Since this -

We didn't win that day but we still appreciate that he got us there in the first place, and gave us a chance.

Spot on.

reaching a final count towards a managers credits ? or maintaing a champions league position?
this is starting to really piss me off, its only being used by those trying to justify the failings of rafa,so why is it being used as an achievement, it means sweet f.a to a season ticket/auto cup scheme member only if you win,i mean walking back to a bus with a purple wristband after athens,do you think we classed getting there as a victory,no chance, and neither should anyone else use it either,

do you use paisley reaching the fa cup just days before our greatest night in rome,do you bollocks,or shanklys trip to hampden park, and theres more, but we dont use them??????

Why not it's part of our history

I may be wrong, but didn't getting to a couple of finals save Bryan Robson's job when he got Boro relegated?

Bad example  ;D

Well just a few years ago we never looked like getting this far in the competition. Its not like we were winning the European cup year in year out and after Rafa took over the best we could do is a final. He took us further than Chelsea have ever been last year, and as far as Arsenal have been too. Reaching a final as significant as the Champions League is a acheivement. It isnt winning, but for a club in our position, it cant be ignored when looking back on the progress our manager has given us.

There has been a general watering down of the majority of our fans expectations and I don't know whether this is realistic, or defeatist. Whatever it is, it is depressing.

since Rafa took over you mean? or are you talking bollocks. Houllier was right he raised expectations by winning a treble, which were further raised by Rafa winning a European Cup in his first year.

If there's been a general watering down it's only because we've expected too much too early and the rational ones amongst us are putting Rafa's performance into perspective by comparing his record so far with current and past successful management, who also didn't win everything and actually had a few barren seasons a long the way.

Docker is absolutely right you know. Benitez HAS to go as his record in cup finals is appalling.

I don't mean since Rafa took over, I mean over the years. Do you remember Bob Paisley? "mind I've been here through the bad times too, one year we finished 2nd".

Like I said, perhaps it is realistic to accept less. But that's still a bit depressing. I don't want us to be happy finishing top four, I want us to consider finishing anywhere outside the top 2 a major disappointment.

If you want to put Rafa's performance into perspective, then judge it against his own acheivements. We're going backwards in terms of the league. Now, you may well be right, and the man may well have earnt another crack at it next year. What happens between now and the end of the season will decide that.

It will always be a major disappointment, but you mention Bob Paisley like it was just yesterday. We need to earn our spurs again before we can afford to be less than pragmatic about our relative successes.

If it wasn't for the support of TV Williams Shanks would have got the sack.
It seems to me that Docker is only saying what Bill said himself.
"1st is everything 2nd is nothing "

Yes he did say it but it was his personal opinion and didn't achieve that every season

We also came very close to losing him to Sunderland in 1964.

1967 - 5th
1968 - 3rd
1969 - 2nd (last piece of the jigsaw time, next season lads, it'll be ours again)
1970 - 5th (sack him, we're going backwards!)
1971 - 5th (no progress, boooooo!)

Apart from getting beat by Arsenal in 1971, there were no cup finals during Shankly's rebuilding phase. None. Not even a shitty UEFA Cup final, which looks like it's now been replaced by the shitty European Cup as an object of derision on these shores.

To think Shankly's Red Army had won fuck all since the title in 1966 when that picture was taken in 1971. Five seasons of fuck all and we turn up in our droves to welcome home the losing FA Cup finalists, apparently even Chairman Mao hadn't seen such a show of Red strength! We won fuck all the following season as well.

... since the number finals reached by his team in a particular competition (in this case the Champions League) inside three seasons equals the total number of appearances in the final of the same competition for all other clubs from the same country in the previous twenty years.

If you mean a manager's reputation/standing when you say 'credits' that is.

Is right. What a stupid thread.

No wonder the American owners think they can ride out the resentment and hatred directed their way.

Fickle fans.  Just weeks ago, the fans were holding protests in support of Rafa.

I'm glad with the latest news of Rafa and Hicks forming that unlikely alliance.  I might not understand all of Rafa's player selections.  And I'm not sure if the rotation has done any favors when it comes to set pieces (where it would seem that familiarity and repetition with the same teammates would help).  Yes, it is certainly frustrating (even for this self admitted 'new fan').  But I'm a firm believer that Rafa has a plan for building the club towards a title.

Now go out there Liverpool and beat those skooter tossers!

And its really pissing me off now that Rafa's considerable achievements are being written off as if an afterthought.

At no time did anyone have to face the considerable financial obstacles that Chelsea, Arsenal and United have to offer. The least that can be expected is time, unless of course you want to become Newcastle in which case carry right on with this shite.

I agree fans are fickle.
However, I assure you the owners will not ride out any storm of resentment.
