orthodontic advice needed.
« on: March 10, 2008, 07:39:23 PM »
Mu daughter has had a brace which is intended to change the shape of her jaw as it continues to grow. The thing is awful for her but is removable. Problem is she wants, understandably, to take it out a lot. I can win the battle most of the time but it's hardest when she is eating as it is really uncomfortable and she is finding it almost impossible to eat with any enjoyment whatsoever.
If she were to wear it at all times but pop it out to have her meals would that have a detrimental effect on the treatment? Or should I "force" her to wear it at meal times too?
Don't know who's more upset..me or her.
Any dentist/orthodontists out there that can give me some advice?
Cheers
YNWA.
Kemlyn.

Don't think you're supposed to wear them when you eat.

I thought you had to take them out when you eat, anyway when I had mine was very glad that I had a fixed one mkaes it impossible to take out so not as much hassle.

You're not supposed to wear them when eating as far as I'm aware, I never did anyway

Not trying to be funny mate, but have you tried phoning up the dentist that fitted it and asking them? Surely they'll know better than members of a football website?

My daughter got her functional brace fitted a couple of weeks ago and the orthodontist told us she was to wear it for 14 hours a day. Doesn't matter when during the 24 hours so she wears it when she comes back from school until the following morning when she wakes up for school. He did say she was to take it out during meals. She tends to wear it a bit longer during the weekends as he also said the more she wears it the quicker her treatment would be. My daughter didn't like wearing it at first but I just reiterated how nice her teeth would look when her treatment was finished so she's persevering with it. Good luck with it - I'm sure she'll get used to it.  :wave

Of course I have!..but a bit more complicated thatn anyone could be bothered knowing about.
Anyway, I thought I might get some other views as these things are not always cut and dried. I also thought there might be the odd dentist /orthodontist on here who's advice I could take on board as well as other's who's own kids have had similar treatments.
