something like the write knows that the spelling is not the one that is widely accepted, so the sic indicates he knows his spelling more than the banner-makers, even though ui thought focussing was with 2 s's

It means 'sicut' as far as I can remember. It's often used when something is spelt wrongly intentionally (when used by the original author) or when something is repeated word for word including dodgy spellings but correct to have used the misspelling; not an error.
