If you've got a job a family and friends and you can make ends meet then you've got nothing to envy them for; I would say that in some ways you would probably have riches beyond their understanding. I put myself in that category. I don't envy them at all.

If I didn't have a job and had no prospects, or couldn't make ends meet then it would be different. I know I should be burning with fury for the injustice done to others, but in the end you've just got to find your own peace of mind somehow. If all else fails there's always religion - that's what it's for after all.

I reckon there's two types of people - money people, and people people. I'd put us lot in the second group. We disagree with them but at least we can understand what motivates them. They haven't got a clue what we're all about, but as long as they're exploiting us they are happy.

PS Sadly a lot of the unemployed, the unwashed, the underclass or the generally downtrodden are actually 'money people' (cos they allowed the telly to make them that way), it's just that they haven't got any money - they're really unhappy.

You and FS need to read a book called Affluenza. That pretty much explains the problem with modern society.

ok one just for me

dedicate this one to the 96, Shanklyboy, Bill, Bob, Joe, Ronnie, Kenny, Emlyn, FS, Terry, all the Auldies, even Johnno and of course Geoff Strong

But mainly the mods for having the forgiving nature and patience to allow me to get to 10K so far.

congratulations geoff.

How many of those have been arguing for patience?  :)

The thread's locked now, but have a look at the qoute by Tom Werner...
I think the threads been locked because all hands are getting in the usual lather over a player that's been linked to us. But it looks to me as if Werner's been asked about Dempsey and he's replied, A great player, anyone would be made up to have him.

But, to me anyway, there's a very dodgy part in what Werner's said...

"We have great confidence in Kenny. He enjoys our full support," Werner told Goal.com via email. "We are confident that we will be making further progress in the future, and we are hard at work identifying transfer targets to help us continue to improve the squad."

I'd like to know, how was this interview arranged.
Did Werner ask to talk to them? Because, to me anyway, that sounds very much like the ominous and dreaded Chairman's, "We've got full confidence in our manager," malarkey just before a change is made.

If a mod pops in here, they'll probably get a cob on with me saying that. Can't say I blame them, with how it's been out there lately. But they've seen enough of them qoutes to know exactly how ominous that could be. I just can't work out why Werner's coming out with it just before the most important game his company have faced since taking over at Liverpool.

I hope I'm seeing smoke where there's no fire, and I'm not going off on one my mad conspiracy theories. But I don't like what he's said one bit, and that he's said it now. I suppose I should just take it at face value, that he's supporting Kenny before the final. But even then, it's still a rik to me. If I'm looking at it like that, imagine what the likes of Henry Winter is reading between the lines. I wish chairmen would just sign the cheques and keep schtum again.

Guilty as described mate! I have to say it was a bit of a bloody shock to see them lads legging it when the local plod arrived though. Not shocked at 'em running like but bloody hell, they were playing footy in a street of semis - and they had gardens!!
If they had those houses in that neighbourhood, there were real fields and parks nearby where they should have been honing their ball skills.
Parks are great for doing that ...or am I thinking of something altogether different? :P :P :P

In Ardwick in the early 50's all we had were 2-up and 2-down terraced cobbled streets - and the only grass we saw was growing in the dirt between the flagstones.

Best of luck for the game against the rent boys folks and enjoy the long weekend.

"We've got full confidence in our manager,"

I wonder if any of our USA RAWKites can tell us if this is the kind of language that gets used over there before the inevitable happens, or are we putting an English slant on an innocent American comment, because I must admit I got that sickly feeling in the pit of me stomach when I read those words yesterday.

That football league war cup final film was superb.

Veteran Hunt...I think he was probably only about 30 then but looked more like he was in his mid 50's.
No simulation or waving of imaginary cards or studs up tackles, though I suppose it would take some effort to lift your foot more than 12" off the ground in those divers boots. And people lighting up fags while walking to the tunnel.
And wasn't it nice to have a subdued commentary, not like the often inane babbling you get these days.
And that Bolton ManU Northern semi with Lofthouse playing back from injury, just wonderful stuff.

My Dad got fined when I was a kid, he was coming home from work at dinner time, walking through the tennements and started playing football with a few kids who lived there when out pops the local over zealous bizzie. He actually got done for it as well, the kids all done one and he was left holding the ball.

Since becoming an armchair, it's driving me mad. Don't know the fellas name, fat fella, match of the day, screaming like he was in pain or ecstasy the other week. It was some shite mid-table game, with nothing to play for, and the ball was just bouncing round like a pinball in midfield. I can't even remember who was playing. I turned it off straight away, anyway.

I just think the game is such a joke nowadays that the commentary would be better if done by someone who just totally took the piss out of it, or better still just do away with the likes of Match of the Day and have Harry Hill's Football Burp or something along those lines. You never know, those mega ego's may not be able to take the entire nation falling about laughing at their Drogba/Rooneyesque antics and actually just try and play football instead.

Fwiw from this American, it's hard to draw a definitive conclusion (though my gut feeling is certainly in line with Leo's and the Doc's).

The dreaded "vote of confidence" language does indeed get used over here (and if I'm not mistaken, I'm quite sure FSG quite publicly gave The Hodge a "VOC" at one point during his diabolical tenure?).  But it's also just as common to for management to express their displeasure by conspicuously saying nada and/or being completely unapproachable (i.e., how FSG dealt with ex-Red Sox manager Terry Francona).

What method gets used in a given circumstance I imagine depends on the stature of the person to be sacked and how much of a fuss they think the decision will make.  There's obviously a p.r. element involved if there's any whiff of controversy, so my feeling is the "VOC"s tend to get uttered as part of charm offensive.   (And for that reason, it's hard for me personally to not hear alarm bells ringing.)

Only seen them play live a couple of times but what a fantastic group.  As Studio One house band they recorded god knows how many classic ska tracks. I was planning on seeing them soon on their current tour but who knows now?

Welcome back Terry mate. Not much happened, FS has lost 6 stone and Andy has given up currys.

And we've got ourselves 3 excellent new shiny mods.

You and FS need to read a book called Affluenza. That pretty much explains the problem with modern society.
The book everybody needs to read is 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist' .

There was a fine mod, name of Pheeny
Who'd ne'er be seen dead in a beany
He'd go for long runs
To tone abs, thighs and buns
And his moustache was far, far from teeny
