Bilbo does look good, Rusty.

I also like the dwarves much more in context than against the gray backgrounds.

It's the missed opportunity of seeing another vision of this world, another artistic hand involved that irks me a bit.
Here we'll have just more of the same, already seen in Lord of the rings, every aspect of it will more-less be recycled.
I'm also somehow bored to fucking death of the way he shoots action shots, so that part of the adventure is pretty much spoiled in advance. Dunno, just made me remember that Del Toro could have done this and now, peeking into Jackson's Hobbit, it seems like something I'd rather watch.

I think Beorn will be for the second movie, this one will go till he finds the ring, at least that's my guess.

I find it fair to be similar (image related) to LOTR, it gives continuity to the story.

I'm betting they get to either being captured by Elves in Mirkwood or into Lake Town. There is kinda a narrative shift there I think.

The trailer kind of reminds me of the Lord of the Rings movie, think there were Hobbits in them as well which is probably why.

I'm not a fanatic of the books, but I did like the LOTR movies. Honestly, to a casual fan like me, this Hobbit trailer looks boring. Same characters, less action. I suppose if you're a big fan of the books you'll want to see it. But though I think Jackson's work looks nice and polished as always, I'm kinda :boring Sorry for being a drip.  :-X

It book isn't because it's aimed at kids. The plot though is, and could do with 2 films.

Especially since they are trying to tie it into LOTR via all the appendices stuff (White Council, Dol Guldor, etc). I actually think there would need to be some amazing amount of trimming to make one movie out of the Hobbit. You have the trolls, rivendell, goblin town, riddles in the dark, warg attack, beorn, spiders, and being capture by Elves in Mirkwood, all in the first half of the book. Its a ton to get through.

Well it depends how long you want the film to be. There's definitely a good bit of trimming no matter what (some of which, I think, would need to be done in any case), but if you're aiming for a two hour film vs a three/three and a half hour film you'd obviously need to cut down more. Splitting it into two films allows them to minimize that to what is strictly necessary, or by and large only what is necessary.

They could probably do it in one, I'm preferring the two, though. But let's face it, they're splitting it up simply to make a bigger profit.

I'm hoping it'll be two 2 1/2 hour movies. It would fit the material better to me. The Hobbit isn't epic (well maybe a little by the end), its fairytale.

Now that you mention it, it could be till the Warg Attack this first part. Second from Beorn on

It's been about 10 years since I read the book, so I can remember bits and pieces and forget large swaths of it, but I do remember the main parts and characters. Going by that, I didn't think the trailer did the film any favours at all. In fact, it looks like just an extended teaser with bits directly lifted out of the previous three films, or scenes that got deleted. It could and should have been better handled. Maybe there isn't enough recorded material yet, but I think a better trailer would have been just a small teaser of Smaug. Showing Gollum at the end like it was some sort of reveal is nothing new. We've seen Gollum. We know what he's like as a character and to look at. Seeing that Smaug is central to the story, it would have made better sense. Maybe we'll get a glimpse of him in the release trailer.

Unless possibly as a flash back, I doubt Smaug will feature in the first film. So that may be a factor in why they aren't pushing him too much at this stage.

I can't see the film going as far as the arrival at the Lonely Mountain.

I think it will probably end either with the Dwarves imprisoned in Mirkwood, or with the departure from Lake Town to head to the mountain.

Good point. I forgot about it being two parts. It still looks brilliant, mind.

I understand that a different vision would have been interesting, but I don't get why people insist that Del Toro would do a better job, or that he was "the only person" to direct this film. To be fair to Jackson, he did an outstanding job on the first three films, arguably beyond the expectations of what could have been done with a big screen adaptation of those books. Why risk fucking it up for the sake of a fresh vision? Jackson knows the score and knows how to deliver from the first three, and I think he's nailed the look and feel of the book judging from the trailer. Absolutely spot on as far as the way I imagined it when reading the novel.

Don't think I could stand 5 mins if it consists of fuzzy computer generated battle scenes again.

For example, when the riders of rohan charged in at dawn, the charge over the bridge at helms deep, the green ghosties that went storming into and up and around Minas Tirith...

Don't spoil such good films with that shite again Peter.

And if the Official Hobbit Trailer release wasn’t enough for Hobbit fans.  Peter Jackson dropped even more Christmas gifts for Hobbit fans, by releasing the 5th “Behind the Scenes” Hobbit Production Video.

I thought in general the CG was pretty good.
The only moment that jars for me is that bridge charge at Helm's Deep, where all the cavalry behind the first rank are swinging and hacking at empty space.

Also, bear in mind also that we're talking about 10 years ago, and LotR was the first big project Weta Digital did. I think they'll have improved somewhat.

Trailer looks ok, but it will be fucking shite because of the tinkering and changes that the two bit horror director hacks does to it.

Already glimpsed what can only be the three ogres scene turned into an action fighty shouty scene, when its a very important character development scene for Gandalf, we get to see he isnt just an old man or a wizard, he is smart clever and sly as fuck. But then I guess thats the redundancy part of having a prequel, there doesnt need to be character development for some of them, they are already fixed, so it allows directors time and space to fuck about having a wank and wrecking things.

And Howard Shore again, really? Fucking shite, get Williams, get Zimmer, get anyone but that boring fucking clues tit.

anyone think that some of the dwarfs looked a bit disneyish? one of them looked like a lot like obelix from astrix the gaul. and then the song, lets be honest its naff.

what did i want to see? good question, and all i can say is, i know what i didnt want to see.

its probably been ruined for me because i though it was gonna be directed by del toro, and i envisioned Pans Labrynth type movie for The Hobbit. which i thought was inspired. now we're never gonna see that. so no matter what happens im never gonna be happy. tough titty for me no doubt!

Pan's Labyrinth was a decent film, but what else has he done? I personally thought Hellboy was pathetic. I just feel that Peter Jackson's vision of middle earth adds another layer of realism to the world, he's created a fantasy film, but the places, the people, the buildings, the clothes, everything! It's not obscure, or weird, but that's what I love about it, it's believable.

Also, I think it needed to be similar, visually, as the Lord of the Rings. It would be too strange if the whole aesthetics for the world radically changed.

Personally I liked the dwarf song, but I guess it's all down to taste.

Well, it's been a long time since it was said that Del Toro wasn't directing it, so I still don't know what were you expecting to see if you know he's not the director.

I think it's great the Jackson can keep the continuity of his middle earth vision. Is fair enough. Not like the nonsense that ended up being harry potter with all those different directors and keeping the shittiest one till the end, when the best was Alfonso Cuaron.
