2008: The year in music
« on: December 13, 2007, 07:04:11 PM »
So, who'll be lighting your candle and squeezing your lemon next year? We had some little beauties in 07, but it's time to look ahead and prepare for another scary ride into the unknown...
I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool.
I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager.
Thank you so much once more and always remember: You'll never walk alone.

Looking forward to hearing more from Duffy. Rockferry is a great single, and she has that whole Dusty in Memphis/Evie Sands thing going on. She could be huge, but I thought that about Candie Payne and it didn't seem to happen for her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlcRRnbqS8Y

Kathleen Edwards has an album out in March. If it's half as good as her first two that'll make me a happy man.

And I'll be very surprised if Gary Louris' solo album isn't among my top ten this time next year. Particularly after hearing this http://juju79.free.fr/01%20True%20Blue.mp3

Pitchfork reckon April 2008 for the new Portishead album.

James, Weezer, The Mars Volta, Tapes N' Tapes, Jack Johnson all slated for the first few months. Should be a good'un.

Little Man Tate could finally make their break next year.  They've split up with their record label, who were doing them no favours watsoever.  I've heard afew songs from their next album and it really is exciting.  If they get hooked up with a good record label, big things could come from them.

I live in the hope that everyone will catch on to how brilliant Shearwater are in 2008 :) they've a new one due this year ... and Dan Bejar has 2 albums coming out ... one as Destroyer ... the other as a member of Hello Blue Roses ... looking forward to both of them

also looking to forthcoming releases from Cat Power ("Covers II" ) , Magnetic Fields, Gillian Welch, Tortoise, Stereolab and oft rumoured releases from Massive Attack, Portishead and Spiritualised   .. .that'll do nicely for starters

I tipped Slow Club early in 2007. They are living up to their name but I'm sticking with them despite their laziness.  They have at least got round to releasing a record.

I'll also tip Ra Ra Riot who were superb when supporting Editors.

We must be due a Sufjan Stevens offering surely. C'mon lad, 48 states to go and so little time.

Ra Ra Riot, or R³ for those of you who know your number pad codes, have just finished in the studio.

Couple of live clips on there, with a new song. Some details about the album in the blogs section. Nice to see the divine Alexandra having a go of Geometry Wars. Love the percussion photo of what they used for Suspended in Gaffa.

We can only hope this album comes out sooner rather than later.

New Raconteurs album.

Radiohead concert at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.

But many more.

I saw them when they supported the Flaming Lips around 2004 in the tiny Manchester Academy.

Easily the best live show I will ever see, both bands with their live "performances" (if you don't know what I'm on about check out Flaming Lips live on YouTube) and the great music on show all in this tiny venue, brilliant.

the best thing I've heard from 2008

I now have an image of Vic strapped into some strange Heath Robinson style contraption. He pulls the large lever and amidst much arc-ing and shuddering the room is awash with white noise. Hunched over his control panel Vic twiddles with an array of dials and slowly the noise gives way to a fresh broadcast from the future. "At last, the new Breeders album!" he shouts, before slumping back exhausted into his seat.
