Any suggestions?
If I had that to spend on a watch it would be the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean  ,absolutely iconic.

Any criteria ?

You can pick up a Rolex 16613 but you will be talkin 20 years old for 5k.

New you could pick up an explorer 1 or 2.

I'd go for the Omega moon, you can source that new for 2800 with the new box and kit ( NATO strap and Velcro included ).

The moon watch is probably the best value watch you will ever buy all thing considered - price, history, looks.

I have some Christopher Ward watches, nothing like as much as the price you are looking at but these are very nice, and there is a 60 day return policy if you change your mind.

Can you stretch to this
http://www.watches.co.uk/iwc-topgun-chronograph-miramar/IW-18216?search_string=Iwc

Fabulous watch

Nice watch. Top end budget is 7k but 3-5k is really what I am looking to spend.

This is tempting though.

+1 for an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, but I wouldn't get a new one. You could get one dating back to the era of the moon missions (REAL heritage!) that costs less money. It''a a no brainer! Given the weakness of the pound, this really would be a stupid time to buy a brand new imported watch.

If you were set on a new watch, the current one I have my eye on is under your budget - Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope.  Beautiful watch.

Not an expensive watch person but am quite picky.

Got an old Mappin & Webb that was my grandfather's but fear the maintenance costs may be too high. Watch is nice but not worth a lot and might be happier just keeping it safe somewhere.

Thinking of getting one of these - http://www.mvmtwatches.com/collections/all-mens-watches/products/chrono-gun-metal-sandstone-leather

If your thinking of a watch try iconicwatches.co.uk in blackburn or montredo.com based in germany for decent deals - although montredo prices have gone up a bit recently cos of the euro. I saved about 30% in April

Virtually identical fordy, newer version have a better bracelet though and an updated movement.

The older moon watches also have a yellowing of the numbers and markers which some people like.

It's utterly iconic, still supplied to NASA astronauts.

Met a guy on holiday that dealt in watches. Said this one and the hublot were his favorite brand.
This is deco my favorite watch out there. I own a Breitling Navitimer, but that watch is fucking ace. May be more about, but that watch is one of the best on the market

Also, it has its own in house movement which is what you want

Can't resist... ;). http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/society/mans-luxury-watch-successfully-impresses-fellow-twats-20161024115895

Man’s luxury watch successfully impresses fellow twats
24-10-16

A MAN’S ludicrously expensive wristwatch has gained him the respect of other total bellends, he has revealed.

Sales manager Martin Bishop’s Ł1,400 Diplomat Edition Weisser Aqua-Tech 9 has made him more popular with tedious, materialistic men who also enjoy golf.

Bishop said: “It’s beautifully crafted in chunky, masculine steel with little dials that are hard to see without a magnifying glass but which do important things like telling you the month.

“A guy in the office saw it and straightaway he was telling me about his new BMW and how much his house is worth. I expect it’ll be my turn to talk about myself next time we get chatting.

“Just last week the managing director of Oswestry Guttering Supplies Ltd said ‘nice watch’ and talked to me for ages about immigration.

“It’s like joining a club where everyone respects you and you can say whatever you like, so long as it’s not about books.”

But seriously, if I could ever justify that sort of money you're talking about on a single watch, I think I would go for something elegant and timeless rather than those in my view, pretty gross Hublot monstrosities that seem to be the current favourites.

A nice manual wind Cartier in 18k....at Ł2995 (perhaps a tad too much for what it is but...)

Or this 1945 Brietling gem in 18k rose gold at Ł3267...

I don't do polite so fuck yoursalf with your stupid accusations...

Right you fuckwit I will show you why you are talking out of your fat arse...

Impeccably good taste my man.

Can't really go very wrong with a classic chrono from that era.

Did you inherit or buy it?

While I personally could never justify buying one at that price myself, I understand why people do.

I'm more at ease and happy with much cheaper variants on the theme but of the same era.

Currently wearing this in 18k Rose Gold...

Fantastic. With a family history like that, it's priceless so treasure it and pass it on if you can.

One of my watches that I sometimes wear is an old Art Deco Ancora from the late 30's. See attached.

Unlike your watch, it's not particularly valuable in a financial sense, it's a cheap movement and the case is just plated gold, but the history is what makes it invaluable to me.

My Dad bought it in New York back in '42 to bring back as a present for my Grandad. Needless to say, my son will get it someday.

My old man was late for everything. So its pleasing to know that I too can attribute blame to our old watch as I am apparently late for everything too. :)

Alas I have no son to pass it onto, however I do have a young nephew who is a chip of the old block. He too is late for everything. Plus he's a red and a rascal. Likes bikes and nearly got expelled from school for beating up a bully. Good lad.

Went to try the Omega Speedmaster Professional on today.

The salesperson at Omega was rubbish.

He was basically saying it's not a watch you wear everyday and that the new speedmaster  has tried to go back to the original and you have to wind the watch every day.

I'm still interested but the salesperson was too moody and no way I was giving him 3.5k or whatever the watch cost.

Make sure you get a discount. We got 25% off 2 breitlings. If they offer interest free credit, then that usually costs the dealer between 10-20% depending on the length. Whatever it is get that discount for cash. Always haggle. Money is better in your pocket

Winding a watch once a day, or more likely every other day, is not a chore. I was given a Panerai 111 with my 116610 submariner by my uncle who was up to no good and it genuinely is no bother at all. I find myself winding it when I barely realise.

Read this about Tag:

The leading sports watchmaker has been given a serious shake-up with the arrival in 2015 of watch industry veteran Jean-Claude Biver. The brains behind the revival of Blancpain and the stellar rise of Hublot is keen to re-assert TAG Heuer's position as a watch brand appealing to a younger generation of style warriors, and has appointed Cara Delevingne and David Guetta brand ambassadors, alongside.

I quite enjoy winding my watch up. Oddly.

I dont like the castings of the case on TAG. Actually on many watches. They always appear to be poorly forged with bad definition.

Eh ? The sales person hasn't got a clue, did you actually speak to the person that does the Omega desk ?

The speedmaster professional has always been a manual wind. Its only the last 2 yers that they brought out an auto. ( DONT BUY THE AUTO ).

The heritage is with the manual wind ! It has a 48 hour power reserve off winding it up. I like to wind mine everyday though, I do it first thing when I sit at my desk.

Not an everyday watch is an absolutely bizzare shout too, I don't even know why or how he has said that ? - The watch was good enough to land on the moon, ive worn mine everyday for a year and its still perfect.

Swap to the NATO strap if you want it more casual, I swap it to a leather if im wearing a dinner suit.

The speedmaster moon is the best watch you can buy in that price range.

Get it !

I am still considering an omega de ville, a vintage one. Just for special occasions.

I had a 1965 omega De Ville for my 50th...love it, so same age as me but in better shape ;)
