Will we sign any more players this January?
« on: January 18, 2008, 03:09:16 PM »
Let's see what everyone thinks. With the current mess with the owners, it looks unlikely but then, many people will have been surprised that we even signed Skrtel for 6.5m.

Unfortunately I don't think we'll even sign Mascherano, rather the owners will tell Rafa he has to leave it to the summer.

I doubt it, although one of the best PR moves the Yanks could make is to sign Mascherano, so I wouldn't rule it out entirely if things with regards to takeovers/protests etc get worse before they get better (as far as the yanks are concerned).

No, I don't think so.

Be happy to be proven wrong tho. Especially on Mascherano.

Just read that a few times to get over your disbelief. Sold the club a year ago to allow us to make simple signings like this and instead we've been shafted by a pair of skint cut throats. Top 4 club my arse.

Yeah I'm getting bitter by the hour.

I doubt it unless we can finalize deals for Sissoko and Carson to go, then obviously Masch would be signed. Seems pretty unlikely to me though. Especially with the ownership situation as it is right now.

Considering the events of the last few weeks, from a possible target's point of view, how attractive would Liverpool look with the sorry mess those two have created. There is now alot of instability and if funds WERE available to delve into the market, would players want to come here not knowing if Rafa will still be here next season? Or the talk of another ownership change. I think the summer would be the best time to make moves.

That's a good point. I wonder if Masch would even sign without knowing whether or not Benitez will be here.

is 100% right, unfortunately.

however, if rafa is staying and even if funds are tight, i wouldn't be surprised to see another arbeloa/paletta/leto-type purchase...

Maybe one or two youth/reserve team players but apart from that no

Frustratingly looks like the Mascherano deal will be stalled at the very least till the summer and maybe permanently if we dont see a change in ownership  :butt

Please not another Paletta! I get what you mean though and agree with you. I am Mascheranos biggest fan but I do kind of see the pragmatic nature of waiting until the end of the season to sign him. He is on a loan which we have to pay anyway plus we have first option to sign him. It wouldnt be prudent to sign him now as there is no advantage to do so. He could fall under a bus between now and the end of the season so better to just wait and keep whatever risk there is with his current owner. I think it would be wise for the club to tell him that they have every intention of signing him so he doesnt become unsettled though.

Voted yes.
Because i absolutely believe it and am not at all indulging in wishful thinking.  Honest.
To be fair, as much as i doubt the owners will sanction any big or even medium moves, there is still a good chance of someone arriving even if as others suggest its just more kids.  Hell i was surprised they gave funds for Skrtel, maybe they will surprise us again.

Blues to confirm Zarate

Birmingham to land striker

By Graeme Bailey   Last updated: 18th January 2008

Birmingham will unveil the signing of Mauro Zarate this weekend, skysports.com understands.

The Blues were forced to wait for the Argentine striker as he played his last game for his Qatarian club Al-Sadd.

And Zarate signed off in style as he scored and set-up two in a 4-0 win over rivals Al-Gharrafa.

Skysports.com can also reveal that both Liverpool and Newcastle failed in last-ditch approaches for Zarate - as Birmingham already had an agreement in place.

Zarate will sign on-loan for the rest of the season at which point he is expected to seal a permanent deal.

The 20 year-year-old flys into England early on Sunday and will be at St Andrews for Birmingham's clash with Chelsea.

Voronin crouch kuyt take your pick. Maybe we just were looking for someone who can put it in the back of the net at better than 1 in 4 games. Might be a tad harsh on Crouch as he has hardly had much of a run. I hate the way we play when he is in the side though HHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFF

I agree.  When Crouch is around we should play it on the ground to win free-kicks etc and then we can hoof it!

I can't help worrying that even if we did find the right man at the right price would he actually want to come here with all the uncertainty surrounding the club's finances and the manager's long term future hanging in the balance at the moment.
'No club in Europe has an anthem like You'll Never Walk Alone. No club in the world is so united with the fans. I sat there watching the Liverpool fans and they sent shivers down my spine. A mass of 40,000 fans became one force behind their team. That's something not many teams have. For that I admire Liverpool more than anything'. (Johan Cruyff)

That is an overplayed concept about how Crouch's inclusion dictates the way we play. He is quite solid on the ground tecnically and a decent amount of our play is along the floor where he is no monkey in helping to keep the momentum going with one touch passing and good distribution. Can keep the ball as well when needed to allow midfield support to drive up. I'm not saying there is no long ball element to our play when he is included in the starting line up I just think that is overplayed.
