We need to spend big on full-backs. If I had a pound for everytime I read/heard "£15m for a full-back?" when we were hunting Alves, but fuck me, he would have easily been worth that. I'm sure of it.

I'm gonna stick my neck out here and I'm sure people are going to call me bonkers for what I'm about to say, but I don't think Arsenal would have been in the title race for as long as they were without Sagna and Clichy. That's how important full-backs have become in the modern game, for me. For starters, full-backs make ok wingers good and good wingers great. People will point to how United are on the brink of a potential double with a makeshift right-back, but when you have Cristiano Ronaldo in front of you, the only role you have is to cover the gaps he leaves, rather than exploit the ones he creates.

For us, it's necessary to get quality full-backs in. Riise must go ASAP and we mustn't be afraid to throw serious money (if we have it) into this area.
Agree entirely.

However we may try to convince ourselves otherwise but we missed the ship by not getting Alves.  Benitez decided to spend the budget on Pennant and Bellamy but £12m would have been better spent on Alves.  Oh well, it's easier with hindsight.

I would love for us still to pick him up, even if it is for the £15m you have quoted.  As you have said, full backs are very important in the modern game.  It is funny how you have used Arsenal as an example because they are the side who I feel revolutionised the full back's role.  The amount of times the likes of Lauren, Cole, Clichy etc. have been on the end of final passes in moves is unbelievable, normally setting up the player who is supposed to be the 'winger'.

Our full backs get into decent positions but it is what they do once in those positions that is the difference.  Bar Aurelio we do not really have full backs who can deliever on an attacking basis.  Unfortunately, Aurelio is made of glass.

I agree. I am a big fan of attacking full backs, and in the modern game you just need them. Specifically us, with out 4-2-3-1, attacking full backs are a must. I won't complain one bit if we bought Alves for 20M in the summer. I think he's worth every bit of that.
Nor me. Even if we could have got him for less than half of that two years ago. I've heard all the Barca stories but until he signs it's up for grabs. Look at Modric.

Agree also. At the very top end of the sport, the difference between the best teams comes down to how good the full backs are. In comparison with the other top 4, our current full back situation doesn't bode well. I think Evra is the best full back out of the lot, just a shame Ged didn't sign him when we were linked a few years back.

Dan Alves would have been an unbelievable signing for us and given us real potency in attack down the left.

why would you wanna play Alves down the left ? When he is clearly a masterclass playing right?

Things have changed mate.  Full Backs are now very useful attacking options.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Sorry I meant the right. I've only seen him play right side and I think this year his defending has got a bit better too.

I'll be gutted if Chelsea go and sign him.

He's hardly rubbish in defense. He's better than the likes of Rafinha, and as good as Bosingwa, names that are mentioned so often here. Thing is, he is one of Sevilla's best attacking players, and when he's a right back, you need to provide cover for him. And that's when he bombs forward. He's solid when he's actually defending and staying back.

Our team is all set up for attacking full backs. There's a reason we bought Mascherano, and accommodating attacking full backs is one of the reasons.
It wouldn't be Liverpool if we didn't do it the hard way... ask Gareth Southgate.

I have been his admirer but his time is over if we realise we can't carry excessive baggage. He's underperformed for the whole season.
Our left back position needs just as much strenghtening as right winger's.

um, just a small point but...i've been watching football for 40 years and full backs have always been an attacking option. we've had many of the best right here at anfield.

He made THREE mistakes in two games in the CL and each one cost us a goal. And that after playing really badly for the previous year. He has a cheek to want another contract to be honest.

He made a mistake in the CL, but what player hasn't.

Harsh but fair.
He's a useful back-up but not a first choice. For someone who is paid so well and is a professional footballer he should be able to kick with both feet.
