holes are stunning.

Cheers, I'd actually booked my rounds online before I came out and I must admit I didn't see that one advertised but I'll look for it in the future.

What lofted wedges to people use?

I'm currently using a pitching wedge which I think is between 45-48 degrees. A 56 degree sand wedge and a 64 degree lob wedge.

Thinking about getting a gap wedge, looking to spend about £30. Any recommendations?

The thinking behind wedges is to have even gaps in the loft from one to the next.  A few years ago, a four wedge system was in vogue as Dave Pelz advocated and Phil Mickelson used for.  E.g. 60, 56, 52, 48.

With your current wedges, you have an even distribution, although I personally think 64 is more than you need in a LW, but saying that, it depends on how you swing it.

I play without a SW as my GW (54) and LW (60) have decent bounce angles (necessary for bunker shots)

Why were you thinking of getting a gap wedge?  What roles do your current wedges take on (e.g. do you use your SW outside bunkers, do you hit full swings or standard pitch shots with your 64, or keep it in reserve for special shots that need loft)?

bought a Nike VRS Driver a few months ago, it has an Adila RIP shaft- stiff flex, which ive been told is a really good shaft, havent been overly keen on it,

hit it at a place today which had a launch monitor, ill post the roughly what stats i was getting below:

Swing Speed- 103mph
Spin rate-        3000
launch angle-   14.7
carry-                230yds
distance            250 yds,

the guy i was talking to seemed clueless, can anyone tell me with that swing speed should i be expecting to hit the ball a bit further than that or does that look about right,

i was pretty sure i would have averaged 10-15 yds more than that to be honest,

Only played golf a few times at the local Allerton golf course (9 hole) but managed to hit a birdie on the par 3 2nd hole last week. It was a bizarre bit of luck as I was pretty ordinary on every other hole but I seem to be getting better. I'd love to know how to play the game properly but I find it incredibly boring to watch.

anybody know of any good swing training aids that are relatively cheap? my swing has a pretty steep plane, quite up and down and maybe not around so much if that makes sense, you will see a couple of posts above some stats i posted regarding swing speed which arent bad in my opinion, i do have trouble with consistency, but that could be due to not playing enough

had bought a swingyde a few months ago, practiced religiously for a week or so while using it in the living room with a wedge, went out on the course and duck hooked every shot, so i basically trained myself to duck hook, not good, got myself out of that habit pretty quickly,

so basically looking for something to train me to hit straight on a consistent basis, is there a training aid or swing aid out there that anyone would recommend??

Hi guys.
I'm really enjoying reading up on your trips abroad and your opinions on your bag fillers.
This is my first contribution to this thread.

So my situation. Now that i'm settled again (After University) I'm ready to get back into regular golf (Join local club again and get a handicap).

Now what i'm after is my "first" set of clubs. At the minute i'm using my fathers old slazengers. They're ok but i'm hopeless with the driver and long irons. Relying constantly on my 3 and 5 woods off the tee. The irons I play with ok but I think i'm ready for the first step up.

I've scrolled all over the Internet and I have a couple of  sets of irons in mind although the more i scroll the more confused i get.

Can someone give me their opinions on how to go about buying that "first" set of irons and driver. At the minute i'm looking at second hand sets of golfbidder but i dont know how to narrow them down.

Any help appreciated guys.

Cheers for the reply. Thinking of getting a gap wedge because i'm really struggling between 85-100 yards - pitching wedge and sand wedge. I hardly use my SW in a bunker, instead preferring the 64 as i can afford to take a lot of sand due to loft and usually get it out. Also use it for pitching over bunkers etc.

What's your bad shot? I ask this because when I sliced the ball really badly I got it into my head it was because of swing plane. I decided to get a lesson and the local pro said it was nothing to do with swing plane and more to do with leaning back and an open club face. Think Faldo said something similar at the weekend. Like don't change your swing unless you absolutely have to and work on the smaller faults.

Go to your local pro and get him to look at your swing. He can then recommend which clubs to get. Loft, shaft etc. You could then either buy something off him or use ebay or golf bidder where you'll be more familiar with what your looking for.

How far do you hit PW and SW with full swings?

Your wedge gaps seem ok at the moment.  Have you tried measuring your distances with small variations to your setup or swing?  As a test, try hitting a PW with your hands right at the bottom of the grip.  This will take yards off, but allow a full swing.  Do the same with SW and you have 4 distances you can rely on.  If you get big differences between normal and low grips, try choking down half way.  You then have 6.

Go to your local pro and get him to look at your swing. He can then recommend which clubs to get. Loft, shaft etc. You could then either buy something off him or use ebay or golf bidder where you'll be more familiar with what your looking for.

The only thing I'd add to that is to go down to a decent driving range and give it a bit of Bertie Bullshit about wanting to buy a new set of clubs. I've done this a couple of times and it went well.

They'll then let you try out as many sets as you want in the hope of flogging something. Then say you'll have a think about it, then go and buy them cheaper off Golfbidder instead. Or if you think the price is good see if he'll do you a deal.
And he was a right c*nt at it's-a-cup-final-knock-out at holly park in 74 the nonce-pseudo-fucking-thespian rapist-wool

forgot to post last week...

Frodsham hit a 91... (think it worked out around 33 s'ford points in our society) should have been in the mid 80's but for a few duffed chips and poor 2nd shots... have got a routine going before everyshot and for once it seems to be working... just need to hook it all up and i fancy another lower score...

when it works this game is great...

when it doesnt... well you know...

i know a lad that shagged twins, i asked him how he could tell the difference , he told me the lad had a mussy.

Playing Formby Hall tomorrow afternoon for just £30

I lived in Formby when the club first opened and it was a ridiculous price to play then

Was going along nicely yesterday, on for shooting in the low 80s when I got stuck in a bunker on 10 and literally couldn't get out!

The sand was solid and I ended up making a huge hole behind my ball. Ended up having to take a drop out of the bunker and made an 11! Managed to shoot 88 in the end.

Which makes me ask; can you take a drop out of a bunker without playing a shot in it?

How far do you hit PW and SW with full swings?

Your wedge gaps seem ok at the moment.  Have you tried measuring your distances with small variations to your setup or swing?  As a test, try hitting a PW with your hands right at the bottom of the grip.  This will take yards off, but allow a full swing.  Do the same with SW and you have 4 distances you can rely on.  If you get big differences between normal and low grips, try choking down half way.  You then have 6.
Yeah, sometimes do that, just feel that my PW isn't lofted enough to make the gap up to SW. Almost feels like a 9 iron at times.

Pretty sure you could declare it unplayable and take a drop with a penalty shot.

That's what i initially thought when i saw the lie but neither of us was sure, so I decided to play it! Would of saved me at least 5 shots!

well, must admit I'm not well clued about all the rules.... but while watching The Open recently, I was under the impression that if you choose to declare it unplayable in a hazard, you have to take a penalty but drop in the bunker.

Think that's specific to it being in standing water though mate, and would be without penalty.

But if you opt to declare your ball unplayable (eg plugged under the face, say), can't you take a penalty drop?  But must be dropped in the bunker not nearer etc?
