Theo Walcott
« on: January 25, 2008, 12:25:05 AM »

From The Times
January 25, 2008

Rafael Benitez’s daring plan to sign Theo Walcott on loan is turned down by Arsenal

Matt Hughes, Gary Jacob and George Caulkin

Arsenal have rejected an audacious attempt by Liverpool to take Theo Walcott on loan for the rest of the season. The 18-year-old has attracted interest from several Barclays Premier League clubs, with Sven-Göran Eriksson still hopeful of luring him to Manchester City, but the fact that Rafael BenÍtez was willing to place his faith in a player of such limited experience as he attempts to rescue Liverpool’s faltering season will come as a surprise.

BenÍtez has admired Walcott for some time and was one of many managers scrambling for his signature when he left Southampton two years ago, only to balk at his £12 million fee. The Spaniard had hoped to use him on the right wing for the remainder of the season, but Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is adamant that he will not be allowed out on loan.

Here's what happened:

George: I'm running out of ideas.

Tom: Are there any other good mangers who've lost their jobs? What about that Sven Goy-ran dude at Man City?

George: Says here he really lost the fans by taking Theo Walcott to the world cup. Man, he must be shit!

Tom: I'll leak it to the press.

Not very good at all. Glad, if this is true, that we missed out.

Had the misfortune of having Talkshite on again today, thanks to my beloved step-brother (... it's not that bad. Once you get past the presenters and the topics. Atleast it's football related. Ish.) Ginger Duhram was on one of his usual "I'll be as controversial as possible to stir-up some interest rants... "WENGERS RUINED WALCOTT. HE WAS A GREAT PLAYER AT SOUTHAMPTON!", sadly, most of the gimps ringing up seemed to believe this.

He was never great at southampton. He scored a handful of goals purely down to pace. He doesn't have a spectacular U21 record (not compared to Krisztian Nemeth anyways ;)), and his one goal against Germany U21s has caused a shitload of hype over nothing.

He's quite fast, but not very good. At present he makes Aaron Lennon look like Garrincha doing a John Barnes impression.

Bullshit story. I'd like to think Rafa would give Babel more playing time out there than sign Walcott on loan. Especially with Benayoun and Pennant on the books, and Gerrard able to play there. It's hardly an area we are short in.

Walcott is not a winger ... He is a right-sided forward ... And just turning 19 in March ... I know many people are still pissed with him because he snubbed us two years ago ... And yes, he is not having a great time at Arsenal, but please tell me you rate Voronin ahead of him ... Because, that is the player he would have replaced on our team ...

I think this ties into Rafa's vision for the future, I'd believe theres some truth to it. The kds obviously talented, needs the right coach and environment to shine IMO.

Arsenal fans say when he plays they play with 10 men that says enough IMO. Wouldn't touch the limited speed merchant with 80 foot barge pole even players that where meant to have less potential like Scott Sinclair have surpassed him.

Would rather get Paul Anderson back.

two goals.

I wouldn't trust Arsenal fans, right now if they haven't made it by 18 then they are clearly rubbish and should be sold immediately is pretty much what a fair few are saying. Walcott is a good young player, he has done well for England, has been one of the U21's better players when he is on the pitch but for Arsenal...

We are quick to forget when he performs well, at the start of last season he was fantastic but then he picked up an injury which clearly affected his performances. This season has been filled with niggles and he has only been able to perform in flashes, he seems to have a minor shoulder problem and of course he isn't feeling too confident at the moment. Wouldn't have been a bad addition if Rafa could get him fit and mentally confident

Let Walcott cost Arsenal a couple of games while he gains first team experience. Why would we want to build up a player and hand him back to one of our major rivals????

Agree with the post below, Babel is a much better player!

Our own strikers are struggleing for form let alone bringing in one that is struggling to get in the team of one of our biggest rivals.

If we need to be bringing in a loan striker, we should be looking elsewhere.

3.05pm: The rumours are flying in. Theo Walcott and Pablo Aimar have been spotted at Anfield, Gago and Shola Ameobi at the City of Manchester Stadium, and Shaun Wright-Phillips at St James' Park.

Bringing Theo Walcott on loan would signal the end of Liverpool as one of the "Big Four." Only smaller clubs would take such a player on loan for the rest of the season, clubs who are not in Arsenal's way.
